Kabali: A warning to VV Vinayak

The collection registers are ringing. And all the records ever made in the nation are being broken. While the high collections is a great thing, there’s something unsettling about Kabali. The release broke a lot of hopes. Most reviews have been negative and the backlash immense. The extreme hype just made things worse. And amidst all this, there’s one man who’s being blamed – director Pa Ranjith.

The biggest error he did was that he chose to mix two styles, which backfired big time. Neither did he do justice to the image of Rajini and satisfy his fans nor did he narrate an interesting tale. It was quite an embarrassing moment in the film.

Well, closer home, there’s a similar scenario that is set to happen during Sankranthi 2017. Chiranjeevi’s prestigious movie with director VV Vinayak. While the director has proven his mettle as a commercial director for a really long time now, his last failure (Akhil) notwithstanding, this film is going to be a huge test to his abilities.

For a celebrated star like Chiru, the need of the moment is to establish his standing, to prove that he’s back and here to stay. Since it is a huge star’s film, it is possible that there’s going to be ample hype and living up to it will prove to be a huge challenge. And if they fail, the embarrassment is going to be mighty considering that unlike Kabali, this is an already proven script (it’s the remake of Tamil film Kaththi) and this film is the chance for Chiru to gain back the lost glory.

Vinayak needs to learn from the result of Kabali that for a star’s film, satisfying the audience’s urge to whistle and shout in the theatres is the main criteria for success. In case of Kathilantodu (tentative title), it is a great story. However, it’s got its weak points like the love story and comedy which aren’t great. Its high points would be the conflict and the drama. He needs to strike a balance by retaining the drama, and enhancing it, and altering the low points and make them stronger.

We are at a stage where commercial films seem to be slowly losing their sheen in Tollywood. Since Chiru’s comeback is definitely targeted at the masses, will Vinayak take a leaf out of the result of Kabali? Only time will tell!
