‘Baahubali 2’ collects over Rs 400 crore in opening weekend

    0

Filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli’s magnum opus “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” has upped the bar for box office earnings for Indian films by amassing Rs 400 crore plus worldwide in its opening weekend since its release on April 28, according to trade experts.

The second part in the “Baahubali” franchise — a fantasy drama about a fictional kingdom — has rewritten box office records, and how.

After zooming past the Rs 100 crore mark on its first day of hitting screens in India, the much-awaited movie which piqued the interest of viewers with the question ‘Why did Kattappa kill Baahubali?’, has kept the audience coming in to find out the answer.

The film, featuring Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, Rana Daggubati and Tamannaah in the lead, released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam in over 6500 screens across India, and in 9000 plus screens worldwide.

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who has presented the Hindi dubbed version of the film, tweeted: “Historic Weekend! Here is the Hindi language all-India Friday (Rs 41 crore), Saturday (Rs 40.5 crore), Sunday (Rs 46.5 crore). Grand total Rs 128 crore.”

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted: “The wave is unstoppable. ‘Baahubali 2′ creates new record.”

Adarsh pointed out how the opening weekend figures of the Hindi version of “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” had surpassed Bollywood biggies such as Salman Khan’s “Sultan” and Aamir Khan’s “Dangal”.

“Sultan” had minted Rs 105.53 crore upon a Wednesday release, and “Dangal” amassed Rs 107.01 crore, he said.

Down south, the response has been tremendous.

In Telugu states, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the earnings are estimated to be beyond Rs 100 crore.

“Going by estimates, the film could have easily grossed over Rs 100 crore from Telangana and Andhra. It has already broken every record of all other big Telugu films,” trade analyst Anand Vanga told IANS.

Trinath, another trade analyst, said there’s no stopping the film at the box office.

“With no competition, the film is making a killing at the ticket window. It could be the first Telugu film to even gross over Rs 200 crore only from Telangana and Andhra. For the next two weeks, the film will have an uninterrupted run at the cinemas,” he said.

In Tamil Nadu, where the film released in nearly 650 screens, it is estimated that the film might have grossed over Rs 30 crore in its opening weekend.

“Sources from within the industry say that the film could have raked in over Rs 30 crore in the state.

“If the early morning shows on April 28 were not cancelled, it could have easily minted another Rs 5 crore,” Trinath said, citing a financial dispute between the producers of the film and its Tamil Nadu distributor.

In Kerala, according to the film’s distributor Global United Media, the film has reportedly grossed over Rs 20 crore in the first three days.

In the US, the film was released via Great India Films, who said in a statement that the film has minted $10.49 million (Rs 68 crore).

Released in over 1100 screens in the US, the film made it to 40 IMAX screens, the highest ever for an Indian film.

From other parts of the world, the film is said to have collected Rs 71 crore in its first three days, trade gurus said.

If the social media buzz and unconfirmed reports are anything to go by, even before its theatrical release, “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” had reportedly earned close to Rs 500 crore from television rights and territory-wise distribution within the country.

The Hindi theatrical rights fetched the makers Rs 120 crore, and in Andhra and Telangana, the film earned the makers Rs 130 crore from the sale of its theatrical rights.

In Tamil Nadu, the film was sold for Rs 47 crore, according to industry insiders, while theatrical rights to the movie in Kerala and Karnataka are said to have been sold for Rs 10 crore and Rs 45 crore respectively. However, there is no official confirmation on these numbers.

Telugu movie audience: Don’t degrade but take pride

    0

Comparison is an act of violence against self. Baahubali- The conclusion and Gautami Putra Satakarni(GPS) are two sides of the same Telugu Film Industry(TFI) Coin. Numerous memes/trolls surfaced comparing both the kings of both movies. These trolls tried to portray Prabhas as ideal king especially the style and grandeur. This degrading one movie, robs the rare gift of heroes who have unique things to offer to audience. Objectification of the king is a topic of discussion for another day, but it is ridiculous to compare.

Bahubali is pure fiction and has very few similarities with epic Mahabharata. GPS on the other hand is based on true-life of an Indian ruler. King Satakarni did not start his journey when he was young. Nobody else can fit better into that role than Balakrishna, who is apt if a person goes by the age of the king.

Bahubali is amazing and every Telugu person should feel proud about the visual wonder. A passionate director Rajamouli worked hard for years to present Bahubali on screen. In contrast, equally passionate director Krish wrapped the GPS shooting in 79 days and his team worked on the graphics for about half a year. Directors don’t think of competing with others, they just go about by their ways.

We ourselves should not defame our works or kings or directors or heroes. Both are never before movies from the industry and Telugu audience must take pride in both movies. It’s acceptable to dislike some movies, but it is not okay to disrespect or degrade work which is about kings who ruled us.

“Thank you everyone who have been with us for the past five years encouraging us at every turn. You have given us such a big success that we can keep it in our hearts for the rest of our lives,” he added.

