BJP to spoil Jagan plan on massive temples lands

0

The BJP AP leaders are eager to pick up fights with the ruling YCP on every eligible issue. They have got hold of a very sensitive issue relating to the temple lands in the state. The BJP is all out to collide head-on with the Jagan government by totally opposing the distribution of massive temples lands to the poor families.

CM Jaganmohan Reddy has made a grand promise to give house sites to nearly 25 lakh poor families in the state. He is talking a lot about this since coming to power. His confidence came from the reports that there are 11,000 acres of endowment lands under various temples. A clear move is made now to go ahead with this. The endowments department began making markings at the temple lands.

Sensing trouble, the BJP leaders have begun issuing warnings that they will not keep silent. The BJP is making plans to take their struggle to any length if Jagan Reddy doesn’t go back on this move. Will YCP boss risk rubbing the BJP on the wrong side?

Has Centre really no role in Andhra Capital issue?

0

The BJP leaders are attacking the ruling YCP a lot on the issue of rumours about shifting of Amaravati. At the same time, they say that the Centre is not concerned with the Andhra Capital issue as it’s the sole concern of the State government. Does the BJP really mean what it says? In the beginning, its leaders said similar words that the Centre has no role in the Polavaram project works but later the Project Authority and Union Minister Shekhawat started making objections against the re-tendering.

The BJP leaders are indeed speaking in riddles to YCP Circar. On the one side, they are saying that CM Jagan is having all the powers to shift the capital. On the other hand, they are demanding that Jagan should not do anything to hurt the interests of Amaravati farmers. By stopping multi-crore Capital City project works, YCP Government has already damaged the prospects of farmers.

Going by hints already given, Jagan Regime is not going to complete high-rise towers for which foundations are already laid at huge cost during the previous government. Now, the local residents are putting high hopes that the BJP will not make it that easy for YCP to shift the capital.

BJP sketch to use CBI against TRS Regime

0

The BJP Telangana leaders are raising their voice strongly against the alleged irregularities in purchase of power by the government at very high rates. They say that the TRS government bought power at Rs 5.5 per unit in open court though the government power companies are offering at just Rs 4.5. Why is BJP targeting TRS Regime in such a big way especially on the energy sector.

No ruling TRS leaders are openly countering the BJP charges considering the sensitive nature of the issue. However, Transco and Genco CMD D Prabhakar Rao has begun issuing counters to BJP on behalf of the TRS. This has enraged the rivals and BJP State President K Laxman asked whether Prabhakar Rao has taken membership of the TRS party. In his turn, Prabhakar Rao said that the power companies are ready to face even a CBI enquiry to prove that they have not indulged in any irregularities in power purchases.

The BJP leaders are now taking advantage of this challenge and they started efforts to get a CBI enquiry ordered by Modi government. Political circles are full of rumours that this controversy is going to give really deep trouble to the KCR Circar. The BJP is effectively using the CBI to cripple other parties governments in different states. It happened in Andhra as CBI targetted TDP leaders prior to 2019 election.

BJP team tours in Andhra Capital area

0

BJP State President Kanna Laxminarayana, MP Sujana Chowdary and others visited stalled buildings in Amaravati Capital City area. They came to to express their solidarity to farmers who gave 33,000 acres. Their visit assumed significance amid signals given by Jagan Circar on the shifting of the Andhra Capital. The BJP leaders’ visit coincided with the arrival of CM Jaganmohan Reddy to Amaravati after a day long visit to Delhi.

Kanna told Amaravati farmers that their party would extend total support to their cause. He reminded them of the Padayatra promise made by Jaganmohan Reddy not to shift the capital out of Amaravati. Kanna mockingly said that the same YCP leader has gone back on his promise now. Had Jagan talked about the shifting of capital, what would be the reaction of coastal districts in the election?

Kanna said that he had supported the Amaravati Capital City right from the beginning. He reminded Jagan of his repeated statement that he would not break any promise. But now Jaganmohan Reddy has made it a habit of breaking promises to all sections of people.

