BJP fails to get its deposit in Atmakur by-poll

1

The BJP has failed to get its deposit in the Atmakur Assembly by-election, results of which were out on Sunday. The counting at the Andhra Engineering College was completed much before it was expected. The results were out before lunch and the YSR Congress had retained the seat with a huge margin of 82,742 votes.

The YSR Congress secured 1,02,074 votes while the BJP secured just 19,332 votes. The BSP secured 4,897 votes followed by NOTA which scored 4,197 votes. This majority was three times higher than the party secured in the 2019 general elections.

The BJP campaigned extensively in the constituency to make its presence felt among the voters. The party had roped in more than a dozen Central leaders including some ministers to woo the voters. The BJP has been present in the constituency for a long time and senior leader Bollineni Krishnaiah contested unsuccessfully in the 2004 election. He then moved to the TDP and lost by a margin of 22,276 votes in the 2019 elections.

The BJP is testing its strength in every Assembly constituency in the state. The leaders are listing the constituencies where they have considerable presence and Atmakur is one of them where the BJP has pinned its hopes. However, the defeat now in the by-election had watered-down their hopes for the next election.

All set for Atmakuru Assembly by-election

0

Things are in place for the by-election to the Atmakur Assembly constituency in Nellore district to be held on June 23. The by-election is held as sitting MLA and Minister Mekapati Gowtham Reddy died of cardiac arrest in February this year.

The YSR Congress fielded Gowtham Reddy’s brother Vikram Reddy for the by-election. The TDP and the Jana Sena are not contesting the election as a practice where the ticket is given to the family members of the deceased MLA.

Only the BJP, besides a dozen independents and registered party candidates are in the fray. The BJP fielded G Bharath Kumar in the by-election. The party campaigned extensively in the constituency even roping in national leaders to campaign.

However, the ruling YSR Congress has a clear edge to win the seat according to the political observers. The BJP is likely to end up in the second place as it has no support from its ally, the Jana Sena, also.

The Election Commission had made all arrangements for the polling in 279 polling booths in the constituency. In all, 1300 personnel are on election duty where 2.08 lakh voters are scheduled to cast their vote.

The counting would be held at the Andhra Engineering College at Atmakru on June 26.

Is Jagan favours contest in Athmakuru?

1

The by-election to the Athmakuru Assembly seat in Nellore district is scheduled to be held on June 23. It is clear that the by-election is all set to be one-sided with the ruling YSR Congress winning the seat without much difficulty.

The by-election was necessitated by the sudden death of sitting MLA and minister Mekapati Goutham Reddy in February this year. The ruling YSR Congress has honoured the decision of the Mekapati family which selected Goutham Reddy’s brother Vikram Reddy to contest the election.

The TDP is likely to keep away from the contest and the ruling party has nominated the family member of the deceased MLA. It was an unwritten agreement among the political parties in Andhra Pradesh not to contest the by-election if the ticket is given to the family members of the deceased legislator.

The BJP too is yet to take a call on contesting the seat. The Jana Sena is in alliance with the BJP and may not join the contest here. The Jana Sena did not support the BJP’s candidate in Badvel by-election last year. The party might follow the same strategy in Athmakuru Assembly seat too.

Though there are two candidates from the two registered parties, it is not known yet whether they would continue in the fray or withdraw the nominations once the major political parties make their stand clear.

However, sources say that chief minister and the ruling party chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is in favour of a contest here. The YSR Congress had completed three years in office by May 30 and Jagan Mohan Reddy wants to test the peoples’ pulse with this by-election. The chief minister is said to be in favour of the contest to know his party’s position among the voters after three years.

It is to be seen if there would be a contest with the TDP or the BJP fielding their candidates or leave it either a unanimous election or a simple contest with a couple of the candidates in the race.
