Breaking: Bollywood heading for a Shut Down again

0

As predicted by the experts, the Omicron variant of coronavirus is creating a havoc in the country. The government of Maharashtra already imposed night curfews and theatres are asked to shutdown from tomorrow. The government of New Delhi issued a Yellow Alert and the movie theatres will operate on odd-even dates. Shahid Kapoor’s upcoming movie Jersey release is now postponed and several new Bollywood films are expected to get postponed.

SS Rajamouli and his team will take the final call on the release of RRR very soon. Maharashtra and New Delhi contribute to the major North Indian market and with the business restrictions in both the states, it would be tough for the biggies to release during the season. Ranveer Singh’s recent offering 83’s theatrical run too will be impacted for sure. Bollywood is heading for one more closure because of the current situations in the country.

Bollywood filmmakers in the hunt for Tollywood projects

1

All the deals for Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam and SS Rajamouli’s RRR are closed. Both these films will have to perform well in Hindi and Telugu languages considering the vast theatrical market. Both these projects are in demand and the deals are closed in advance. There are several pan-Indian projects that are under shoot and the Bollywood filmmakers are in the hunt to acquire the deals for crazy Telugu projects. Karan Johar is backing Vijay Devarakonda’s Liger which is directed by Puri Jagannadh.

Tollywood filmmakers too are in plans to play safe by selling the Hindi theatrical rights. A couple of Bollywood production houses are in talks to acquire the Hindi theatrical rights of Allu Arjun’s film Pushpa. Excel Entertainment will release KGF: Chapter 2 after they made handsome profits through KGF: Chapter 1. Bollywood filmmakers are looking for films featuring young actors and release them in Hindi. If these fare well in the North Indian circuit, both the involved parties can make handsome profits.

After the films of Tollywood actors crossing millions of views on YouTube and doing exceptional on small screen, Telugu films are in demand.

All the movie shoots will happen in a bubble without any movement and the social distancing guidelines should be followed. All the shoots should complete by 5 PM. Will Bollywood biggies follow Radhe?

0

Salman Khan’s recent offering Radhe took up the digital path and released on ZeePlex. The film released on a pay-per-view basis and is streamed for Rs 249 per view. The production house announced that the film received 4.2 million views on day one and the film had a fabulous weekend all over. The response for the film is mixed and several Bollywood filmmakers have been waiting to witness the performance of Radhe on ZeePlex. Zee Studios will calculate the final profit and loss statement after which they will choose the path and release some more projects in the coming months.

Some of the filmmakers are not convinced with the pay per view basis release considering the current situations while some of them are keen to head for a digital release with their movies. Some of them are expecting a whopping amount to close the digital deal instead of pay-per-view basis.

Considering the second wave of coronavirus, it is impossible for the Bollywood biggies to release this year in theatres. But some of them will head for digital release considering the offers. Akshay Kumar’s upcoming movie Bellbottom is the next biggie from Hindi to have a digital release and the film will soon stream on Disney Plus Hotstar.

COVID-19: If shooting stops for 13 days, what happens to B’wood’s lower-rung workers?

0

As per notification issued by Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association, Federation of Western India Cine Employees and other similar bodies, shooting for films, TV shows, digital shows and all other entertainment formats will be stopped between March 19 and 31 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. While filmstars, filmmakers and other celebrities get to spend quality time with their families and also relax for a few days, what happens to the grassroots-level workers of the film industry, who get paid per day? What happens to technicians, spotboys, camera and crane operators, freelance makeup artists or hairstylists?

Unfortunately, the picture is far from rosy for these people, and most of them are already worried. For most of them, one day’s work — which might last upto 16 hours — normally means just a few hundred rupees, and a lot of them are the sole breadwinners of their families. Bollywood shutting down would mean even that paltry income will stop.

Freelance hairstylist Snehal told IANS: “I am a single woman. I stay in a rented apartment and have to bear all my costs. If shoot stops for so many days, how will we survive? I don’t have much savings to last for a long time.”

Snehal, a Mira Road resident, added: “Normally, hairstylists like us get around Rs 2,000 on a daily basis. Most of us get to work for 10 to 15 days a month. That’s how the industry works. If you working a full month — like in TV serials — then you get Rs 1200 daily. If that also stops coming, how will we manage? As it is, there are too many people and too less work and it is not easy to get work. Due to the current situation, even pre-shoot meetings and auditions are getting postponed. If shoots do not start, we won’t get work.”

As per the notification, shooting is expected to stop from March 19. Owing to panic, half of Goregaon’s Film City had already stopped shooting by Tuesday, March 17. Most people declared they were in no mood to take risks. Celebrities as well as junior artistes are routinely absent from pre-scheduled shoots.

