Allu Arjun thanks fans for making ‘Ala…’ a ‘magnanimous hit’

0

Telugu star Allu Arjun is thrilled about his latest film “Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo” opening to great numbers. He has thanked the audience for making it a “magnanimous hit”.

“I whole heartedly thank my audience for blessing us with this magnanimous Hit… and bringing smiles into our lives. So content in our hearts to celebrate the success with you all. Humbled #AVPL celebrations,” Arjun tweeted on Monday.

With Rs 119 crore (net) at the box office within one week, the film, which hit the screens on the festive occasion of Sankranti on January 12, has now become the second highest grosser in the Nizam/Andhra area after “Baahubali – The Conclusion”, said industry sources.

Arjun also tweeted a photo of his film’s team, including the director Trivikram. He captioned it: “The smiles that come during a Genuine success is soo beautiful. The joy comes from deep inside. We get that joy only when people truly heartfully bless us. Thank you all for your blessings.”

A spokesperson from the film’s production house, Geetha Arts, said: “Every film we work on, we have faith in it. With ‘Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo’, our conviction was hugely rewarded. The numbers that we are seeing are great; they mean that so many people have taken time out from their lives and trusted us to entertain them.”

“The positive response for the film, the unique story, the music and of course, Allu Arjun, has not stopped since we released just over a week back. The love of the audience has helped us reach this level of success and we are sure that it will help us achieve new milestones too,” the spokesperson added.

The movie also features Bollywood actress Tabu, who made her return to Telugu films after over a decade.

US box office : Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo joins the elite $ 3M club

Stylish star Allu Arjun’s latest blockbuster Ala Vaikunthapurramlo is refusing to slow day at the US box office even after completion of second weekend. The film has now breached the elite $ 3M club by the end of Monday to emerge as the fifth highest grossing Telugu film of all time in North America. Trade circles reckon that the film is likely to end as top three earner of all time in overseas after Baahubali series. Only Rangasthalam and Bharat Ane Nenu are ahead of Ala Vaikunthapurramlo.

US box office : Ala.. extends its strong run, SLN slows down

Tollywood biggies Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo and Sarileru Neekevvaru have managed to tide over the dull phase at overseas box office as they took sensational openings last week. By the end of first week, they have collected a combined gross of over $ 4M in North America.

In the second weekend, Ala Vaikunthapurramulo is continuing to dominate the box office by extending it’s strong run. After collecting $ 212K on Friday, the Trivikram directional had another terrific day with close to $ 280K on its second Saturday. The film is all set to enter $ 2.5M club and emerge as Trivikram’s career biggest hit by surpassing A..Aa. Aggressive pre release promotions due to blockbuster audio and promising trailers have given a very good start for Ala Vaikunthapurramlo in overseas. The positive word of mouth and superb reviews have further helped the film to have a dream run. Trade analysts are predicting that the film will enter $ 3M club in its full run. Apart from Baahubali series, only Bharat Ane Nenu and Rangasthalam have grossed more than $ 3M in overseas.

Meanwhile, Mahesh Babu’s Sarileru Neekevvaru has considerably slowed down in the second week after a good first week. On its second Friday, the commercial entertainer collected $ 67K. There is hardly any sign of improvement on second Saturday as it collected close to $ 70K. The film will cross the $ 2M on Sunday and might end up within $ 2.5M in its full run. It may fall short of breakeven status. After Srimanthudu, Mahesh Babu’s next films failed to enter the profit zone in overseas. His previous films Bharat Ane Nenu and Maharshi have ended up with minor losses in overseas. Even though Sarileru Neekevvaru managed to mint strong revenues at domestic box office, the film has surely underperformed in overseas.

