You have no respect for courts: HC to KCR govt over Covid-19

The Telangana High Court once again fumed at the KCR government for its failure to put all the facts before it on the COVID-19 situation in the state and the steps initiated to combat the pandemic.

Hearing a batch of petitions, the High Court on Monday pulled up the government for dishonouring its orders since June 8. The court expressed deep anguish and displeasure over the government’s irresponsible and reckless attitude in not disclosing and placing the facts before it.

The court observed that since June 8 the state government has consistently disobeyed its orders on giving information on the availability of beds, ventilators, oxygen facilities in the government and private COVID-19 designated hospitals.

The court also observed that the government lacked transparency in releasing medical health bulletins. The court observed that the government lacked transparency in releasing Covid-19 bulletins. It asked the AG if the government was fudging Covid-19 figures.

The court also noted that the government has little respect for the judiciary. Despite its orders since June 8, the government had failed to implement the same. The court had earlier directed the state chief secretary and principal secretaries of the medical, health and municipal administration departments to appear before it on July 28.

The court questioned AG B S Prasad to submit a counter-affidavit on why the government had failed to implement a series of its orders, including release of Covid-19 bulletins, lack of medical gear for the frontline warriors and low testing.

The court had directed the government to inform the court as to how many PPE kits, N-95 masks and gloves were so far given to the doctors, nurses and paramedical staff involved in treating Coronavirus-affected people.

The court had also questioned the state government on how many tests were conducted and how many samples were taken during a month’s period between May 23 to June 23.

The court also sought a report from the government on the measures being initiated in Hyderabad where the number of containment zones is high. The court had directed the government to submit a report on the testing facilities and the gamut of measures the government had initiated to contain the spread of the virus in the state.

Naidu holds Zoom conference with frontline warriors on Covid-19

1

With Andhra Pradesh grappling with coronavirus, former chief minister and TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu held a video-conference with frontline warriors in Andhra Pradesh over the Covid-19 situation in the state and the measures to be initiated to combat the pandemic.

In the video conferencing via Zoom app, Naidu expressed serious concern over the alarming rise in the Covid-19 cases in the state. He said the government has failed to take the warnings early on.

In the last two weeks, Andhra Pradesh has emerged as one of the biggest Covid-19 hotspots in the country, he stated. “Andhra Pradesh now has the fifth highest number of cases and the fastest growth in cases for any major state in the country. In a worrying trend, the death rate is also on the rise. Every second, a person is succumbing to Covid-19. The recovery rate is also low in Andhra Pradesh. I have warned and cautioned even before the outbreak of the pandemic in the state that Covid-19 could pose an unprecedented disaster,” Naidu stated.

Wit more than 80,000 positive cases, Andhra Pradesh is only behind four other states, including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Karnataka in the highest number of Covid-19 positive cases. Andhra Pradesh is inching closer to outdo Karnataka to claim the third spot in the highest number of Covid-19 cases. Currently, Andhra Pradesh registered 80,858 Covid-19 cases, while Karnataka reported 85,870 cases. With Andhra Pradesh reporting 6000-8000 cases each day, AP is not far claiming the dubious third position from Karnataka.

Naidu said people in Andhra Pradesh are looking with suspicion at the state’s efforts to battle the Covid-19 disease, creating complications for health authorities to grapple with reports of lack of hygiene and supply of sub-standard food to patients. In his video-conference, Naidu said there can be no compromise in the treatment of COVID-19 patients. The former chief minister said the only way to contain the spread of the virus is three T’s – Testing, Testing and Testing.

While lauding the efforts of frontline warriors, mainly doctors, nurses, paramedical and sanitisation workers in combating the pandemic, Naidu said the government should take a pre-emptive, pro-active and graded response in fighting the worst human crisis ever.

“Early tracing and detection is the only way to fight this medical health crisis. “The trust in public health care is low. It is so abysmally low that people are trying to avoid the public health care system. This is not only unfortunate but is proving to be catastrophic in an health emergency situation Covid-19,” Naidu pointed out. The TDP president said this weakened public health infrastructure has placed Andhra Pradesh on a weak footing in combating Covid-19.

Naidu also stated that there is no clarity in the guidelines or Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in dealing with those who succumbed to Covid-19. Naidu said there should be SOPs in disposal of bodies, transportation of the dead from the hospital to the burial ground and disposal of bodies in case of unclaimed ones. Further, the former chief minister also underlined the need to evolve Standard Operating Procedures in sanitization of ambulances ferrying Covid patients. “Keeping ambulances clean and sanitized should be a top priority. Ambulances should be equipped with adequate personal protection gears,” he said.