Casting coordinator Prince Sheikh revealed: “I am casting for a mythological show right now but I am not getting good response from actors owing to this coronavirus scare. If earlier, a hundred people responded to an ad posted by me, now hardly 10 are turning up.”

Big stars have already started cancelling shoots. Reveals a source: “A couple of days ago, shoot for an advertisement was scheduled with an A-lister actress in Film City. She did not turn up owing to the coronavirus scare, and the entire shoot was cancelled. A celebrity can afford not to turn up, but if a technician, a spotboy, a lightman, a cameraman and a junior artiste does not turn up, they stand to lose their job. Junior artists get paid as less as Rs 300-400 and other workers get Rs 600-700 for working upto 16 hours.”

While shooting scheduled to be stopped for 13 days at a stretch, the lockdown could be extended depending upon circumstances. How will these people manage? Not coronavirus, but the question of running their households is right now the bigger concern for these people Bollywood’s lower-rung professionals.

Bollywood’s tug-of-war over Article 370

0

Bollywood sees a great cinematic tale in the end of Article 370, and that’s making film production houses rush to register titles related to the government’s historic step. But not all will be given the green signal.

The week started with the government altering the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Since then, film producers have been thronging the offices of entertainment bodies like Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA), Producers Guild of India and Indian Film and Television Producers Council (IFTPC) in Mumbai to register titles relating to the abrogation of Article 370.

“Since the time the decision was announced, we are getting five to six applications every day,” Mehul Kumar, senior vice president of the IMPPA, told IANS.

On Monday morning, Home Minister Amit Shah announced in the Rajya Sabha that the government has decided to revoke Article 370 of the Constitution which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The decision also took away with it Article 35A.

Movie business analyst Atul Mohan shared a list of some of the titles submitted for registration.

“Film producers associations are getting flooded with applications to register the following titles for their films: ‘Article 370’, ‘Article 370 Scrapped’, ‘Article 35 A’, ‘Article 370 Abolished’, ‘Article35A Scrapped’, ‘Kashmir Mein Tiranga’, ‘Kashmir Hamara Hai’ and ‘370 Article’,” Mohan tweeted.

The applications will be reviewed by IMPPA for approval during a meeting, expected to be held later this month. Mehul says very few will be granted the title.

“We will take a call during the title registration meeting, and only one or two will be approved. After the Pulwama attacks, we got more than 30-40 title applications, and they were almost the same with just some addition in front or at the back.

“But the story and the incident on which the movie is based will remain the same, irrespective of the title. At that time, we decided that we will approve the one which came in the beginning. The same thing has happened this time with many submitting applications. And we will follow what we followed at the time of Pulwama title registration,” Mehul said.

According to Mehul, Anand Pandit’s production house has applied for titles on both — Article 370 and Article 35A.

“That’s why we are not taking any more applications,” Mehul added.

Bollywood’s attempt to cash in on the topical political events and historical turning point of the nation is not new. At the time of Pulwama attack, producers had lined up to register movie titles with an aim to give a cinematic spin to the real-life incident.

And the success of movies running high on patriotism instills confidence in them to tread the same path. “Kesari”, “Raazi” “Uri: The Surgical Strike” and “Article 15” being testimony to it.

Trade expert Rajesh Thadani feels a movie on the death of Article 370 will be “interesting” because of the India-Pakistan connect with the spotlight on Kashmir.

“And that is the reason everyone wants to register the title and be one up. The producers feel it will make a good story as it is very topical. There have been similar films which have worked well. Everyone wants to capitalise on that and make a film as soon as they can. They are registering all the titles, so that they can start the movie as soon as they have a script,” Thadani told IANS, adding: “They might have started hunting for stars for the movie as well”.

But film and trade expert Girish Johar feels content decides the fate of the film, not title.

“It doesn’t matter what the title of the film is. Audience is very smart — they know what film they want. Whatever the title is, the story has to be good. Blocking the title is just a herd mentality. I don’t see any sense in doing that,” Johar told IANS.

Taking stock: Box office January-June 2019 ( Bollywood)

As the first half of the year 2019 comes to an end, it is that time of the year; the time to take stock of the box office status in general vis a vis the Hindi films and that of each film released during the period individually. There is a superstition about not to release a film on the first Friday of a new year. And, that superstition continues as no major film was released on the first Friday this year, too. It seems, people would like to get the hang of the new year and settle down into it for, somehow, the superstition has proved right and the first Friday as well as the weekend have, as a routine, failed to draw footfalls. May be, not in the mood for a film outing, especially after the New Year revelry which happens to be the event of the year.

What the first six months indicated was that only superstars or big banners don’t matter, a cast had to be backed by content. This fact was proved more so in the second quarter of the year as a few big bill, big banner films fell with a thud.