The Curious Case Of Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo

Dr. Shrawan Kumar Aerrola

The primary purpose of any artistic medium is to engage the audience, emphasis on the word “engage” & that holds true to the medium of cinema also but unfortunately most of the film makers have substituted “engage” with “entertain”(read : comedy) . Most of these film makers believe that we the Telugu audience are too dumb to focus on the film at hand & assume that we have the attention span of a gold fish, so that’s why they resort to all sorts of tomfoolery to entertain us so that we don’t wander off into the recesses of our imagination & lose our interest in the film. Such ploys are as old as cinema itself . Now, if such shenanigans assimilate into the overarching narrative without changing the tone of the film outright, it will be a much welcome digression, case in point, the recently released brilliant caper “Matthu Vadalara”, but most films fail horribly & irritatingly so & the pioneer of this revamped age old technique is Mr.Trivikram Srinivas who used this sporadically & effectively in his earlier films but it reached a dizzying & nauseating heights in Attharintiki Daaredi & died a whimpering death in “Agnaathavaasi”. We, the audience lapped up his proverbial biscuit like an eager to please Labradoodle, so like any smart man, Mr.Srinivas played to the gallery & continued to pander to us but with diminishing returns as evidenced by the debacle that was “Agnaathavaasi”. To Mr.Srinivas’s credit he did genuinely try to raise the standards of his audience by making “Khaleja” but we rejected it so badly that Mr.Srinivas had to recalibrate his intellectual compass after realizing that we’re not worthy of his intellectual prowess, so he went back to pandering to our plebeian & simple brains but with the result of Agnathavasi, Mr.Srinivas realized that the jig was up & went back to his strengths & made a honest film like “Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava” & with that film proving to be a hit, he realized that the audiences have evolved . Amidst this revamped confidence in his audience comes the sophomore film from Trivikram 2.o, “Ala Vaikunthapurramlo” starring Allu Arjun, Pooja Hegde, Murali Sharma, Tabu & a bevy of other respected artists. So let’s dive into the narrative structure of “Ala Vaikunthapurramlo”

SPOILER ALERT!! SPOILER ALERT!!

For the sake of this argument let’s divide the movie into Four acts & let’s analyze it act by act.

ACT-1 – There’s a saying in screenwriting courses , it goes “when you want people to like your protagonist, make him save the cat” . It doesn’t literally mean to save a cat, it means a writer should make the protagonist do something so that the audience will like him because only when we like the protagonist we will follow him through the perilous journey that he’s about to undertake. when it comes to this film Mr.Srinivas comes out at us with his bat swinging with in the first five minutes when a jealous underachiever Valmiki (played gleefully by Mr.Murali Sharma) decides to swap his son with that of his erstwhile companion & now his boss Ramachandra’s son , who grows up to be Mr.Allu Arjun (who just owns every scene that he’s in with his understated charm & sincerity) & names him “Bantu (servant)” as a screw you to his erstwhile companion . Valmiki never misses a chance to berate Bantu for his poor luck & this right here creates a sympathetic character out of our protagonist & Mr.Srinivas milks this plot point like a Right wing sycophant with a cow fetish. Almost every interaction Bantu has with every other character reiterates to us & him about his misfortune that in turn will create a sense of sympathy & most importantly raises a curiosity in us to see how he goes about righting this wrong & get his due & that is how you engage the audience, by making us invest in the journey of the protagonist, emphasis on the word “ENGAGE”. Mr.Srinivas also finds a subtle yet brilliant way of highlighting the importance of consent without being heavy handed or didactic. It’s also established that Bantu is averse to lying & he would rather tell the truth & suffer it’s consequences than lie. All the plot points are set up beautifully, so far so good.

ACT-2 – This begins with Bantu getting in the good looks of his biological father by virtue of his inherent character & some deeds he does, but in this course he puts himself in a precarious position of being not liked by his biological mother played by Ms.Tabu (she doesn’t have much to do except sulk) & also stands to lose his object of affection played by Ms.Hegde, all because of his said virtue. We also get some rote bad guys who are there only to move the plot along & inevitably make Bantu & his biological father cross paths & Bantu finally gets to learn the truth about his birth courtesy of some happenstance & it is here that things shift into the next gear all the while showing us that, to quote Mr.Srinivas “we can only give a person a position but not the stature that comes with that position, which has to be earned” & most importantly puts Bantu in a very exciting position (at least when viewed from a story tellers perspective) & raises our curiosity to zenith by positing two questions to us, “How would a man, who lives by a code of truth & honor would react to the fact that his entire life has been a lie & the guilty party is none other than his father?”, “will Bantu overcome his biological mothers dislike for him?”, at this point I was hooked in , deeply engaged with the movie & was seething with anticipation & excitement at the many number of directions the story could take in the rest of the two acts (second half).

