Actor-turned-politician Jaya Prada today supported the proposed triple talaq bill, saying it will bring justice and respect to Muslim women.
Jaya Prada joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1994 at the invitation of its founder N. T. Rama Rao. When Chandra Babu formed government after taking it over from NTR, Jaya Prada too joined the Chandrababu Naidu’s group of the party. She was nominated to the Rajya Sabha representing Andhra Pradesh in 1996. She also held the post of Telugu Mahila President. Later, she joined SP in Uttarpradesh and she was a Member of Parliament from Rampur from 2004 to 2014.
Recently , she supported Triple Talaq Bill introduced by BJP government in Parliament and said she respected the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, but if Parliament passes the bill, the Board should respect the decision of the topmost law-making body. she also added, the bill will bring benefits for women and they will get justice and respect. She also said most Muslim women voted for the BJP in the Uttar Pradesh elections, which showed that they were not happy with the stand of the previous governments on the triple talaq issue.
By seeing her open support to BJP, some analysts predicting that she is planning to join BJP party. Even though she started her political career in AP, now she doesn’t have any stakes here. Sometime back she told to reporters that she wants to contest from Rajahmundry. There were rumors that she tried to join YSRCP but she didn’t get positive response from that party. Seems she is not considering TDP at this moment. We have to wait and see if she can revive her political career and which party she joins!!
