Congress begins receiving applications from aspirants

0

The AP Congress on Wednesday started receiving applications from the aspirants for the Assembly and Parliament elections. The party opened a counter in Andhra Rathna Bhavan, the State Congress headquarters here.

Party senior leader and AICC secretary Manickam Tagore started receiving the applications from the aspirants. The first application was given by Sudhkar from Madakasira Assembly constituency, while the second application was given by Mastan Vali from Guntur East Assembly constituency. The third application was given by Kamalamma from Badwel Assembly constituency.

Speaking on the occasion, Manickam Tagore said that every Congress worker has the right to give his or her application for the elections. He also wanted the Congress loyalists to come back to the party and fight the elections. He wanted the YSR loyalists to come back and fight the elections on the Congress ticket.

He said that the party steering Committee in Delhi would look into all the applications and allocate the party tickets for both Assembly and Parliament seats. He said that the Congress would contest all the 175 Assembly seats and 25 Parliament seats in the state.

Manickam Tagore said that the Congress is gaining ground in the state. Congress workers from different parties were now looking at the party for their future politics. He also said that leaders from the ruling YSR Congress were now looking at the Congress and maintained that it was a good sign.

Referring to Mangalagiri MLA Alla Ramakrishna Reddy’s seat, the AICC secretary said that the issue would be decided shortly by the party high command. He said that the high command is looking into the issue and would soon declare Ramakrishna Reddy’s constituency.

Manickam Tagore also maintained that there are several MLAs from the YSR Congress who are coming to the Congress. So far, Ramakrishna Reddy and Kapu Ramachandra Reddy have come to the party and more leaders would join shortly.

Is Sharmila merging her party with Congress?

0

There is a talk in the political circles that YSR Telangana Party president Y S Sharmila is joining the Congress Party in Telangana. She is all set to merge her party with the Congress and join the party.

Sources say that initial talks for the merger were completed and both sides are working on the modalities.

All this is going to happen in the near future and is not ruled out if one goes by the tweets and Sharmila is posting on her twitter handle. She had thanked Congress former president Rahul Gandhi for remembering late Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy.

Rahul Gandhi took to his twitter handle to wish Rajasekhar Reddy on his birth anniversary. Rahul said that YSR will be remembered forever by the people for his welfare governance.

But what one wonders is where did Rahul Gandhi go for all these years without even remembering Dr Rajasekhar Reddy. Where did Rahul Gandhi go when YSR family members were dragged on to the streets after his death in 2009?

In politics there are no permanent friends and foes. This too is the same and Rahul Gandhi and Sharmila are no enemies, but turning into good friends. For Rahul Gandhi too, the YSR family or even late YSR are close to his heart, for political gains.

Thirteen years after his death, YSR is seen as a potential trump card for the Congress in Telangana. The Congress which ignored YSR immediately after his death in 2009 is now finding a source of strength in his name now.

While Congress finds a vote bank in the name of Dr YSR, Sharmila finds a great leader in Rahul Gandhi! That is what is all about politics!

Prashant Kishore declines Congress offer

2

Prashant Kishore, the country most sought after political strategists announced on social media that he declined the offer given by Congress to join the party. Details as follows.

Prashant Kishore played instrumental role in bringing BJP into power in 2014 general elections and in bringing YSRCP into power in 2019 AP elections. In recent times there have been several attempts to bring PK as strategist to Congress party. Earlier attempts were foiled as Rahul Gandhi and PK got some creative differences about the approach to be followed. Later Priyanka Gandhi and co had resumed discussions with PK and convinced congress bigwigs to have PK as the main strategist for the party. However, Congress leaders asked PK to join the party officially. PK responded on this today. He wants to confine his role as strategist of the party rather than to expand it to become a political leader.

Prashant Kishore tweeted that “ I declined the generous offer of #congress to join the party as part of the EAG & take responsibility for the elections.

In my humble opinion, more than me the party needs leadership and collective will to fix the deep rooted structural problems through transformational reforms.”

We need to wait and see whether PK will be able to restore the prospects of grand old party in the upcoming elections.

Why everyone is rushing to Neelakanthapuram?

0

He was once the most powerful politician from Rayalaseema and was considered close to YSR. After YSR’s death, he was in the reckoning for the CM’s post. He was the president of the Congress Party after the state was bifurcated and held the party together during the troubled times.