ACT -3 – The third act starts strong with Bantu refusing to use the new found information to seek retribution , but to free himself of the burden of being a failure in the eyes of his father. The rest of the third act is a rehash of the favorite trope of Mr.Srinivas, I.E to get the protagonist lodged in someone else’s house & raise hell. In this film Bantu does the said deed courtesy of some other hapless characters sprinkled in to bring in some dose of comedy & as expected he takes care of the issues plaguing the family like the fledgling family business , sort out the chinks in the personal lives of his biological parents without even drawing a drop of sweat on his brow. Watching this, one can’t help but get a sense of deja vu partly due to the fact that this all looks like a filler till the final act kick in & partly due to the fact that we’re not engaged anymore by the proceedings as Mr.Srinivas decided to play it safe by toning down the intensity of the film by substituting it with run of the mill entertainment. To his credit Mr.Srinivas never goes overboard . I guess even someone as prolific a writer as Mr.Srinivas isn’t immune to the agony of the much dreaded third act.

ACT-4 – By this time due to the virtue of the excellent first half & the bearable third act we enter into the last 40 mins of the film, still very much invested in it , everything is in place for the protagonist to face the music & get the answers for the central dramatic question posted in the first half of the film. So, do we get the answers we’re looking for?

If I have to come up with an analogy to draw a distinction b/w the first three acts & the last act, it’s like this, if the questions put forth by the former are akin to the complex questions that are asked to a candidate appearing for his Masters in philosophy exam, the answers given to us by the latter are written by a drunk kindergartener with learning disabilities I.E silly, redundant, whimsical & farcical. It is here that I feel that the movie completely falls apart, here we see Mr.Srinivas fall prey to his old habits of pandering to the audience & playing it extra safe complete with Gabbar singesque sequence in the form of medley of songs belonging to all the superstars of our industry performed by yours truly Bantu, now, I’m not a prude who detests a chuckle or two but it’s the time where it comes that irks me. This should’ve been the act where all the principles, world views & the emotions driving the protagonist should be questioned & challenged by the opposing forces & out of this chaos the protagonist should emerge a changed man for better or worse, but we never get any chance to explore such complexities but instead of it what we get is a gamut of tried & tested formulaic plot points (if we can even call them that) including but not limited to a mandatory pre-climax catchy song , a fight set to a folk song & a twist so banal & so contrived that it made me throw up my hands in frustration. It’s particularly frustrating to see such brilliant set up thrown down the drain just for the comfort of familiarity, given the talent Mr.Srinivas has this act could’ve been truly electrifying but instead we’re treated with a bland final act that leaves a bad aftertaste.

I do not wish to write an opprobrium about Mr.Srinivas. I’m a huge admirer of Mr.Srinivas’s writing & directing especially when it’s not constrained by the myopic view of “commercial cinema” as evidenced in “Athadu”, which is arguably the greatest Telugu film made in the last 30 years or so. Mr.Srinivas is a proponent of utilitarianism by nature, a sage by virtue of his writing & a revolutionary at heart & we can see all these aspects of him shine through his films & speeches. I’m just disappointed by the misuse of his MASSIVE potential & hence my lament. I know that the chances of Mr.Srinivas reading this are slim but if he is,

Allu Arjun makes strong comments on nepotism

0

Stylish Star Allu Arjun makes a strong comeback with Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo that is directed by Trivikram. The makers arranged a Thanks Meet of the film today and Allu Arjun during his speech spoke about nepotism. He said that he has been asked several times about nepotism during his recent interviews. Here is what Allu Arjun feels about nepotism in his words:

I will explain about nepotism in my own words. Most of them feel that a family dominates from generations stopping the talent. Yes, nepotism exists.