BJP sketch to claim credit for Polavaram completion

0

The ruling YCP in Andhra is in for a major shock soon politically. The BJP leaders have begun a secret plan to take control over the remaining works of Polavaram project. Their big plan is to get the Centre complete Polavaram and then claim the credit for successfully completing the state’s lifeline irrigation project. For decades, Polavaram has been like a sentiment that was long unfulfilled for various reasons. Even the previous Chandrababu government could complete only 70 per cent works. The major part of relief and rehabilitation works is still pending.

The BJP Andhra leaders are hell bent on removing control of Jagan Circar on the project now. BJP national spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao, former minister Manikyala Rao and other leaders are already holding talks with Polavaram Project Authority CEO RK Jain and other Central officials on how to go about the project completion.

The BJP leaders’ activities have sent shock waves among YCP leaders. Jagan Regime is not in a position to either oppose the BJP’s intervention in Polavaram works nor support the same for political reasons. On their part, BJP Andhra leaders want to highlight Polavaram completion as one of their major achievements to ask for votes. They are going forward with a clear plan as their strong belief is that the Modi-Shah duo are going to hold Jamili One Nation One Election in 2022.

Amaravati sentiment ruling over Opposition parties

2

Andhra Capital City issue has become a unifying factor among all the Opposition parties in the state these days. Till now, the BJP, Jana Sena and Left parties did not react much on the stopping of Capital works. This is because they have their own negative views against Chandrababu Naidu’s grand plans for building Amaravati global city without considering the interests of local farmers and farm workers. There were also allegations of making it a real estate venture to benefit specific groups.

The scene changed dramatically overnight. A new Amaravati sentiment has gripped the people of coastal areas especially the twin Capital districts of Krishna and Guntur. The BJP, Jana Sena and Left parties have realised the prevailing sentiment among the people in favour of Capital. They started voicing their support effectively. Now, the Amaravati sentiment has reached the proportions of AP Special Status sentiment in the coastal region.

CM Jagan stopped Capital works the moment he came to power but he has not so far clarified what his alternative plans are for building Andhra Capital. His party has created lot of confusion which made the people lose confidence in his regime’s Capital policy. It is already too late for Jagan to suppress Amaravati sentiment now. If he does not initiate damage control steps, it will lead to a popular agitation with all Opposition parties taking active party.

BJP objects to Jagan’s reverse reports to Modi

0

The shocked BJP AP leaders are hitting back strongly at the statements of YCP MP Vijayasai Reddy. They are asking whether Vijayasai is thinking that he is much closer to the Modi-Shah duo than the BJP AP leaders themselves. Vijayasai has said that PM Modi is being informed about Jagan Regime’s all reverse decisions. But BJP leaders are saying that Jagan is doing a very bad mistake here as AP CM is just informing Modi after taking and implementing these decisions on Polavara, PPAs, etc. Here also, Jagan is following his reverse policy by giving reverse reports to the Centre. What else Modi could do other than just listening in this matter? Has Jagan Circar taken prior approval of Modi or Central agencies?

Reacting on Vijayasai’s recent comments, BJP AP President Kanna Laxminarayana has asked why has Jagan Circar gone against the requests of Polavaram Project Authority which is the agency of the Central government. PM Modi will ultimately go by what this Authority says. Kanna clarified that Modi’s will not tolerate any violation of chain of command and his government is keen on ensuring continuous development and credibility.

Kanna Laxminarayana has further said that the YCP government seemed doubtful of its own decisions which is why it is passing on the responsibility on to the Centre. But Jagan Circar is already paying heavily for its own unwise decisions. AP High Court has already reversed Jagan’s reverse tendering idea.

KTR warns about curfews under BJP rule?

