It’s high time Mahesh Babu follow Big B, terminate his “Pan Bahar” contract!

After Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan announced on Monday (today) that he has terminated his contract with a pan masala brand “Kamala Pasand”, the focus has shifted back to Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu who continues to promote tobacco brand “Pan Bahar” along with Bollywood top star Tiger Shroff.

Amitabh clearly stated that he terminated his contract to promote “Kamala Pasand” as it comes under ‘surrogate advertising’.

Similarly, Mahesh Babu’s “Pan Bahar Mouth Freshener” also comes under the surrogate advertising category.

Mahesh Babu resorting to surrogate advertising for the sake of earning few bucks has earned a lot of wrath from not just his fans but also crores of people who took a dig at Mahesh Babu on various social media platforms.

Despite all this, Mahesh Babu continues to promote the tobacco brand even today in utter disregard towards the health of people and his fans.

Not just Amitabh, even Hollywood superstar Pierce Brosnan who earlier promoted “Pan Bahar mouth freshner” prior to Mahesh Babu also terminated his contract after he realised that it comes under ‘surrogate advertising’.

When this advertisement created a furor that Brosnan was promoting tobacco, Brosnan was shocked saying that he was unaware that the company was promoting tobacco brand with his ad and he acted after he was told that it was a mouth freshner. Brosnan had expressed severe anger at the company for promoting tobacco (pan masala) with his advertisement, sued the company for cheating him, and distanced himself from the ad.

Amitabh terminated his contract following the request made by a national anti-tobacco organisation to withdraw himself from the campaign, which promoted pan masala, saying that it would stop the youth from getting addicted to tobacco.

Everyone is aware that Pan Bahar brand is commonly associated with pan masala and Gutkha, a potent mixture of tobacco, crushed betel nut, lime, and clove among other ingredients. It is chewed (and subsequently spat out in bright red streams) by millions of people, who become addicted and face risk of cancer and other health issues.

Advertising alcohol and tobacco brands, which was banned in India as per the Cable Television Network (Regulation) Amendment Act, came into effect on September 8, 2000. However, private TV channels often permit alcohol and tobacco companies to advertise using the proxy route through celebrities. It is common to see a famous sportsperson or movie star endorsing soda water, music compact discs and mouth fresheners that are brand extensions for companies that market alcohol, pan masala or tobacco by the same brand names. This is called surrogate advertising, since under section 5 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, all kinds of advertising of tobacco products, direct and indirect, are prohibited.

Big B terminates contract with pan masala brand

0

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan on his 79th birthday on Monday announced that he has terminated his contract with a pan masala brand, saying that he wasn’t aware that it ‘falls under surrogate advertising’.

A statement issued on behalf of Amitabh read: “‘Kamala Pasand’… a few days after the commercial was aired , Mr Bachchan contacted the brand and stepped out of it last week.

“Upon checking why this sudden move – it was revealed that when Mr Bachchan became associated with the brand, he wasn’t aware that it falls under surrogate advertising.”

The statement from Amitabh’s office further read: “Mr Bachchan has terminated the contract with the Brand, has written to them his termination and has returned the money received for the promotion.”

The move comes after the megastar had been requested by a national anti-tobacco organisation to withdraw himself from the campaign, which promoted pan masala, saying that it would stop the youth from getting addicted to tobacco.

In September, Big B had replied to a social media user, who asked him why he chose to endorse the brand.

The cine icon had then replied: “If some people are getting benefits from an industry, we should not think as to ‘why am I getting associated with it?’ If it is an industry, then we too should think of it as our industry. Now, you may think that I should not be doing it, but I get paid for it.”