Covid-19 situation scary in AP: 8,147 cases, 49 deaths

1

Andhra Pradesh is fast emerging as one of the top hotspots for Covid-19 infections in the country. The cases have been rapidly increasing in the last two weeks exposing the Andhra Pradesh government’s failure in handling the pandemic ever since the outbreak in the state.

Andhra Pradesh has remained the biggest contributor of Coronavirus cases for the last two weeks surpassing states like Karnataka, Kerala and Telangana in the South in a single-day surge. In Southern States, Andhra Pradesh is continuing to drive India’s novel Coronavirus numbers which have been touching new highs every day for the last five days.

On Friday, the state registered a record single-day jump of 8,147 new Covid-19 cases taking the state’s overall tally to 80,858. This is the biggest single-day jump in infections so far after its previous single-day high of 7,998 fresh Covid-19 cases. In the last 24 hours, 49 Covid-19 patients succumbed to the infection taking the total number of fatalities to 933. This is the second straight week that Andhra Pradesh has reported the biggest one-day rise in the number of infections and also an increasing death rate. Andhra Pradesh has been showing an unusually high rise in its daily cases, reporting more than 6,000-7000 new infections.

For the second straight day, East Godavari district reported the highest number of Covid-19 infections. On Friday, the district registered 1,029, cases taking its overall virus tally to 11,067. On Thursday, East Godavari reported around 14 Covid-19 deaths while 1,391 positive cases were reported in the last 24 hours in the district.

Among the 49 deaths, East Godavari reported the highest fatalities (11) followed by Krishna (6), Srikakulam (9), Kurnool (8), Srikakulam (5), West Godavari (5), Guntur (3), Vizag (3), Chittoor (1), Prakasam (1), Vizianagaram (1). The total number of Covid-19 patients who succumbed to the infection swelled to 933.

There are 39,990 active cases in the state and the number of recoveries reached 39,935, including 2,380 discharges in the last 24 hours.

TDP state-wide protests against Govt Covid ‘negligence’

0

The Telugu Desam Party leaders and cadres duly followed Coronavirus guidelines and physical distance while taking part in the ongoing state-wide agitation on Friday. They protested against the lack of proper facilities at the Covid isolation centres opened by the government in the state. In response to a call by former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, the TDP’s incharges, people’s representatives, senior leaders and cadres observed the protests on the third day today. The agitators held digital placards demanding the YSRCP government to give up its negligent attitude and come to the rescue of the people.

The leaders observed these protests from their respective residences in all 25 parliamentary constituencies consisting of 175 assembly segments. An awareness drive was also launched on social media against the Government’s ‘failures’ to provide timely and adequate medical care to the Coronavirus patients.

The TDP leaders urged the government to rescue the poor families by providing Rs. 5,000 Covid cash assistance without wasting further time. The poor workers were suffering greatly due to loss of work opportunities and rising prices. The construction workers, coolies, weavers, tailors, artisans and unorganised workers were in deep distress ever since the outbreak. The journalists and media persons should be included in the list of frontline warriors to extend the respective benefits on a par with doctors, medical staff and police. At least Rs. 10 ex gratia should be extended to the kin of the victims of the virus attack.

The other demands of the TDP included supply of required oxygen and medicines to the patients at the government Covid isolation treatment centres. The problem of shortage of doctors and medical staff should also be resolved. Proper ambulance services should be provided to the needy patients. Proper, eatable food should be provided at the quarantine centres. The quality of drinking water and sanitation would have to be enhanced. The government promise should be fulfilled by giving Rs. 2,000 to each patient upon discharge from the isolation centres.

Stating that frontline workers were risking their lives, the TDP said at least Rs. 50 lakh ex gratia should be paid to each family towards the death doctors, nurses, medical staff, police, sanitation staff and others in the line of duty.

Alarmingly, Andhra Pradesh was standing first in the entire country in the daily death toll and in third place in active Coronavirus cases. The state was standing in the lowest place in recovery rate. It was unfortunate that uneatable burnt chapatis, dried up idlis, watery sambar and stench smelling curries were being provided at the treatment centres. While the TDP regime provided delicious food at just Rs. 5 at Anna Canteens, the YSRCP government was providing tasteless food but collecting Rs. 500 from the Covid patients. The bed strength at the hospitals should be increased.

