Changing governance of TDP in NDA

The country is observing Good Governance Day today to mark the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Ministers and Members of Parliament will tour across the country and grace the programmes emphasising the government’s key initiatives, as a part of the 100day Good Governance campaign.

The Governance realities of Modi and Vajpayee government are poles apart. RSS which has been strength for Vajpayee turned out to be a weakness of the Prime Minister who functions outside the party creating his own parallel structure of individuals, unlike Vajpayee who operated through BJP.

The BJP and TDP are allies since 1996, except for a decade from 2004 to 2014. During the NDA led government by Vajpayee, TDP was front-runner because it had the numbers. Vajpayee had to go back on the “one vote, two states” statement as TDP vouched to withdraw support. This week Andhra Pradesh witnessed the twitter rant of Pawan Kalyan and muddled stand of the Chief Minister ChandraBabu Naidu on demonetization.

Modi does not need TDP for endurance, evident from the number of AP ministers in Modi-led government. The change is that Naidu needs Modi for subsistence considering the financial crisis in the state. The Andhra CM is the head of a 13-member central committee set up to look into demonetization issue. Even after50days post demonetization, with new orders coming in day in and out, the citizen woes never seem to end, which led Naidu to make a statement against the note ban early this week. This did put the NDA on weaker grounds especially against the PM who is plunging for maximum shift to less cash economy.

The Naidu government is in dire need of central assistance which was evident from the deportment on demonetization later this week. The thwarting is a result of the cash crunch and the not so special assistance. The AP government with the notion that something is better than nothing and is making maximum out of the aid being provided by the Modi led government. Several attempts were made by Pawan Kalyan to embarrass BJP. The TDP doesn’t not have key officials in different ministries unlike with the Vajpayee government, making Naidu weaker in exerting pressure on center. The leaders are trying to let the frustration out without tagging Modi, as he is more authoritarian compared to Vajpayee who was more democratic.