Cut to the present! He has kept away from politics and is busy with farm work and temple renovation. He has not stirred out of his native village in the past two years and looks every inch a rustic rural farmer. He loves to travel on a moped or pillion ride on someone else’s bike. Yes. We are talking of N Raghuveera Reddy, who has seen the ebbs and tides in politics.

Though he has shunned politics, politics it appears, is refusing to leave him. Of late, leaders from various political parties are coming down to his village Neelakanthapuram and are holding parleys with him. Recently, TDP leader JC Prabhakar Reddy met him. People from the YSRCP too are meeting him regularly. Meanwhile, there are reports that the Congress high command is also in touch with him. Sources say that the AICC has asked him to come to Delhi for consultations on the state of the Congress Party.

Sources also say that Raghuveera is busy with homams and other rituals till August 15 in the village temples that he has renovated. So, he is likely to go to Delhi to meet Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. If all goes well, Raghuveera is likely to become active in politics again.

Whither Rahul Gandhi’s Minimum Income Guarantee Scheme

0

Congress president Rahul Gandhi announced a Universal Basic Income scheme that will provide minimum income support of Rs 72,0000 annually to impoverished Indian families earning less than Rs 12,000 per month. The scheme will be made available to 20 per cent of India’s most poor families. The party expects it to be a game changer in its efforts to stall Modi’s juggernaut. The programme would benefit 250 million of a population of 1.3 billion. The Congress president calls it a final assault on poverty. Thus, Rahul Gandhi unveils Garibi Hatao 2.0.

“In the past five years, people had to suffer a lot. Congress wants to give justice to the poor and eradicate poverty,” Rahul said, adding that “such a well-thought scheme has not been launched by anyone in the world.”
In fact, the Economic Survey of Modi government in 2016 considered Universal Basic Income Scheme (UBI) an alternative to a host of anti-poverty and social welfare schemes being implemented by central and state governments. Rahul Gandhi said that such a scheme has never been implemented anywhere in the world. But, it’s nothing but another name for the much debated and much disputed Direct Cash Transfers scheme.

In Switzerland, a referendum on June 2016 on UBI for the country had seen an overwhelming 77 per cent of the voters rejecting this. The NITI Aayog has already said India does not have necessary financial resources for the project. But, if the government really wants it can certainly find finances to implement it. Rahul Gandhi’s minimum guarantee scheme requires 3.6 lakh crores. This is around 13 per cent of the central government budget. In fact, the government of India loses revenue to the tune of 6 lakh crores due to myriad tax concessions.

Will the UBI be an alternative or another add-on to existing social welfare schemes, this is the moot question.
If UBI does away with PDS and MGNREGS, it would affect food security and further deepen farmers’ distress.
The other alternatives suggested is, to begin with implementing a universal basic pension and a decent minimum wage for all working people. Before embarking upon such ideational shifts in welfare policies, the government should author an economic policy regime that addresses the problem of humongous income inequalities.

The advocates of such schemes argue that there are leakages in the implementation of welfare schemes and therefore giving cash directly to the poor is a better idea. But, the paradigm shift away from the conventional approach to welfare is not without its share of implementation problems. If it’s truly a basic income to meet the basic needs of the people, it would entail a massive financial requirement. This requires massive taxation. Such indiscriminate high taxation can have negative consequences for the economy too. The basic income, when transferred in the form of cash, would be subject to constant devaluation due to inflation.

The cash transfers thus turn the Universal Basic Income into neither universal nor basic but a prescribed income for the targeted, whose value would see depreciation. Instead, the government should author a robust public policy regime that guarantees universal basic needs like education, health, nutrition, sanitation, drinking water etc. Any rollback of the public distribution system, mid-day meals, jobs scheme etc., would further erode India’s human development status.

Jayareddy becomes star campaigner

0

Ms. Toorpu Jayareddy. No one knows this name a month before. But, she has become star campaigner from Congress Party in Sangareddy assembly segment. She is campaigning on behalf of her father. She is daughter of Congress senior leader Mr. Toorpu Jayaprakash Reddy alias Jaggareddy, who was arrested recently by Hyderabad north zone police in connection with human trafficking and fake passport cases, took place in 2004 and came into light recently to the knowledge of police.