The Opposition leaders held placards demanding a roll back of the hike in prices of petrol and diesel. The increased current charges should be withdrawn in view of the steep fall in incomes of the general public. The liquor shops should be closed immediately considering the greater danger of infections from the unchecked crowds.

Meanwhile, TDP AP President K Kala Venkatrao said Coronavirus treatment and relief were apparently not in the government’s priority list which was why virus prevention measures took a back seat from the beginning. Till now, total Coronavirus cases reached 64,713 in the state and 823 persons lots their lives due to infection. It was disturbing that Andhra Pradesh crossed 50,000 cases in short time and stood in fifth place in the country. Even in Corona tests, inordinate delay was being caused which was leading to faster spread of the disease.

TTD employee succumbs to Covid-19, Subba Reddy silent on suspension of ‘darshans’

1

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) employee succumbed to Covid-19 on Friday.

The TTD employee, Veeraswamy, was admitted to Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) hospital in Tirupati a week ago.

He succumbed on Friday while battling with the deadly infection. The family members of the deceased TTD employee alleged that the SVIMS had failed to give proper treatment to Veeraswamy. A day before Veeraswamy succumbed to Covid-19, he sent text messages to his son about lack of facilities and doctors at the SVIMS hospital.

Recently, former TTD chief priest Srinivasa Murthy Deekshitulu had died due to Covid-19 while taking treatment at SVIMS.

Several TTD employees and archakas (assistant priests) were tested positive for Covid-19. More than 150 TTD employees were tested positive for the virus after temple darshans were re-opened after the coronavirus imposed lockdown was lifted. At least 15 archakas working at Tirumala temple tested positive for COVID-19 and were shifted to Tirupati where they were admitted to various hospitals. Honorary chief priest and agama advisor Ramana Dikshitulu had appealed to the TTD to close the shrine to devotees for a few weeks to protect the priests. TTD Pedda Jeeyar Swamy Sri Satagopa Ramanuja Pedda Jeeyangar had recently tested positive for Covid-19 and was shifted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai.

In a tweet, Deekshitulu had stated that at least 15 archakas (assistant priests) contracted the deadly Covid-19 infection. “Out of the 50 priests in Sri Vari temple, 15 archakas were tested positive for the corona virus. Additionally, test results of 25 archakas are awaited. The TTD should temporarily suspend darshans. Despite the archakas contracting the virus, the TTD has not stopped allowing darshans. One can expect a major disaster in Tirumala if the Chief Minister fails to respond to the current situation in Tirumala,” he had tweeted.

The TTD Staff and Workers United Front had also written to the TTD Executive Officer requesting that darshan at the temple be temporarily suspended. Apart from archakas, at least 140 TTD employees are known to have tested positive for Covid-19.

However, TTD Trust Board chairman Y V Subba Reddy on July 16 ruled out suspension of darshans while reacting to Deekshitulu’s tweet. While the Andhra Pradesh government had reimposed complete lockdown till August 15 in Tirupati, the TTD is yet to temporarily suspend Sri Vari ‘darshans’. Tirumala was exempted from complete lockdown despite the fact that several TTD employees, priests and devotees contracted the virus.

The TTD’s adamant stand in not suspending ‘darshans’ came under sharp criticism, many commented that the TTD Trust Board was more interested in filling its coffers showing little or no concern to the devotees, priests or the TTD employees. TTD Trust Board chairman remains silent on the temporary suspension of ‘darshans’ despite demand from various quarters.

Covid concerns: Health disaster awaits in AP, says Naidu

1

Former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday expressed concern over what he described as the continued negligence on the part of the YSRCP Government to check the spread of Coronavirus cases in Andhra Pradesh. Mr. Naidu alleged that as a result of the indifference of the ruling YSRCP, the state was facing the danger of falling victim to a health disaster.

The TDP chief, in a Twitter post, here objected to the herding of Covid patients into an RTC bus in Visakhapatnam. Giving a link for the video depicting the crowd, he said the latest incident took place even before the people had forgotten how suspected virus patients were herded into an ambulance in Kurnool district the other day. It may be recalled the Telugu Desam Party has been carrying out a 6-day agitation in protest against the lack of effective preventive measures and people rescue activities by the government. Mr. Naidu had slammed the government and the officials concerned for not removing the dead body of a deceased virus patient at a Coronavirus isolation treatment centre in Vijayawada yesterday. An 8-month pregnant woman shot the shocking video of a patient lying dead on the floor for three hours. She claimed that the patient vomited and died yet no staff had come about to help her. Such incidents were scary and pathetic.