The first quarter of the year began on a very promising note as the first film of the year, Uri: The Surgical Strike, despite a limited face value, turned out to be among the biggest grossers ever. As per the tradition, the first Friday of the year, January 4, saw no new release. Uri: The Surgical Strike released on January 11 and consolidated its standing at the box office with each passing day.

Uri: The Surgical Strike enjoyed a glorious run to put together Rs 264 crore at the domestic box office. Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi released the same month. The much revered and admired queen was brought alive on screen after a gap of 66 years, the earlier version being Sohrab Modi’s Jhansi Ki Rani in 1953. Most such historical characters have faded from public memory and to venture in to a film on the subject was a risky proposal, especially since it was an out and out woman oriented and dominated film.

Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi got into some controversies initially but held its own eventually to emerge with a respectable box office numbers of Rs 95 crore but needed the income from its other rights like Overseas, streaming (Amazon) etc to recover. Gully Boy, February 14 (Valentine’s Day), a film about a local Mumbai lad wanting to make it big in the world of rappers, came as a change though rap as music is a past fade in India. However, the film centred around the Mumbai slums of Dharavi and, as such, held limited appeal to the viewers across rest of India. It was probably the popularity of the leading pair of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, who enjoy huge following, that saw the film through as it managed to collect Rs 124 crore.

The nationalistic fervour still prevailed and Uri: The Surgical Strike was followed by another story of the glory from the pages of oral history of a bunch of Sikh warriors from the British Era. As most parts of the India were not aware of this chapter in history, the film did its best business in the north. For the rest of the country, what mattered was that it was an Akshay Kumar film. The film collected Rs 165 crore. Luka Chuppi, a romantic comedy released on March 1. A film about friendship and one-upmanship, watching it was a pleasant experience while it lasted. A moderately priced film, the film was a success with a business of about Rs 94 crore.

Badla, a very limited budget film, that also released in March scored big compared to its cost. This Amitabh Bachchan-Taapsee Pannu starrer made as much as Rs 98 crore at the box office. The other film expected to do well was Total Dhamaal, a film with a reasonable face value and typical director Indrakumar Irani flavour (some double meaning dialogue and titillation). The deterrent factor at the box office was the budget of the film for the kind of content it packed as well as the audience it targeted. The Indian theatrical business remained way short at Rs 152 crore as the film trudged along to get across its recovery line.

This quarter had its share of some films with political themes. The Accidental Prime Minister on the tenure of erstwhile Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, based on Sanjaya Baru’s book of the same name, generated a lot of media attention but did not amount to much at the box office. Thackeray, a film made with the sole purpose of glorifying the life and times of the Maratha leader, Balasaheb Thackeray before the Lok Sabha elections followed soon after. Thackeray being a local Mumbai and Maharashtra leader, the film could not make a mark in rest of the country while doing fairly well locally in its Marathi version.

The film which created most controversy while in the making as well as for its censor certificate and the release, which was, eventually, stalled by the Election Commission, and could not be released as planned before the general elections, proved to be a lot of air and no substance. The casting was unimaginative and, its release post elections, may have been a boon for those concerned. The film, when released post general elections, proved to be a dud.

The second quarter of the year was almost disastrous as disappointments followed in some major films till, at the very end of the quarter, came Shahid Kapoor starrer, Kabir Singh, a remake of the Telugu hit, Arjun Reddy.

While the period saw some attempts at making films on politically or socially relevant subjects, almost all such films went unnoticed except for one, The Tashkent Files, released in April. The film attracted much media and some discerning audience, too.

Romeo Akbar Walter was the first release of the second quarter and furthered the fancy of John Abraham of playing a cop or a spy or some sort of a national hero and so on. Nothing much came of it. Kalank, with a most inappropriate title and a theme to match, coming from the house of Dharma Productions, released mid-April. It was not palatable to the people. The presence of Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Madhuri Dixit could not salvage the film. The production house followed the failure of Kalank with another dud, Student Of The Year 2, an attempt to cash in on the banner’s earlier success, Student Of The Year, from 2012. A veteran of almost half a dozen films, Tiger Shroff, could not pass off as a student and nor could the content, inspired from previous hit movie.

The month of May saw the release of another Ajay Devgn film, De De Pyar De, a kind of contemporary adult love triangle with a concocted script. Most grown up actors have given some flops to realise that they are past playing lovers. Devgn films have a limited box office potential not in keeping with the costs. Same happened with De De Pyar De, too. The film has collected Rs 92 crore.

With the coming of Eid and Salman Khan combination in the first week of May, hopes were high from both, the audience as well as the exhibitors. A blockbuster was awaited and expected with Bharat. As it turned out, there was nothing Bharat – like in the film. A young boy who travels to India post partition with nothing dramatic or entertaining accounts for most of the film’s running time with Salman Khan embarking on sort of his own version of Discovery Of India! At a little short of the Rs 200 crore mark at the box office to date, the film falls much short of its recovery mark.

