Train derails in Chennai, no casualty reported

0

A suburban train from Chennai’s Moor Market to Tiruvallur derailed at Tamil Nadu’s Vyasarpadi railway station on Sunday, officials said, adding that no one was injured in the incident.

The derailment occurred when the train was passing through the Basin Bridge and Vyasarpadi railway station.

Southern Railway sources told IANS that the second coach of the electrical multiple unit derailed.

Staff of Chennai central station rushed to the spot and engaged in restoration of the track and the coach. Several people alighted from the train and walked out of the station to the nearest bus station.

Sources in Southern Railway told IANS that after derailment, the train services from Tiruvallur and Avadi stretch were stopped for a couple of hours. A few trains were stopped at Perambur and Villikvakkam stations as well.

This is the third derailment of a train in a week. An empty coach of Jan Shatabdi train derailed near Basin Bridge on June 9 as the train was taken to the yard for cleaning.

On June 8, the fourth coach of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway train, from Mettupalayam to Conoor, derailed. However, no one was injured in the incident.

Modi’s take on media

0

At a time when fake news is flooding the media and the people are unable to discern what is real and unreal in the coverage of news and dissemination of knowledge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for credibility needs heed.

Speaking at the 75th anniversary celebrations of Tamil newspaper Daily Thanthi in Chennai on Monday, Modi stressed the importance of language newspapers in reaching out to different sections of people and the need for credibility as people tend to crosscheck what’s shown on the TV and written in newspapers and draw their own conclusions. In other words, what he means is in a multimedia culture, a single source of information has no place. At the same time, he also wanted healthy competition among credible media platforms.

Dwelling at length on editorial freedom, the Prime Minister said it should be used wisely in public interest. Invoking Mahatma Gandhi, Modi said: “Press is called the Fourth Estate. It is definitely a power, but to misuse that power is criminal.”

Giving a piece of his mind on the content, Modi wanted the media to shift its focus from politics-centric coverage to non-political and developmental news that affects a majority of population in the country.

One wonders how a media-shy prime minister has suddenly become media-savvy.

Kamal Haasan warns of flood threat in north Chennai

0

Actor Kamal Haasan on Friday voiced his concern on the environmental impact due to the dumping of the ash waste by power plants in river Kosasthalaiyar and also warned about possible flooding of north Chennai.

In a series of tweets, Haasan said that the Vallur Thermal Plant and North Chennai Thermal Plant are dumping their ash waste in the river, and cited expert opinion to warn that north Chennai would get flooded even during normal rains.

He also noted that the forecast now is more than normal rainfall which, in turn, puts at risk 10 lakh people in that area.

The actor said a good government should find a permanent solution for the problems faced by the people.

Haasan also warned the government and the people that it would be dangerous for Chennai if the Ennore Creek is ignored.

According to him, the government did not look at the issue when the environmentalists took up the issue of dumping of waste by the power plants, or when the local people also joined them.

In addition, Haasan alleged that Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum have built their facilities in the river.

The actor also said he is hearing about attempts to encroach upon 1,000 acres under the guise of expansion of Kamarajar Port in Ennore, near here.

Chennai to Kazipet in 3 hrs by train? Feasibility study soon

0

The Indian Railways signed a declaration of intent with Germany today to carry out a feasibility study on the Chennai-Kazipet corridor to increase the speed of passenger trains to 200 kmph, officials said.

At present, the travel time between Chennai and Kazipet in Telengana, a distance of around 643 kms, is around 11 hours. If the semi-high speed corridor is developed, then it will take about 3 hours 15 minutes.

The project will be carried out in three phases over a 22-month period.

The cost of the feasibility study will be equally shared by the Ministry of Railways and Germany.

Once the feasibility study is done, the Railway Board will decide if a semi-high speed train can be run on this corridor, the officials said.

The increase in speed of the corridor will significantly help commuters as there is only one direct train from Kazipet to Chennai — the Charminar SF Express — which takes 11 hours 20 minutes with 13 stoppages at an average speed of 57 kmph.

The maximum sectional speed on the corridor is 110 kmph in Southern Railway and 120 kmph for South Central Railway.