Meanwhile, the TDP leaders continued their protests in response to Mr. Naidu’s call all over the State on the second day today. TDP Spokesperson Panchumarthy Anuradha said that every YSRCP activist was acting like a ‘belt shop’, going round on a motorcycle to sell liquor illegally and make easy money in this dangerous time.

Ms. Anuradha scoffed at the ruling party, saying that all its leaders who irresponsibly compared Coronavirus to Caste virus, were now testing positive and getting admitted in hospitals. The YSRCP leaders were paying their hefty price for their own negligent and indifferent attitude to such a dreaded virus like Covid. Multiple greeds of the ruling party leaders were reasons for rapid virus spread. Large queues were encouraged in front of liquor shops that led to spread of infections. By holding rallies and local body poll campaigns, the YSRCP MLAs and leaders turned into super spreaders of the disease among the local populations. For catering to its hunger for power, the ruling party adamantly stuck to its demand for going ahead with local body elections. But, eventually, the State Election Commissioner’s decision to postpone the elections proved right considering the unchecked rise in virus cases afterwards.

Ms. Anuradha advised the government to leave its non-serious attitude at least now and wake up to the need for creating dos and don’ts just like how former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu created awareness on the disease preventive measures. The YSRCP leaders should realize how much damage they have already done with their ‘paracetamol’ and ‘bleaching powder’ comments.

Covid-19 community transmission started in Telangana, says official

1

For the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic in Telangana, an official of the directorate of state medical health education has admitted that community transmission of Covid-19 has begun in the state.

In an interview to a TV channel, the official of the directorate of medical health education said, “Community spread has begun. In some cases, we are not able to determine the source and chain of infections. People have to be very careful in the coming four to five weeks. Unless civic sense prevails on people and they take home quarantine seriously, there will be a bigger surge and the possibility of a vast community spread,” the official of directorate of medical health education stated.

He admitted that post-lockdown there has been a surge in cases due to influx of people from more infected states, many also did not strictly follow home quarantine rules, leading to further spread among their family members and primary contacts, he pointed out.

The startling revelation comes at a time the state had been witnessing an alarming rise in the Covid-19 cases. Telangana reported 1,558 positive cases and nine succumbed to Covid 19 in the last 24 hours. The total number of positive cases crossed 49,259 while the fatalities crossed 438.

According to the World Health Organization, community spread occurs when a positive patient has not been exposed to another known Covid-19 patient, indicating that the infection is well-established in the community.

Even as the directorate of state medical health education confirmed there was community transmission in Telangana, the KCR government has remained silent on it. As a matter of fact, the government since the outbreak of the pandemic had been in a denial mode and maintained there was no community transmission even as the state neared 50,000 Covid-19 cases.

Health minister Eetala Rajender ruled out community transmission in Telangana citing a report by the directorate general of Indian Council of Medical Research report.

Exponential rise in Covid-19 positive cases among people and chances of them infecting the local population is a major risk factor, the official said. The regions that are most at risk of community transmission include Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Medchal, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Karimnagar

Further, the official of the directorate of medical health education cautioned that the state could see a further surge in the cases if people fail to follow protocols such as use of masks in public and physical distancing norms.

Ambati Rambabu test positive for Covid-19

2

Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy had recently stated that every single person will get Covid-19, a ludicrous statement ever made by any political leader so far.

One may not be sure if every single individual will contract the infection. Surely, an increasing number of Jagan’s MLAs are testing positive for the virus.

YSR Congress Rajya Sabha MP V Vijayasai Reddy has been infected with Covid-19. The Rajya Sabha MP has confirmed the same on Twitter handle. He is currently undergoing treatment in Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad.

Sattenapalli MLA Ambati Rambabu was tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday. However, in the case of Ambati Rambabu conflicting results emerged. Tests conducted twice at Sattenapalli government hospital gave two different results – one negative, the other positive. The Sattenpalli MLA has quarantined himself at home and is undergoing medical treatment. At least, 80 positive cases were reported in Sattenapalli so far.

Ambati Rambabu, a staunch critic of former chief minister and TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu, had once hit out at the Opposition parties for making false accusations against the government and creating panic among people about the pandemic.