Just when the second quarter of the year seemed to be ending on a disastrous note, came this surprise pack in the form of Shahid Kapoor starrer, Kabir Singh, a remake of Arjun Reddy (Telugu). The film had its detractors but, as they say in the film industry, ‘Figures Speak For Themselves’ and, in the case of Kabir Singh, the figures seem to speak louder than the voices of all its detractors put together. The film established itself as a hit by day three becoming one of the biggest openers of its time and the biggest one in the career of Shahid Kapoor in his 16-year career.

To sum up the January-June 2019 period, while the first quarter with no major, high budget release, the period accounted for a box office of Rs 1,150 crore against which, the second quarter, with some high cost big banner films, could account for just Rs 650 crore (figures of Kabir Singh not added) at the box office. The last full year, the turnover was Rs 3,300 crore (and these sums include the share of cinema halls).

@The Box Office
The top slots are vacant as the superstars are seen to be making exits. And, most of them seem to have stayed longer than best before dates. The slots are ready to be filled. Shahid Kapoor, who has been lurking on the sidelines for over one-and-half decade, lacked nothing: great looks, ample talent, excellent dancer and good at action; he graduated to action movies from romantic kinds he started with.

* Finally, Shahid Kapoor draws the footfalls the kind superstars do with his latest release, Kabir Singh. The film takes impressive opening day of about Rs 20 crore as the figures take huge leaps over Saturday and Sunday to give the film an opening weekend of over Rs 70 crore. Any other film would be expected to take a dip as the new working week began but not Kabir Singh as it went on to add another Rs 63 crore, almost as much as the opening weekend, to close its first week with a huge Rs 133 crore.
*Bharat has been braving speed breakers soon after its Eid day opening collections as the figures went on falling drastically in the following days. At the end of its third week, the film accounts for a box office of Rs 198 crore.

Karan Johar to introduce Sridevi’s second daughter into Bollywood?

0

Is Karan Johar planning to introduce Sridevi’s second daughter into Bollywood? Karan Johar’s statements in a recent TV show seem to be giving the indications on this.

In Neha Dhupia’s chat show ‘No filter Neha’, Karan Johar was asked about the debuts we might see in 2019. For this, Karan replied that Javed Jaffrey’s son Mizaan and Sridevi’s daughter Khushi Kapoor will be debuting in 2019. He showered praises on both of them and told, “Mizaan is going to be amazing, he is a potential big star and a great dancer and Khushi perhaps is gorgeous and lovely.”

However, after Karan’s statements, speculations started whether Karan himself will be introducing these two to bollywood. Earlier, he has introduced many star kids like Alia bhat, Chunki Pandey’s daughter Ananya Pande, Saif Ali Khan’s daugher Sara Ali Khan to bollywood. So, people are discussing whether Karan has plans to introduce these two. There are already rumors about Sanjay Leela Bhansali introducing Mizaan but no news about Khushi Kapoor’s debut yet.

We will have to wait and see how true are these speculations

Shah Rukh Khan clocks 25 years in Bollywood

0

He came, he dimpled and he conquered. Twenty-five years after Shah Rukh Khan first smiled upon Bollywood, he is still grinning.

And he has every reason to. Khan, one of the richest actors in the Hindi film industry, is still going strong as a hero, a quarter of a century after he emerged as a celluloid lover boy in 1992.

The 51-year-old actor, whose fans are all ready for his new venture, Imtiaz Ali’s “Jab Harry Met Sejal”, made his Bollywood debut with “Deewana”, where he played the role of a young man called Raja in love with Divya Bharti’s character of Kajal.

After a spate of hits and misses, and some eminently forgettable films in recent years, SRK is now busy promoting the new project, starring Anushka Sharma. Three mini-trailers of the film, slated to be released in August, have been launched.

What is known so far about the film is that Sharma Sejal – is a Gujarati tourist, who has lost a ring, and SRK, aka Harry, is a tourist guide.

What is also known is the word “intercourse” figures in it. Censor chief Pahlaj Nihalani wants the word to be snipped off, unless one lakh people write to him in support of it.

King Khan has not reacted to Nihalani’s remark, but posted a tweet about his silver jubilee early on Sunday.

“Went to bed early because it has been a hectic week.

Woke up for no reason and realised I am 25 years old. Will deal with all this love tomorrow. Thanks for bearing me,” he tweeted.

His frequent collaborator and friend, filmmaker Karan Johar, congratulated him for the silver jubilee.

“Have had the honour of working with him for 22 of those 25 years…. Love you so much Bhai… And thank you for everything,” Johar tweeted.

The hero of films such as “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”, “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham,” “Devdas”, “Swades”, “Chak De! India” and “My Name Is Khan”, earned USD 38 million in the year 2016-17, according to Forbes.