Following her father’s arrest, Ms. Jayareddy took responsibilities of campaign in the constituency and roaming around colonies and activating the cadre of Jaggareddy. Though Mr. Jaggareddy came back on bail from Chanchalguda jail, she along with her mother Ms. Nirmala is continuing the campaign as Jaggareddy fell sick. Jaggareddy is staying in Hyderabad based on the instructions given by the doctors as well as he has to attend before police in the case.

Ms. Jayareddy recently completed her bachelor Degree in Business Management. Initially, Jaggareddy wanted his wife Nirmala Reddy, who is Congress Party’s women wing president for undivided Medak District, but, allowed his daughter as she was very interested in supporting her father and criticising the TRS government for its failures. Being a business management graduate, Jayareddy is getting success in attracting both the mass and the class voters with her speeches with confidence.

There are few similarities between Jaggareddy and Jayareddy that are delivering speeches and criticising ruling party and they both born on July 7.

Pawan Kalyan urges southern parties to unitedly fight bias

Leading Telugu actor and Jana Sena party chief Pawan Kalyan on Thursday urged all south Indian political parties to join hands and fight what he said was the biased attitude of north Indian leadership.

He launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its former MP Tarun Vijay’s remarks about the skin colour of south Indians.

In a series of tweets, the actor-politician said the parties of south India should come on a common platform to get a better deal from the central government for their respective states and to fight the bias towards the region.

He agreed with CPI leader K. Narayana’s statement that in Tarun Vijay’s remarks, he saw a BJP agenda to bring about a south-north divide.

“Tarun Vijay’s demeaning racial remarks towards south Indians is a fine example of how the snobbish north Indian elites and political classes view our ‘Dravida Bharatha’ and its people,” he tweeted.

“To BJP leadership and to Tarun Vijay: We are in ‘Down South’ and we are foundation of this Nation, not your ‘Up North’ political leadership foot stand.”

Pawan also slammed the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), saying it had no right to compromise on the promised special category status with the Centre as the people of Andhra Pradesh brought TDP and BJP into power, trusting they would accord special category status to the state.

He urged the TDP not to mortgage the self-respect of the people of Andhra Pradesh for personal benefits.

The actor tweeted that it was quite disheartening to see central minister and TDP leader Ashok Gajapati Raju’s silence and absence of TDP MPs in Parliament when the discussion on special status to Andhra Pradesh came up.

“I think TDP MPs have forgotten the insult of their MPs getting beaten by North MPs in the parliament during the state bifurcation,” he remarked.

“Attitude of our political class (in Delhi). You put us down by our skin colour, we are ok, you mock at us by speaking in our Dravida tongue, we are ok; in Parliament you kick us, abuse us and divide us, we are ok. And we are ok to be slavish and subservient at the cost of our people’s self-respect as long as you do not deny us our contracts, business opportunities, bailing us out from our scams and wrongdoings.”

Pawan praised Yuvajana, Shramika, Rythu (YSR) Congress Party, saying its MPs were doing a commendable job in pursuing the special status issue with the Centre.

The actor, who campaigned for BJP-TDP alliance in the 2014 election, last year distanced himself from the coalition after the Centre refused to accord special status to Andhra Pradesh. He had since been targeting both the parties.

Last month, he announced that Jana Sena will contest 2019 the elections in both the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Sonia’s term as AICC president extended

0

Today, amid speculation that Congress president Sonia Gandhi would step down and Rahul Gandhi would be anointed as AICC president, Congress Working Committee extended her term by one year. The Congress is in celebratory mood over its success in the rolling back of the controversial Land Acquisiton bill by Modi’s NDA government. The following is the text of her speech in CWC meeting held at 10, Jan Path, New Delhi.

Dr. Manmohan Singh ji,
Rahul ji,
Colleagues and Friends,

I welcome you to this meeting of the Congress Working Committee. We last convened barely two weeks after the Modi Government had first promulgated its draconian Land Ordinance. For reasons best known to it, the Modi-Government chose to disregard the will of Parliament and displayed an inexplicable hurry to snatch lands from our farmers.