Several YSR Congress legislators have been infected with the Coronavirus in AP. Tenali MLA Annabathuni Siva Kumar and Ponnur MLA Kilari Venkata Rosaiah were tested positive for Covid-19 earlier.

Andhra Pradesh has reported a total of 4,944 new Covid-19 cases and death of 62 Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours. The state now has 58,668 cases.

Harichandan takes cue from Tamilsai Soundarajan on Covid-19

1

Andhra Pradesh Governor Bishwabhusan Harichandan seems to have taken a cue from his Telangana counterpart Dr Tamilsai Soundararajan.

On Tuesday, he held a video-conference from Raj Bhavan in Vijaywada to take stock of the Covid-19 situation in the state.

In the video-conference, Andhra Pradesh Governor discussed in detail with Chief Secretary Nilam Sawhney and principal secretary (health) to review the measures being initiated by the state government to combat the pandemic. Harichandan enquired from the top officials on testing, treatment and medical facilities in government hospitals. The video-conference was also attended by Medical, Health and Family Welfare commissioner K Bhaskar and Rajamouli.

Harichandan’s video-conference with Andhra Pradesh chief secretary comes in the wake of the state reporting more than 4,000 new coronavirus cases and 54 deaths during the last 24 hours, taking the total number of infections in the state to 53,724 and the fatalities to over 696. Last Saturday, the state reported record 3,963 new Covid-19 cases with 52 virus-related deaths.

In Telangana, Dr Tamilsai Soundararajan had been proactive in assessing the Covid-19 situation in the state. She had openly expressed her anguish and unhappiness over the KCR government’s handling of the pandemic. She also called Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar and Special Chief Secretary (Health) Shanti Kumari to Raj Bhavan to assess the situation in the state. On several occasions, the Governor was openly critical of the government’s handling of Covid-19 situation in the state, patients being overcharged by private hospitals and lack of equipment in government hospitals. She criticised the government for not testing enough and advised the government to ramp up the testing in the state.

The Governor’s public criticism over the state’s response to the pandemic did not go down too well with Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao who met her at Raj Bhavan on July 20. The Telangana CM had discussed the measures the government has been taking to contain the spread of the virus, testing and treatment being given to the Covid-19 patients in various government hospitals in the state

Complete lockdown in Tirupati, questions raised over TTD

1

Municipal authorities have intensified their efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19 infections in the temple town of Tirupati with alarming rise in positive cases.

On Tuesday, the municipal staff have started santitising the hotspots in Tirupati as complete lockdown was reimposed in the temple town from Monday till August 5 to check its spread.

The district administration on Monday reimposed complete lockdown to contain the spread of the virus which will be enforced from 6 am to 11 pm till August 5. People will be allowed to buy essentials such as vegetables and groceries between 6 am and 11 pm daily although commercial establishments would remain closed during the lockdown period. Tirupati has seen a surge in infection rates after the complete lockdown was lifted. Currently, Tirupati has reported more than 1,700 positive Covi-19 cases of the total 5,400 COVID-19 cases in Chittoor district.

While the complete lockdown has been reimposed in Tirupati, Sri Vari darshans have not been halted by the TTD despite the growing number of archakas (assistant priests) testing positive for Covid-19. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) had recently held an emergency meeting of officials to discuss the demand for a temporary suspension of darshan for devotees in view of increasing number of archakas (assistant priests) testing positive for coronavirus. Around 18 archakas were tested positive for Covid-19. Recently, Sri Sri Satagopa Ramanuja Pedda Jeeyangar tested positive for Covid-19. He was shifted to Apollo Hospitals in Chennai for better treatment.

On July 16, temple honorary priest Ramana Deekshitulu took to his Twitter handle to demand that the darshans be temporarily stopped in view of an alarming increase in Covid-19 cases among the priests and devotees alike. In his tweet, Deekshitulu had stated that at least 15 archakas (priests) contracted the deadly Covid-19 infection.

The current political dispensation is following the anti-Brahmanical policies of Chandrababu Naidu. One can expect a major disaster in Tirumala if the Chief Minister fails to respond to the current situation in Tirumala,” he had tweeted.

Despite such demands, the TTD is yet to decide on temporary suspension of darshans. Questions are being raised over the TTD’s reluctance to temporarily halt ‘darshans’ to contain the spread of the virus among devotees and also archakas. The Opposition parties criticised that the TTD was more worried about filling its coffers and showing little or no concern for the devotees and archakas. They questioned the logic of reimposing the complete lockdown in Tirupati, while allowing darshans to devotees. Such lopsided policy will be counter-productive, they opined.