1

TRS Working President KT Rama Rao has issued an indirect warning that communal harmony and public peace will be disturbed if the Bharatiya Janata Party comes to power in Telangana. He asked whether the TRS government has not successfully ensured zero curfews in Hyderabad in the past five years. KTR accused BJP of trying every petty plan to provoke people along communal and caste lines so as to get political benefits.

The TRS leader is hitting back strongly at the remarks made by BJP Working President JP Nadda. KTR warned that the TRS would not keep silent if the BJP tries to implement its bad plans in Telangana like in other states. Telangana is not Karnataka where the BJP is carrying out its murky political strategies successfully.

KTR asked why the Modi government at the Centre did not release a single rupee though Niti Ayog has recommended Rs. 5,000 crore for Telangana Kakatiya Mission. Is any BJP government in any state implementing so many welfare programmes like in Telangana? KTR said that Telangana is giving pensions of Rs. 12,000 crore while the Centre is distributing just Rs. 200 crore. The Centre is just copying some welfare programmes of TRS government but it is not passing on full benefits to people.

‘BJP, RSS want to end reservations in garb of discussion’

0

The Congress on Monday hit out at the ruling BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), accusing them of being anti-Dalit and anti-backward and said they want to end reservations in the backdrop of discussions.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, senior Congress leader P.L. Punia said, “Baba Saheb B.R. Ambedkar believed that socio-economic inequality would be a challenge. Thus reservation was brought in place for the same reason.”

“But the BJP has always been trying to change the Constitution. They always advocate abolishing the Constitution. Now they want to debate reservation,” he said.

Punia said that the BJP tried to end reservations in educational institutions and that it also played an important role in weakening the SC/ST Act.

“During the debate they said that there are some shortcomings in it and it can be misused,” he said referring to the debate on SC/ST Act. “Based on this, the Supreme Court gave its decision,” he said.

Slamming the government, Punia said, “Ending reservation is a well-planned strategy of the BJP and the RSS. They want to end reservations in the backdrop of discussions, which is condemnable and shows their ill thoughts.”

The Congress leader’s remarks came a day after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat stirred a row after he said that there should be a conversation in a harmonious atmosphere between those in favour of reservations and those against it.

Criticising the BJP for diverting the real issues, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said, “It has become the habit of the BJP and RSS to keep raking up issues and creating conflict in the society, issues on which opinions are sharply divided that can divert voters’ attention from day to day problems of the government.”

He said the only motive behind BJP’s decisions is to distract people. Citing examples, he said, “Be it demonetisation or Article 370. People have to understand this trap of BJP, that they try to divert attention from the main issues. The atrocities on tribals and Dalits are not hidden.”

Congress’ Dalit face Udit Raj said that the BJP does not accept the Indian flag and the Constitution. “On December 11, 1948, the RSS had organised a big rally at Ramleela Maidan in Delhi and they also burnt the effigy of Ambedkar.”

Udit Raj alleged that by ending reservations the BJP’s motive is to make people of different communities fight among themselves.

Why are few BJP leaders soft on Jagan?

0

BJP State President Kanna Lakshminarayana has long experience in direct elections and he was a former minister in YSR Cabinet. He has been very open in his criticism of CM YS Jaganmohan Reddy and the ruling party leaders. Thus, most non-Brahmin leaders of AP BJP are now hell bent on exposing misdeeds and misrule of Jagan whose policies are becoming unpopular in just three months of his coming to power.

But still, BJP Brahmin leaders like GVL Narasimha Rao and IYR Krishna Rao are very soft towards Jagan Reddy government. This is despite the fact that Modi-Shah duo have taken critical stand of Jagan and the Centre has already stopped all cooperation to AP. That is because Modi-Shah duo are hopeful of forming the next BJP government in AP considering inexperience and ineffectiveness of Jagan Circar.