Amit ji, do pal mein corona bikhar jayega

“Guzar jayega guzar jayega
Mushqil bahut hai magar waqt hi toh hai
Guzar jayega guzar jayega
Zinda rehne ka yeh jo jazba hai phir ubhar aayega
Guzar jayega guzar jayega”
(This too shall pass, this too shall pass,
It may seem difficult, but it is only a matter of time,
The passion to live life will bounce back again,
This too shall pass, this too shall pass)

From angry young man of yore to wise old man of today

0

“We should learn to appreciate what we have, before time makes us appreciate what we had,” tweeted Amitabh Bachchan earlier this week. The post on the social media site, meticulously catalogued T-3312 and duly explained in Hindi as all his tweets always are, really defines what the Bollywood icons image has been all about in recent times.

Turning 77 on October 11, without showing any sign of slowing down, the tweet is one of numerous that he regularly doles out. Amitabh Bachchan’s profound philosophical spree continues in cyber space and, seen in entirety, it makes him one of Bollywood’s most interesting Internet sensations.

Amitabh Bachchan’s image as a cyber philosopher is in sync with the other big role that has buoyed his superstardom over the recent years — as quizmaster par excellence on “Kaun Banega Crorepati” (KBC). Far removed from the brooding, intense and often street-smart on-screen persona of his heydays, Big B — as industry and fans alike love to call him — has now acquired the benevolent disposition of a public figure who has the experience and wisdom of life to share.

The angry young man of the big screen has morphed into the wise old man of all screens small. That, in essence, underlines the secret to what sustains Amitabh Bachchan’s spectacular career graph even after five decades.

At a time when not just his contemporaries but even actors of the next generation have faded away, Bachchan continues to be relevant in the Indian film industry. The metamorphosis observed above has been significant, aided by intelligent branding and PR.

What is interesting to note is the fact that Amitabh Bachchan has not moved away from the basic role that has underlined his superstardom over the decades. He still continues to be a social messiah. Only, as the rules of the showbiz game changed, so did his approach.

Back in the heydays of the seventies and the eighties, Big B was a messiah on the big screen — an intense action hero who took upon a corrupt system singlehandedly and ensured justice was served. In numerous films e from the cop avatar of “Zanjeer” and “Shahenshah” to the avenging antihero of “Deewar” and Trishul” — Amitabh Bachchan was out to teach the super-rich, super-powerful villains of society a lesson, setting things right in a world gone awry to ensure potboiler poetic justice was served.

Those were the seventies and the eighties. India, having gotten over its initial, post-Independence euphoria of the forties and the fifties, was waking up to sordid truths that hounded a third-world nation. Big B’s larger-than-life messiah on screen was necessary, to spread hope among the masses. The smalltown youth identified with the angst of his popular screen avatar. Angry young man Vijay thrived.

Nearly two decades later, when Big B took to the host’s seat on KBC, that script was lost. The angry young man had been yanked off the popular charts by Shah Rukh Khan’s NRI loverboy. An aged Bachchan looked for a way to reaffirm mass connect. That was where television helped.

Over 11 seasons since its inception in 2000 — and barring the odd ones that were not hosted by him — Big B has played the charming host. If his roles as the angry young man reorganised how mainstream cinema would look at heroism over the next several years, KBC and its host redefined what being an icon of reality television would mean on the Indian small screen.

Importantly, the show redefined Amitabh Bachchan as a brand, too.

By the late 1990s, the signal had become loud and clear: The no-shows of films such as “Lal Badshah”, eMrityudand”, “Sooryavansham”, “Hindustan Ki Kasam” and “Kohram” proved the time was no longer apt for an aging Bachchan to play the traditional hero in Hindi commercial filmdom. His best acts in Bollywood, since then, have been in strong character roles. From “Mohabbatein” in 2000 to “Badla” earlier this year, Amitabh Bachchan has scored only with roles where he does not aim at wooing the crowds with larger-than-life heroics.

Yet, you cannot imagine Amitabh Bachchan as anything but larger than life. For the sake of his megastardom to remain intact, reinvention was necessary. That is where KBC became significant.

Over the years, Bachchan as KBC host has been the person who instils tremendous aspirational value and inspiration to contestants. Over the years the focus of the show has shifted to accommodating the smalltown youth as participants. If this category of population once upon a time sought hope to get back at the corrupt and mighty in Bachchan’s fictional exploits as the angry young man of the big screen, today they find hope to pursue dreams of realising civil services success while facing Bachchan’s tricky questions on KBC.