Telangana HC summons Somesh Kumar, top officials on COVID-19

0

Pulling up the KCR government over its handling of Covid-19 situation in the state, the Telangana High Court on Monday ordered state Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar among other top officials to appear before the court on June 28.

The High Court also ordered principal and chief secretaries of the state’s medical, health and municipal administration departments to appear before it on July 28. The court directed the district collectors to disclose district-wise details of COVID-19 cases. The court directed officials concerned to disclose details of number beds and ventilators available in various hospitals.

The court warned the state government that it is giving the last chance to comply with its orders failing which it will initiate stringent action against the officials. The High Court questioned Advocate General B.S. Prasad why cases should not be booked against the officials concerned for disobeying its earlier orders and why they should not be suspended for their inaction. Compared to other states, Telangana was far behind in data collection and sample testing, the court observed. Further, the HC stated that Telangana miserably failed on testing, falling behind states like Andhra Pradesh and Delhi.

The court turned its ire against the state government for not releasing bulletins with regard to the number of beds, ventilators, PPE kits, masks and gloves. On its direction to release critical information regarding Covid-19 in government media bulletins every day, the court noticed that vital details were conspicuously missing from the official releases. In a more serious observation, the HC was of the view that the Telangana government was deliberately hiding the facts and misleading the court. The court observed that it was the fundamental right of the people to know information about the number of beds, treatment and testing. “Is the government in deep slumber,” the HC questioned the Advocate General.

On July 2, the HC warned that it will be forced to summon the state chief secretary and other senior officials for a personal appearance if the authorities fail to follow its directions. The court warned that it will have to summon the principal secretary of the medical, health and family welfare department, MAUD principal secretary and GHMC commissioner — will have to appear before the court if its orders remain unimplemented.

COVID-19 cases in Telangana climbed to 43,780 with 409 fatalities.

Whopping 3,963 Covid-19 cases, 52 deaths in AP

0

Andhra Pradesh continued to record daily highs in novel coronavirus cases for more than a week. The state saw the biggest single-day spike in virus cases yet after it recorded nearly 4,000 confirmed Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.

With a whopping 3,963 new Covid-19 cases, the total number of coronavirus cases in Andhra Pradesh has climbed to 44,005, according to the state’s health department.

The death toll in the state has increased to 586 after 52 more virus-related fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours. In the one week, more than 250 people succumbed to the infection, a cause for serious concern. In the last 24 hours, East Godavari reported highest number of Covid-19 casualties with 12 deaths, followed by Guntur with 8 deaths, Krishna (8), Anantapur (7), Prakasam (4), West Godavari (5), Nellore (3), Vizag (2), one each in Chittoor, Kadapa and Vizianagaram.

On Friday, the state reported 2,602 new Covid-19 cases.

The dangerously spiralling COVID infections are due to the failure of the YSR government to understand the gravity of the problem early on by not formulating an action plan to check its transmission. The Chief Minister blamed the neighbouring states for the spread of virus in his state and not admitting his own administration for its failure to properly and effectively combat the pandemic by not executing an adequate response when it broke out. Recently, Jagan had hinted at his government’s inability to contain the further spread of the virus saying, “No one can stop the spread of the virus. Every single person can contract the infection. We have to live with it.”

Covid-19 spread in Telangana raises question over ‘Prajavani’

1

With over 150 employees in the offices of district collectors and revenue department in Telangana infected with Covid-19, ‘Prajavani’ or the weekly public grievances redressal day is giving jitters to the staff.

Collectors, Revenue Divisional Officers (RDOs) and Thesildars or Mandal Revenue Officers (MROs) are in a dilemma whether to go with the programmes held every Monday or cancel them.

Fifteen employees each have been tested positive in the offices of Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district collectors in the last couple of days. Twelve employees in six other district collectorates have also contracted the virus.

Several employees in the offices of RDOs and MROs have already tested positive. A MRO died of coronavirus in Mancherial district.

‘Prajavani’ is conducted every Monday at the offices of district collectors, RDOs and MROs. District collectors, additional collectors, deputy collectors and other district officials attend the programme held at the offices of all 33 district collectorates.

People submit applications to the officials about their problems and seek their redressal. The applications pertain to correction in land records, pensions, ration cards, caste certificates and benefits under various government schemes.