A priest gives his profession to his son and then to his grandson. We as actors too dedicated our lives to entertain the fans and audience. My grandfather did this and then my father, now I am doing the same. We are just here to entertain the audience.

If you feel this is nepotism, it is yes. We are surrendered to the audience from the past few generations. This is the real meaning of nepotism.

Telugu star Allu Arjun yet to get ‘great’ Bollywood offers

0

Telugu star Allu Arjun is keen on exploring the “new terrain” by making his Bollywood debut. He says he is generally flooded with Bollywood offers but is yet to get the “great ones”.

His 2008 Telugu film “Parugu” was remade in Hindi as “Heropanti”. Many of his films have been dubbed in Hindi.

Asked if he has considered acting in remakes of his own films or do a Bollywood film some day, Arjun told IANS: “Yeah, a full-fledged Hindi film is something that I am interested in. I think any south Indian actor would be interested because it (Bollywood) is such a big industry and a new terrain to explore.”

“I think it’s about the right project and director with the right team,” added the artiste, whose debut film “Gangotri” as a lead actor released in 2003.

Has he got any offers so far? “Not any great ones. We keep getting something or the other, but nothing great,” said the “Arya” actor.

Many south Indian actors like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ram Charan and Dulquer Salmaan have tried their hands in Hindi films. Even though some of their films met with success, they don’t quite enjoy the same kind of fan following or stardom that they do back home.

“I think it is a matter of success. You can take the example of Dhanush. He did a Bollywood film (‘Raanjhanaa’). It worked really well. I think it all depends on the film. Dulquer did (Bollywood) films. I don’t think they worked that much,” said Arjun.

“To be a big actor in Bollywood, the key is consistency. I think consistenly these people have either not been showing interest or delivering…,” he added.

Arjun’s latest Telugu film “Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo” has many known Bollywood faces such as Tabu and Pooja Hegde along with songs by Armaan Malik and Shreya Ghoshal. Is this his way of inching closer to Bollywood?

“Sometimes we feel that some of the Bollywood actors suit the role. More Bollywood actors like Murali Sharma and Sachin Khedekar have also worked on the film. It’s just that sometimes we feel that we need somebody from outside to bring in freshness. That’s why we go for Bollywood. I don’t think that is anyway going closer to Bollywood,” he said about the Trivikram directorial that will be dubbed in Hindi “much later”.

The son of producer Allu Aravind did introduce the regional film to a wider audience through national media.

“My father and uncle have been doing great work in south. All these years, I feel, there is a lot of gap between north and south in terms of information and appreciation of each other’s work,” said the actor, who comes from a family of actors and producers.

“Of late, because of social media, everybody gets to see everybody’s work and the lines are getting blurred. I think it is time to exhibit (your work), break the wall that’s been separating us. We always think that ‘Okay, this film is not going to release in Bollywood, so what’s the point of promoting it for national media. There is no immediate tangible result for this film’. I think this mindset should change.

“All the actors should step up and start exhibiting their films to national media. Eventually they will get to know and will help the industry,” said Arjun.

“Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo” hit the screens on Sunday on the festive occasion of Sankranthi. Around the same time, other biggies’ films also released.

“Sankranthi is a season when every year, there are two to three big films that release. Competition is something that is always there. There is nothing to feel nervous about. It is part of our job,” said Arjun.

“Our movies are spaced out. We are not clashing on the same date. Rajinikanth’s ‘Darbar’ released on January 9, Mahesh Babu’s film (‘Sarileru Neekevvaru’) on January 11, mine on January 12 and another one (‘Entha Manchi Vadavura’) on January 15. The season is so good that almost all the films do well,” he added.

“Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo”, a family entertainer, already has a hit soundtrack that features numbers such as “Samajavaragamana” and “Butta Bomma”.

“The songs have become a sensation. The soundtrack has become one of biggest trump cards of the film. Every actor has a strength. One of my core strengths is music. That’s why we have focussed a lot more on the music of the film,” said Arjun, who’s also popular for his dance moves.

Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo movie review

Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo review

Telugu360 Rating – 3.25

After missing out 2019, Allu Arjun is testing his luck at box office this year with Trivikram Srinivas’ celluloid Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo which is releasing in a grand way all over. Can Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo withstand the tough competition at box office this Sankranti and emerge as winner? Let’s find out.

Story :

Valmiki ( Murali Sharma ) swaps his new born baby with his millionaire boss Ramachandra( Jayaram)’s baby, in a hospital. Only evidence for the swap is a nurse who goes to coma after the incident. Valmiki, a middle class dad, raises his boss’s son Bantu (Allu Arjun ) and ensures the boy never goes near the original parents who live in Vaikunthapuram ( The palace name) .  After more than 20 years, Bantu learns about his original parents. Bantu then enters vaikunthapuram, rest of the story is how he resolves the issues his parents’ family is facing.

Analysis:

After establishing the premise of baby swapping, director Trivikram simultaneously narrates a middle class family life style, a rich family problems until the protagonist knows about his original parents. Being from middle class family, Bantu’s struggle with his dad Valmiki ( Murali Sharma) has been established in lighter vein manner. On other side, millionaire Ramachandra (Jayaram) struggles as their son ( Sushant) struggles to look after their businesses . Amulya ( Pooja Hegde ) runs a tourism company , Bantu joins her as assistant.  They start liking each other, meanwhile Ramachandra family come across Amulya’s business profile and wants her as their daughter in law.  As Amulya’s greedy father ( Tanikella Bharani) okays the match Amulya is engaged with Ramachandra’s son ( Sushant) .Meanwhile Bantu learns his past, aims to join the millionaire family and also makes  Amulya’s engagement void.  By interval, Bantu enters the Vaikunthapuram.

First half of the film has ample elements to appeal family audience. Trivikram did not try to generate his trade mark comedy but sticks to the core story without any deviation. Butta Bomma’ song is the good one from first half. Allu Arjun, Pooja thread is cool. Surprisingly, the poetic narration of super hit song Samajaragamana didn’t show up on the screen.

Second half revolves around Bantu fixing the problems within the family.  Jayaram – Tabu ‘s broken relation he fixes , also he takes care of villains who demand share from millionaire Ramachandra’s companies. In Second half more comedy elements have been tried and board room comedy sequence in which Allu Arjun imitates all cinema heroes came out well. Last song ‘ Ramulo Ramulaa ’ is very energetic and best song of the film.

On flip side, villains’ thread is poorly written. They keep on visiting the millionaire’s home or office every now and then but things doesn’t move anywhere. Sushant characterization is half baked one.  Second half has some clichéd narration.

Performances:

Allu Arjun has excelled as Bantu. He neatly delivered performance as middle-class youngster as well as in the second half. After taking a long break, Allu Arjun delivers in a tailor made role. Pooja Hegde is perfect fit for Amulya Role, Nivetha pethuraj fits the bill as sushant’s love. Murli sharma plays most vital character of the film, he did good job as always. Tabu , Sachin Khedeker , Jayaram , Rohini and Navdeep are the other key artists . Rajendra Prasad, Suneel , Vennela Kishore and Rahul Ramakrishna tries comedy division . Samuthirakani , Ajay play villain roles

Positives:

Allu Arjun’s performance

Superior production values

Huge star cast

Family-oriented theme

Negatives:

Thin story plot

Flat Narration and clichéd second half

Verdict:

Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo delivers what it promises. A neatly packaged family movie that never goes overboard. While Trivikram mark comedy punches are missing, he makes it up with good dialogues. A Sankranthi movie you can watch with your family.