Analysts say that GVL and IYR are not leaders who have come from the grassroots. They have no relevance in direct elections. They are failing to see ground realities but extending indirect support to Jagan. This is due to Jagan Circar being soft on some Brahmin officers like Chief Secretary LV Subrahmanyam and those who are close to IYR. Some leaders have already taken GVL and IYR attitudes to BJP national leadership notice. They say that any soft stance on Jagan any further will only hurt BJP chances to emerge an alternative in AP. Changes are expected sooner than later.

Change in strategy by TRS to counter BJP?

With its direct or indirect support to controversial Bills, TRS appears to be redrawing its strategy to counter BJP, which is on an overdrive to strengthen itself in Telangana.

In the just-concluded Parliament session, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) backed Narendra Modi-government in Parliament by either voting for the Bills or facilitating their approval by staging walk-out.

Under attack from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its alleged “appeasement politics” and for being in alliance with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), TRS seems to have started reconciling to the new realities in state politics.

Analysts say TRS President and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao is apparently looking to blunt the BJP attack by backing the government on various issues including the contentious ones.

The party not only openly supported BJP-led NDA government on scrapping Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir but also staged walk-out from Rajya Sabha during voting on the Bill to criminalise triple talaq, thus helping the government to have smooth sailing.

On both the issues and also on the Bill to amend Right to Information Act, TRS took a stand in total variance with its ally AIMIM. For its stand on triple talaq, the ruling party came under sharp criticism from some Muslim groups, who termed this as a “betrayal” and vowed to teach the party a lesson.

KCR, as the TRS chief is popularly known, did not want to give BJP a chance to sharpen its attack and fish in troubled waters by luring some party leaders. BJP leaders have been claiming that many TRS leaders were waiting to defect to BJP.

After winning four Lok Sabha seats including the three it wrested from TRS, BJP is an overdrive to expand the party base in Telangana. With the party polling 20 per cent votes, BJP sees itself as the alternative of TRS.

That Telangana is on top of BJP agenda was demonstrated by the fact that party chief and Union Home Minister Amit Shah chose it for launching the membership drive from the state. Several central leaders of the party also actively participated in the campaign.

Buoyed by its best-ever performance in Lok Sabha elections in Telangana, BJP is apparently looking to polarize Hindu votes in its favour. The morale of the party leaders is high as they feel they have replaced Congress as the second major political force in the state.

In an attempt to further strengthen the party, BJP’s state chief K. Laxman has invited Amit Shah to enroll as the party member in Hyderabad. The BJP President has also been invited for Hyderabad liberation day celebrations on September 17.

BJP had been targeting KCR for not celebrating the liberation day and Amit Shah stated on many occasions that the TRS is scared of AIMIM.

It was on September 17, 1948 that then Hyderabad State acceded to the Indian Union following Indian Army operation. Successive governments in undivided Andhra Pradesh stayed away from officially celebrating the day.

BJP’s working President JP Nadda is also visiting Telangana on August 18. Laxman has claimed that many TRS leaders will join BJP in Nadda’s presence.

Though firmly in saddle with overwhelming majority in Assembly, TRS is nevertheless concerned over the rise of BJP, proved with the massive inroads it made in Lok Sabha elections.

The regional party is trying to deny any opportunity to BJP to cash in on, especially in view of the coming elections to urban local bodies.

BJP leaders are confident of sweeping the polls in Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Adilabad, the three Lok Sabha seats BJP wrested from TRS. They also hope to do well in Greater Hyderabad, where the party retained Secunderabad seat.

As BJP was gearing up to woo Hindu voters, especially in urban pockets, KCR seem to have changed his strategy to counter BJP by differing with his ally AIMIM over various issues.

Unlike Assembly and Lok Sabha polls when TRS and AIMIM had undeclared understanding, AIMIM is likely to contest municipal elections on its own.

Political analyst Telakapalli Ravi, however, says regional parties play “great game of opportunism” and TRS is no exception.

“Remember how KCR outwitted BJP CMs in reaching out Modi on demonetisation. There is no occasion when he confronted the Centre except certain symbolic fights and election speeches .His projected Federal front was seen more as a ploy and immediately after the results he declared BJP is not an enemy,” Ravi told IANS.