Actor Prabhas, who is finally relieved of the “Baahubali” franchise after spending nearly five years of his career, says he will now shift his full focus to his upcoming two Telugu projects.

“I have a film each with directors Sujeeth and Radha Krishna. I might work on both these projects simultaneously. We will commence work on Sujeeth’s ‘Saaho’ from next month onwards. My full priority is on completing these projects,” Prabhas told IANS.

Once upon a time there was …… Baahubali – No spoilers

    0

Words will fail to describe the overwhelming feeling of joy, pride and goosebumps I am experiencing after watching this epic called Bahubali. Spectacular, magnanimous, mind blowing …….. add as many adjectives as you want, nothing will encapsulate the experience I have under gone watching this magnum opus. As an ardent movie buff, especially one who has grown up feeding on Indian cinema, I just want shout thank you SS Rajamouli.

Bahubali 1 was a mere introduction to the characters and a pre-cursor to the second installment, Bahubali 2 is where the crux of the story unfolds and grips you with a drama of epic scale. It’s in this film, that the characters of Amarendra Bahubali, Bhallaladeva, Devasena, Bhijaladeva, Kattapa actually grow on us. Continuing from where it left us in BB1, BB2 introduces us to the kingdom of Devasena (Kunthala Rajyam). It’s here where the love story of Devasena and Bahubali is depicted and thsese portions of the film are nothing short of a Visual poetry. If you were awed by the stunning visuals of BB1 then hold your breath for the song Hamsa nava, it’s just out of this world. The story marches forward swiftly involving the conflicts that come to fore between all these characters.

What makes this story epic is the Blockbuster scenes that are throughout the film which gives the viewer goosebumps, thanks to the masterful music composition of MM Keeravani which enhanced these scenes. Be it the introduction scene of Bahubali or the action sequences with Devasena or the interval block, many more scenes will be etched in the movie goer’s memory for a long time.

BB2 is a rare film where the Visual spectacle, the larger than life set pieces never take away the attention from the intriguing drama and emotions of the characters. They only add to the experience. It requires first rate performances to make these characters believable and all the actors involved bring their A game into this film. The VFX shots are of a superior quality than BB1 and needless to say all the technical aspects involved are truly word class.

As I walked out of the theater BB2 filled me with a sense of pride, a feeling of high that a telugu film, an Indian film has been made which can be proudly presented at an international stage. Hats off to SS Rajamouli for his courage to dream and perseverance to make it come alive. Generations to come will discuss the legend of Bahubali. Indian Cinema will be Before Bahubali and After Bahubali. Once upon a time ……..there was Bahubali.

*note : This is not a review but an expression of joy felt by a movie buff.

Baahubali 2 : 1500 pieces of Jewellery were specially designed

    0

While the extravagant visuals and the breathtaking action episodes in Baahubali franchise hogged the limelight, what deserves a special mention are the flamboyantly designed costumes and the glittering jewellery wore by the principal cast.

It is learnt that approximately 1500 pieces of jewellery have been used in the film. The coveted designer brand Amrapalli has specially carved out the traditional earrings , the dazzling Bangles, the lavish necklaces, nose rings, armlets, rings and maang – tikkas for the film. Designers used silver metal with gold painting to give authetic appeal for the jewellery and therefore to give more detailing to the characters and to carry the essence.

The jewellery was handmade and has been delivered to the team in a short span of time. Reportedly, the makers have spent a fortune for the costumes and jewellery in the film.

    Baahubali – 2 Review : A Riveting Finale

    (Sridhar Sattiraju)

The day of reckoning has arrived . The conclusion of India’s most audacious film in over a generation is now upon us. After drawing us with curious narration, outstanding visual effects and a nagging question in the first part which the nation wants to know, director S S Rajamouli unveils the kernel of the plot which defined all the palace intrigue, suspense and aura behind Bahubali in the first part. Rajamouli succeeds to a large extent in sucking us into the fabled world of Mahishmati and telling a story the way it occurred to the maker team. Even though the narrative is longer at around 170 minutes, the overall feel gives you more highs and goosebump moments than one can expect in a monolithic story line that is quite predictable. The film is technically and aesthetically more enchanting than the first part.

