Sacred Games 2: A direct satire on RGV’s mafia connection

One of the most awaited web series to hit Indian markets from Netflix is the season 2 of Sacred Games. Now that it is out already, binge-watchers already spent eight hours out there to catch up the eight episodes. Most of them are taken by a surprise when they saw a clear reference of director Ram Gopal Varma in this series.

When mafia don Ganesh Gaitonde, portrayed by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, wants to make a film on his life, his team approaches none other than director ‘Ram G Varma’. That directly implies the filmmaker taking money from mafia to make films on them. And the person who portrayed the role makes a mockery of Varma as he mimicks the director’s body language and his extensive language. Even though the scenes date back to early 2000s, the director is seen peeping into his old model Nokia phone all the time.

Based on Vikram Chandra’s 2006 novel of the same name, the series is adapted to web series and directed by Anurag Kashyap, one of the prime aides of Ram Gopal Varma earlier. That makes this satirical portrayal an intentional one.

While the episodes related to Ganesh Gaitonde are directed by Anurag, the current day’s scenes featuring Saif Ali Khan as Sartaj Singh are handled by director Neeraj Ghaywan of Masaan fame.