“Perhaps KCR is the only leader sailing with Majlis yet comforting Modi. Similarly, TRS voting for 370 Bill is condoned by Majlis. This is great game of opportunism practiced by many regional outfits including YSRCP and TDP,” Ravi added.

Why Jagan talks about good relations with Centre?

0

The changing strategies of CM Jaganmohan Reddy are surprising even experienced political pundits in Telugu states. Now, he is talking about the robust and good relations his government is having with the BJP government at the Centre. But, it is an indisputable fact that AP BJP leaders have already launched scathing attacks every day on Jagan Circar on sand, PPAs, Amaravati, Praja Vedika, violence in villages, police discrimination, etc.

Jagan had no choice but to talk about his government’s stability in the face of mounting criticism from all sides. Delegates from nearly 30 countries took part in the Diplomatic Outreach event. CM tried hard to remove doubts and apprehensions among them about the Modi government’s differences with AP on PPAs, Polavaram, etc.

Prior to elections, Jagan accused Chandrababu regime of not fighting and agitating against the Centre for Special Status. But now, Jagan simply took Special Status as a laughing matter for which he need not revolt against Modi. Jagan’s talk of AP’s good relations with Telangana and Centre triggered political speculation. Analysts say that it showed how Jagan is becoming concerned about his party’s growing gap with BJP. He enjoyed total blessings of Modi Circar during elections but that will not be possible any more going by the emerging political conditions.

Will Modi Circar support Jagan Navaratnalu?

0

There has been no special financial support from the Centre to Jagan Circar’s ‘Navaratnalu’ programmes in the past two months. Now, AP is not even getting Special Package that was received during Chandrababu regime. Obviously, the state is under considerable financial stress which is causing delays even in salaries payments to the government employees.

Immediately after arriving from Jerusalem, CM Jagan rushed to Delhi and prolonged his stay only to impress upon the Centre for extending all possible support AP. He made a special appeal to PM Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman to extend financial support to Navaratnalu, which requires thousands of crores. But there are AP BJP leaders who are already criticising Jagan. Will Centre respond positively?

Analysts say that BJP has ideological differences with YCP though it helped Jagan to win elections. Now, BJP wants to weaken YCP which is possible only when Central funds are stopped for programmes like Navaratnalu. If Jagan depends on BJP support, he will face a bigger financial crisis in the state because of his too many Cash Transfer Programmes. Chandrababu regime also faced similar stoppage of Central funds which eventually made him to look for revenue generation from within the state.

Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj passes away

Sushma swaraj

Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj died at the AIIMS here on Tuesday night following cardiac arrest, hospital sources said. She was 67.

The veteran BJP leader was brought to AIIMS in a critical condition but soon passed away, the sources said.

Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Prakash Javadekar and BJP Working President J.P. Nadda arrived at the hospital as they got the news.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of Sushma Swaraj, who was External Affairs Minister in his first government, lauding her services in helping Indians abroad.

“An excellent administrator, Sushma Ji set high standards in every Ministry she handled. She played a key role in bettering India’s ties with various nations. As a Minister we also saw her compassionate side, helping fellow Indians who were in distress in any part of the world.

“A glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end. India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to public service and bettering lives of the poor. Sushma Swaraj Ji was one of her kind, who was a source of inspiration for crores of people,” he said in a series of tweets.

Asaduddin Owaisi fires on BJP: Lok Sabha debate

0

MIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi asked whether the BJP government at the Centre is wanting to turn India into a China or a Palestine where some sections of people have no rights. He asserted that the Centre has no powers to scrap Article 370 and Article 35A in respect of Kashmir. The MIM will go to court against the Modi government’s unilateral action which didn’t involve the people of Kashmir in the process of reorganization.

Owaisi said that the Court itself had described Article 370 as the instrument of Special Autonomy for Kashmir but Union Home Minister Amit Shah is saying it was of a temporary nature. Owaisi demanded to know whether the Centre could take such drastic action now as the whole issue is sub judice being heard in the court.