What is impressive about the conclusion is the degree of intensity and emotions surcharging the atmosphere which the director is skilled at. The film opens with a recap of the first part in the titles but quickly gets down to business of characterizing the main cast into deeper nuances and shades. In that sense, the first half shows the entertaining repertoire of Rajamouli with all the magic that VFX embellishes the screen with – there is comedy, romance and some beautiful visuals which transport you to a world above the skies. The romance and playfulness between the lead pair creates rift between Prabhas and the other royalty but the director navigates the whole gamut of emotions to drive towards the coronation sequence which is one of the finest scenes. The soul of the first half is the subtle romance between Devasana (Anushka) and Amarendra Bahubali (Prabhas) which is aesthetically enhanced by the two songs – “Hamsa Naava” and “Muripala Mukunda”. You can’t exorcise a director from his pet obsessions and no doubt Rajamouli uses the technique used in films like “Mayabazar” and “Nartanasala” (especially between Arjuna and Uttara Kumara ) to create humor between Prabhas and Subbaraju. Even the romance between Anushka and Prabhas is built with thea same tenderness of mistaken identity that was used in many of Rajamouli’s earlier films. Though a beaten path, the screen sizzles with the pair’s lead chemistry as well as the chivalry of the Senior Baahubali in protecting the woman of his dreams from danger. The first half dazzles you, mesmerize you and deserves a standing ovation.

The second half is what takes Rajamouli’s direction a few notches down because of the uneven balance between sequences and songs. A tedium of battle sequences and undefatigable cruelty greets us in the flashback as well as the climax. The end comes quickly with the return of all the present characters who surround the world of the younger Bahubali and by then, fatigue sets in as the director rushes through the motions. But that is the essence of a Rajamouli film, you don’t get plastic faced characters – you either get a larger-than-life character or nothing; Rana is exasperatingly violent and menacing till the end, Nazar shows more variety and depth to his role compared with the first part, while Prabhas is consistently benevolent and invincible almost till the end.

The weakest characterisations in the second part are those of Queen Sivagami (Ramyakrishna) and Kattappa (Satyaraj) but these could be cinematic illusions created by the director in nudging us into liking or disliking some characters. Ramyakrishna’s characterization is nowhere closer to the recently released novel of Anand Neelakantan (The Rise of Sivagami) but it shows a lot of inconsistency in the range of emotions portrayed by her compared with the first part. Since story-telling is the main strength of Rajamouli, one can gloss over the minor faults in direction – like how the Senior Bahubali calls himself “Sivudu” when someone asks his name (when in fact, the name was kept for the younger Bahubali by the villagers) or the rare lapse of showing a flash attack by Kalakeya’s son without an intro. Another omission in the second part is why someone like actor Sudeep- Kannada Superstar – did not come back in another cameo  – would have enhanced the thrills in the film had he come back. As a director, Rajamouli shows his class in getting the mixture of emotions and entertainment better than in the first half. If one were to view this film as a long saga of four to five hours the way films used to be made in the seventies, then one can expect two intervals and a rollercoaster of emotions. But because the director and his backers chose to present the film in two parts, one can see some patchwork in the way night shots and war sequences were shown in the conclusion; the wow factor you had in the first film was missing in the war sequences – all the director used is simple laws of physics using kinetic energy to thwart the enemies and use of palm trees as propellants. Similarly, actors like Tamannah and Rohini and others make a brief but forgettable appearance as some serial actors who show up for taking a bow; they deserved a better sign-off. Performance-wise, Anushka steals the thunder with the looks of a million-dollar baby, she is dressed like a queen and oozes class and royalty in every shot. Looking at  her gait and looks, you can’t believe she is the same heroine who acted in films like “Size Zero”. In crucial situations, she even outclasses Ramyakrishna. Prabhas as the genteel warrior and savior of the masses outshines everybodoy else with his looks and body language – as Amarendra Bahubali he creates a magnetic aura that will be talked about for a long time. Rana Daggubati gets a wicked characterisation but there’s something missing in dialogue diction – he looked classy in the first part with his rich command over long dialogues but here relapses into  a dialect unbecoming of a king. Satyaraj as Kattappa maintains the mood of an obedient general.

    Technical Values

Technically, the film has some arresting visuals in the first half which will linger on – that ship resembling a Spanish Armada tapestry, the huge elephant cave as the mouth of the Mahishmati kingdom, the boat carrying the lead pair with the entourage into the waters before lifting off into the skies vectored by swans transforming into cloud-like horses and the synchronized shooting of the arrows by the lead pair to polish off the intruders – all these are stunning piece of artwork and visual effects which are worth paisa vasool. If only the director concentrated less on the VFX and showing the motions of war, you have a director who can combine the brilliance of Cecelle B demille, V.Shantaram and a Subhash Ghai in one hat of a director. But to push so many frontiers with a fable story and to fire the imagination of billions of fans around the world is an unparalleled feat and for all the effort, more power to Rajamouli and Co. Music wise, Keeravani’s effort is a mixed bag. He makes a valiant effort to flood the background score with modern and ancient instrumentation that doesn’t always fit with the times but passes off as an average effort. Cinematography is good in parts. Prabhas and Anushka take the film on their shoulders and Prabhas steals the honors with just his eyes more than the gallantry he projects consistently.

On the whole, Baahubali-2  is a long story well-told that has ended not too soon. But it is an experiment definitely worth the wait despite minor flaws. It is a tribute to the story-telling ability imbibed by Rajamouli. A must watch, pride of Telugu Cinema.