Thanks to our Party’s sustained campaign, the government has been compelled to withdraw its anti-farmer amendments. The credit for this goes to every worker of the Congress Party, who under Rahul’s active guidance, carried out a sustained agitation. I should make a mention of all like- minded political parties and all members of civil society who joined hands with us in this fight. It goes without saying that lakhs of farmers across the country tirelessly demonstrated and agitated against this Ordinance. Even today they are under great distress because of excess rain or drought conditions, yet no adequate relief has reached them thanks to the Modi-government’s insensitivity to their plight.

Similar campaigns will now need to be mounted against the assault on tribal welfare, onwomen and child welfare, on labour laws, on laws that protect the environment and forests, on RTI and on our flagship initiatives MGNREGA which are being systematically undermined.

The U-turn on the Land Ordinance is evidence that the government is out of touch with ground realities. It has become painfully clear that most of the pledges made by the Prime Minister during his election campaign were nothing more thanhawa baazi. The Modi Government has failed abysmally to match words with deeds, to match media events with actual accomplishments, to match headlines with substance. The economy is on a downward slide while prices continue on their unrelenting rise. As for promises such as the creation of jobs or slogans such as Make in India, the less said about them the better. The autonomy and integrity of vital institutionswhich have stood the country in good stead are being systematically eroded. Writers and progressive thinkers are being physically eliminated. The media is being threatened with notices and other repressive measures. History is sought to be rewritten with special targetting of Jawaharlal Nehru, the architect of modern India and builder of democratic institutions.

This should hardly come as a surprise to us. The country last week was given clear evidence of what has been obvious for a long time—that the Modi government is controlled and directed by the RSS, whose agenda is well known to all of us. The security situation in our neighbourhood has deteriorated considerably. Our jawans and civilians are being increasingly targeted. Instead of a coherent policy on Pakistan , this government can’t seem to make up its mind on what it should do. From aggressively mocking Dr. Manmohan Singh and his policy during the election campaign, the Prime Minister has been reduced to unedifying flip-flops casting doubts on what he really stands for.

The Congress party has always been and will be accountable to party workers and to the people of India. And today we have gathered to deliberate on another important agenda. Our priority must be to strengthen our existing support base and actively reach out and win the confidence of new constituents.

To successfully implement these initiatives we will need to bolster organisational institutions right from the grassroots level. The party unit which is closest to the people, the Block Committees and Booth Committees, must be sufficiently empowered. As we are embarking on registering new members, we have to ensure that our internal processes and systems are sufficiently robust to recognize, reward and nurture talent. A transparent mechanism to recognize and reward hard working and performing workers should be institutionalized. As a party we have always championed the rights of the marginalized sections of society such as women, adivasis, dalits, minorities and OBCs. It is onlythrough affirmative action that we will guarantee greater say in the working of our party to these sections of society.

The proposed amendments to our Constitution, which have been circulated to you, were first presented to this committee on 13th January 2015. They were a result of extensive deliberations guided by the Vice President. I believe these proposals reflect the opinion of a large number of party workers and are built upon our continued commitment to inclusion and empowerment. These amendments will require some time to be implemented, but once done they shall go a long way in making our party institutions truly responsive and equip it to face the challenges that lie ahead.

Let us now proceed with the Agenda.

High-spirited Cong finalizing ‘Warangal Strategy’

0

Enthused by aggressive movements of Telangana Congress , AICC high command is deputing AICC general secretary, in charge of Telugu States, Digvijya Singh to Hyderabad on August 31 to discuss the party strategy for Warangal polls with the state leaders.

With TDP caught up in cash-for-vote scam, and BJP with limited presence in the state, the field is left open for Congress. This is even attracting the leaders who once left the party. Turpu Jayaprakash Reddy, former MLA from Sangareddy former and staunch critic of chief minister K Chadrasekhar Rao is all set to join Congress in the presence of Digvijay Singh.

Digvijay is coming to formulate election strategy for Warangal bypolls, party sources said. The Congress, which is in a jolly combative mood, wants to make the home-coming of Jayaprakash Reddy aka Jagga Reddy a spectacular event to demonstrate to the world that Congress has not lost its sheen.

Jagga Reddy got elected to Assembly on Congress ticket in 2009. But, before 2014 elections, he joined BJP and lost the election. Now he sees no future for BJP in Telagnana. Digvijay, in a glittering ceremony in Gandhi Bhavan, would invite Jagga Reddy into the party fold. The AICC points man is also expected to visit Warangal and would discuss the Rahul Gandhi’s tour to Osmania university.