He is still the messiah — only, this time he is the fueling the hope of dream-fulfillment among the masses.

The image as a wise old man has found due support in his regular Internet outings. And it finds manifestation in a very different area, too — as a mega brand. Pick any commercial featuring Amitabh Bachchan, and you realise as much. From multipurpose app to hair oil, Bachchan is invariably the wise man who knows it all — doling out ample information to a (normally younger) hapless consumer.

The image has morphed successfully — from anger to wisdom, in order to uphold Amitabh Bachchan’s superstardom. The one constant that remains is the rich baritone. Back in the 1970s, he used it to spew those fiery dialogues, to justify his brand of melodrama and often violent pursuit of on-screen justice. Today, the baritone effectively doles out knowledge.

Use of prosthetics not that easy: Amitabh Bachchan

0

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan does not mind using prosthetics for a role, but says using it for long gets tiring.

“As the days pass by the comfort in the portrayal gets to be in an ease that shall be so needed in the final rendition… but yes the prosthetics take their pound of flesh, and to underestimate its after effects would be a fallacy,” Big B wrote in his blog.

“In the land of the large movie making industry in the West, there are rules that using prosthetics by law cannot be kept on for more than three days… a break for the face for a day or two before going at it again… But here, it is non-stop one month… was the same with ‘Paa’.. no complaints… it’s just that the bearing shall become tough as the days go by,” said the cine icon.

The actor feels prosthetics “do a very good and successful job”. “The make-up artists, that eventually are all imported from across the Oceans… we will learn in time,” he said.

It seems the actor was talking about shooting of “Gulabo Sitabo”. He is sporting a grumpy old man’s look. In the first look, the 76-year-old thespian is seen sporting a long beard, spectacles, a head scarf and a prosthetic nose, which made Big B almost unrecognisable.

“It is but strange that the moment you begin to touch the skin of the role assigned to you in film, it gets to be the end of the schedule…not that this one is getting to the end…no not yet…but you get the feel all the same.

“That hesitation in the rendering of the character…those moments which pass by and when thought about hours and days later, as I do now, you feel that justice to the role at that moment could have been better done…it shall be shared with the director but, one wonders if they would give it another try…there shall be insistence of course,” he wrote.

“Gulabo Sitabo”, which also stars Ayushmann Khurrana, is set for release on April 24, 2020. The film, being directed by Shoojit Sircar, is written by Juhi Chaturvedi of the “Piku” fame.

Gulabo Sitabo — a legendary pair of puppet sisters, have been part of Uttar Pradesh’s folklore. The film, apparently, is a takeoff on these two characters and is believed to be a comedy.

Legal notice to Amitabh Bachchan

0

Bollywood mega star Amitabh Bachchan has been served legal notice for dressing up as a lawyer in an advertisement. Bar Council of Delhi issued a legal notice not only to Amitabh Bachchan but also to Everest Spices company, YouTube, and a media house in this regard. Details as below.

Amithab did a commercial ad and in that ad, Amithab is seen sitting in his dressing room, wearing a lawyer’s suit, as two junior artists enter and offer him Pav Bhaji. After eating the meal, the actor applauds the food and the spices used in preparation and endorses that brand. However, Bar Council of Delhi noted that without taking any permissions, Amithab wearing lawyer attire and endorsing a brand is objectionable. It served a notice and notice read, “You are required to immediately stop all such advertisements and also give an undertaking to the Bar Council of Delhi, Bar Council of India and other states Bar Councils that the lawyers’ attire shall not be used in any advertisement in future” .

We will have to wait and see how this is handled. Just wearing a lawyer dress in a commercial is now objected by the bar council. We need to wait and see if court agrees with the argument of bar council. But chances are that, company may withdraw the ad and bar council may stop proceeding further in this issue.