Owaisi said that like Kashmir, there are places like Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, etc where outsiders cannot go and buy property freely. Where is the need for a separate treatment to Kashmir alone? Owaisi said that the BJP leaders committed a historic blunder by scrapping Article 370.

Opposition multiple attacks as Jagan goes to Jerusalem

0

The TDP, BJP and Congress have made a combined attack on the YCP government with no ruling party leader giving a befitting reply now. On his part, Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy is touring Jerusalem as a thanksgiving visit for his resounding victory in 2019 elections. All the ruling party leaders are away in their respective places with very little activity taking place in Amaravati Capital City.

At his juncture, Opposition parties mounted multiple attacks. The TDP has alleged that Jagan Reddy has cancelled the previous contract given by TDP regime on Polavaram only to promote his personal interests for developing a private hydel power project at the project site.

BJP MP Sujana Chowdary says that the developments in Andhra are alarming and there are concerns as to what is happening to the state. He took objection to Jagan Circar decision to cancel Navayuga works, saying that once works were given by a previous government cannot be cancelled. Sujana said that if Jagan runs government like this, industrialists will run away from Andhra. Congress leader Tulasi Reddy said that Jagan is acting like a Tughlaq government making all wrong decisions putting Andhra into total jeopardy and a dangerous situation.

Centre shocking reply in Lok Sabha: Polavaram

The Modi government at the Centre has made shocking comments on the reverse tendering being taken up by the Jaganmohan Reddy government on Polavaram project works. Union Water Resources Minister Gajendra Singh Shekawat told Lok Sabha that AP’s action would cause a further increase in overall costs of the project and it would cause delays. Then it would not be possible to say when the project would be completed eventually.

Replying to a query by TDP MP Galla Jayadev, the Union Minister said that the early completion of Polavaram would solely rest on the shoulders of YCP government. It is well known that though it is a national project, the state government was given approval to supervise the project works to ensure its early completion as per the aspirations of the Andhra people. It became necessary as the project was long pending with successive governments delaying it in some pretext or other.

Interestingly, the Union Minister said that he was regretting to announce that the Jagan Reddy government had removed the Navayuga Company which is carrying out the project works currently. Jagan alleged large scale allegations in the project during TDP regime which is why Navayuga was dismissed. But the Centre has been saying there were not such irregularities. The present issue triggered doubts over the Centre’s future support for the Polavaram project works.

Why are YCP MPs not agitating for Special Status?

0

The Modi government at the Centre has not fulfilled Special Status and other major promises to Andhra Pradesh. But it is giving a lot of national-level posts to the ruling YCP MPs and leaders. Ongole MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy was nominated as a member on the Estimates Committee. Rajampeta MP Mithun Reddy was named as a panel speaker. RS MP Vijayasai Reddy was made member on the Mangalagiri AIMS Board. Now, Amalarpuram MP Chinta Anuradha is made a member of the Coconut Board at the national level.

Analysts say that it is nothing double standards on the part of the BJP government at the Centre to give top posts to YCP MPs on the one hand and not fulfilling reorganisation promises to Andhra. The ruling YCP has been demanding Special Status at every available opportunity but it has not taken to the agitational path. If the YCP is really committed to the cause of Andhra Special Status, the party MPs should not have accepted the top posts being offered by the BJP.

Whenever BJP says that Special Status is a closed chapter, YCP leaders keep silent. CM Jaganmohan Reddy just raises the demand for Special Status during his meetings with PM Modi and forgets about the same later. YCP MPs also raise this demand on every available opportunity but they do not agitate for the same. However, they accept any post given by the BJP. Can they agitate for AP demands if they accept such posts?

Krishnam Raju sensational comments: CBN will be arrested soon

1

Rebel star and BJP leader Krishnam Raju made sensational comments on TDP supremo and former CM Chandra Babu Naidu. He commented that, Chandra Babu Naidu will be arrested soon.