Hundreds of people turn up at collectorates, RDO and MRO offices to lodge their complaints. Employees concerned receive the complaints and upload them on the website. After the applicants call on the officials concerned, orders are issued on the action to be taken. At least 7-8 staff members have to speak to the people while registering their grievances.

Some employees in the revenue department say this was leading to the spread of the virus. Concerned over the recent spike in cases, the officials have installed boxes at MRO offices so that the people can drop in their complaints.

The Covid-19 cases in the offices of Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district collectors have sent the other staff members in tizzy. Several top officials have stopped coming to offices and few have gone into home quarantine as they had come into contact with those who tested positive.

Three drivers and 12 other employees at Hyderabad collectorate tested positive during the last couple of days.

Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy are the two worst affected districts, accounting for over 70 per cent of more than 42,000 cases reported so far in the state.

The state secretariat and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) recently saw many employees testing positive for Covid-19.

The staff at RDO and MRO level are scared as they not only have to attend the meetings but also make field visits to conduct an inquiry into land related matters or identify beneficiaries for schemes like double bed room houses for poor.

RDOs and MROs at few places in the state have already asked people not to come to the office but either drop in their applications in the boxes installed outside the offices or contact the village revenue officers on WhatsApp.

Some district collectors are considering the proposal to conduct ‘Prajavani’ through video conferencing to avoid assembly of large number of people at their offices.

Telangana Revenue Employees Services Association (TRESA) president V. Ravinder Reddy has demanded that the government cancel all the meetings and public interaction programmes till Coronavirus is completely contained.

“Several employees who tested positive are facing severe hardships as they are unable to pay the hefty bills at private hospitals. To save the employees from further inconvenience the government should cancel all meetings and such programmes where they have to interact with people,” he said.

TTD crucial meeting to decide suspension of darshans at Tirumala

1

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) will be holding an emergency meeting of officials and priests on Saturday to discuss the demand for a temporary suspension of darshan for devotees in view of increasing number of archakas (assitant priests) testing positive for coronavirus.

It is all likely that the TTD could temporarily suspend darshans as 18 archakas (assitant priests) were tested positive for Covid-19. According to reports, Pedda Jeeyar and Chinna Jeeyar were also tested positve for the infection.

Pedda jeeyar being shifted to Apollo hospitals in chennai with his health condition deteoriating. Worried over the increasing number of priests contracting the virus after the reopening of darshan post-lockdown, the TTD is seriously mulling to temporarily halt Sri Vari darshan to devotees.

The current political dispensation is following the anti-Brahmanical policies of Chandrababu Naidu. One can expect a major disaster in Tirmuala if the Chief Minister fails to respond to the current situation in Tirumala,” he had tweeted.

The TTD Staff and Workers United Front had also written to the TTD Executive Officer requesting that darshan at the temple be temporarily suspended. Apart from archakas, at least 140 TTD employees are known to have tested positive for Covid-19.

However, TTD Trust Board chairman Y V Subba Reddy in July 16 ruled out suspension of darshans while reacting to Deekshitulu’s tweet. Further, Subba Reddy claimed that 70 of the infected had been discharged and the rest were undergoing treatment. Less than 12,000 devotees will be allowed to enter the temple daily, he said.

On July 4, Subba Reddy claimed that not even a single devotee tested positive for COVID-19 since resumption of services at the Venkateswara temple in Tirumala on June 8. He had claimed that only 17 employees of the devasthanams tested positive.

Reacting sharply to Ramana Dikshitulu, Subba Reddy advised the honorary chief priest to put forth any issue before the TTD Trust Board and desist from making public statements. Further, Subba Reddy stated that he had directed the TTD officials to discuss the issues being brought to the fore by Ramana Dikshitulu.

“Ramana Dikshitulu was appointed as honorary chief priest by Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy. We have taken all necessary measures to protect the priests. The TTD Trust Board is also willing to temporarily suspend darshans in the interests of archakas,” Subba Reddy said.

Meanwhile, TTD Executive Officer Anil Kumar Singhal said, “None of the devotees have any health issues. We called 700 devotees between June 18 to 24 and called 1,943 devotees between July 1 to 7. All of them replied that they are healthy,” However, according to some reports, hundreds of TTD staff and devotees tested positive for the virus ever since Tirumala temple reopened on June 11 which remained shut for nearly 85 days due to the lockdown.
