The severe election losses have forced the BJP leaders to launch strong attacks on the Congress party in a controversial way. Some BJP leaders have begun personal comments on the Sonia Gandhi family triggering widespread criticism. The same happened when BJP leader Kailash Vijaya Vargeeya commented that the son of a foreign-born woman can never have true patriotic feelings towards the country.
These comments were obviously aimed at targeting Rahul Gandhi who is emerging as a big challenge to PM Modi’s bid for a second term in 2019 election. There’s a reason for Vargeeya making objectionable criticism against Rahul. It was Vargeeya who took the lead in the campaign in Madhya Pradesh election where the BJP eventually suffered a defeat. By comparison, Rahul’s campaign was termed a big success there following his party victory.
With Vargeeya’s latest attack, it became clear the BJP is going to take election campaign to a new low by bringing up the foreign roots issue against Rahul. The BJP has in the past criticised Sonia Gandhi on her foreign origin. Vargeeya is known for his bitter comments earlier when he said women who cross their limits will have to pay a price by becoming victims of atrocities.