He recently came to Bhimavaram to participate in the membership drive of BJP. He commented that in west Godavari alone, 2 lakh voters are going to register into BJP. He also added that many leaders of other parties also planning to join BJP. Then he spoke indirectly about CBN. He told, CBN cheated people by promoting center’s programs as his programs. He opined, Chandra Babu should have maintained cordial relations with center. He added, CBN tried to get sympathy before elections by saying center is planning to arrest him and now his words are coming true soon. Even a small snake should be killed using a big stick, he remarked.

Krishnam Raju’s comments became a topic of debate and people are wondering whether BJP is planning to really arrest CBN to strengthen BJP in state. Some others opine, these BJP leaders are simply making these comments so that their membership drive program gets some publicity in media. We have to wait and see whether there is any truth in Krishhnam Raju’s comments.

TRS may face challenge from BJP in municipal polls

0

After a setback in the recent Lok Sabha polls, Telangana’s ruling TRS is gearing up to bounce back in ensuing elections to urban local bodies but may face a stiff challenge from a spirited opposition, mainly the BJP.

Elections to 132 municipalities are likely to be held next month when the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) will be looking to repeat the performance of Assembly elections held in December 2018 and subsequent panchayat polls.

Buoyed by the massive inroads it made in the Lok Sabha elections by winning four seats, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing to give a tough fight to the TRS.

Trying to project itself as the alternative to the ruling party, BJP is looking to build on its victory in Secunderabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad and Adilabad Lok Sabha constituencies.

BJP retained Secunderabad and wrest three seats from TRS while Congress also came up with good performance to bag three seats. Out of 17 Lok Sabha seats in the state, TRS won nine seats while its ally All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) retained the lone seat. However, the results were a setback for TRS, which was confident of a clean sweep.

TRS, which swept the rural local body elections held last month, is confident of repeating the performance in municipal polls. BJP, however, is hopeful of cashing in on the perceived support among urban voters to bag majority of municipalities.

With BJP going aggressive with its best-ever performance in Lok Sabha polls in Telangana by polling 19 per cent votes, its leaders are confident of the party emerging as an alternative to TRS and storming to power in 2023 elections.

Signalling the significance the party attached to Telangana, party’s national president Amit Shah chose Telangana to launch the membership drive. He asked the party cadre to increase the party’s vote share in the coming elections to 50 per cent.

Though the BJP state leadership had set a membership target of 16 lakh, Shah revised it to 18 lakh. As part of ‘Mission 2023’, Shah plans to visit Telangana every month to strengthen the organisation.

“BJP will contest all the seats in the municipal polls and we are confident that the party will win majority of the seats,” said state BJP chief K. Laxman.

Though the Congress did well in the Lok Sabha polls to win three seats, the party suffered a huge blow after the results with 12 out of its 18 MLAs merging with TRS. The party has also lost the status of main opposition party in the Assembly.

Other opposition parties are also in no mood to join hands with Congress for the municipal elections. The Left parties and Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) plan to contest the polls on their own.

Congress had contested Assembly elections in alliance with Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Communist Party of India (CPI) and TJS. However, TRS retained power, winning 88 seats in the 119-member Assembly. Its ally AIMIM retained seven seats. Congress could secure 19 seats while TDP got two. The BJP got just one seat.

With other opposition parties posing no major threat, the TRS is focusing on BJP, especially in the four Lok Sabha seats that it won.

Leading the party in another poll battle, TRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao is busy holding meetings with the party leaders to work out a strategy to counter BJP.

The ruling party is continuing its aggressive membership drive. It claims to have enrolled 40 lakh members so far and hopes that the total number will go up to 60 lakh in next few days.

Rama Rao, who is son of TRS President and Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, is confident that the welfare schemes being implemented by the government and its focus on addressing people’s problems at local level would once again help it come out with flying colours.
