Cricket: A game of destiny and lady luck

(Yajurvindra Singh is a former Test cricketer)

There were tears of joy and sorrow, disappointment and happiness at the end of the biggest tournament of cricket – the World Cup. These are emotions that normally emerge when one watches any sporting encounter, especially when it involves a world title.

Cricket won the day on July 14, 2019 in England at Lord’s. The final between England and New Zealand, which for most of the match seemed boring, looked like two boxers whose bouts lacked punches and were waiting for the other to blink. The English teams’s hero and their brilliant allrounder, Ben Stokes, summed it up beautifully at the end.

Stokes was the bowler who was hit for a six in the last over when the West Indies won the World T20 final in Kolkata in 2016. He had also seen Bangladesh losing against India in an encounter when Mushfiqur Rahim, their batsman, failed to clear the line.

Stokes, a hard-hitting batsman, known to clear the fence at will, batting on 83 runs, did not succumb to his natural instinct. His explanation thereafter seemed to substantiate that he decided to play safe rather than be sorry at the end. This shows how important it is with regards to the mental state of a cricketer at that moment, as the negative thoughts of his previous failure came forth strongly.

England managed to tie the encounter through a ball that Stokes could have hit effortlessly out of the park. Retrospectively, his decision did prove to be successful when England finally got the verdict favouring them in the Super Over through a mindless rule of hitting more boundaries in the match.

Like all things in life, a cricketer needs lady luck on his side. The most popular saying amongst the cricketers is “Khelna hai to khelo, par Aisa hi hoga” (If you want to play, play, but this is how it will happen). Thinking deeply, the words are so appropriate.

A cricketer’s life from the first day he holds the bat or the ball till his final adieu revolves around the word “destiny”. The phrase “it evens out”, because of a bad umpiring decision or “practice makes one more perfect” or the most common one of all — “the more you practice, the less you depend on luck” are all sayings fabricated to make one get over failures. I do not believe in such random reasoning, as cricketers at all levels practice as hard as the other and, at most times, the chances of evening out during one’s career, are far and few between.

The New Zealand cricket team is a prime example of lady-luck leaving them when most required. A freak over-throw, bad umpiring decisions and a ridiculous ruling can only be related to their fate and destiny. How else can one describe their defeat?

The easy viewing of cricket through television and the mobile phone and numerous replays are now amplifying the luck factor that goes into the success of a cricketer. Earlier, this never got highlighted the way it is today. Rohit Sharma may have scored 5 centuries in the recent World Cup but if he did not have good fortune to help him, 4 of the innings would have had him back in the pavilion for a single-digit score. In the semi-final, his luck ran out, unfortunately for India, and the technical defects in his batting that one was aware of, became his nemesis once again.

Cricket is full of such stories and the popular cliché — “fortune favours the brave” is how a lucky and blessed cricketer is looked at after his successful performance. The conclusion from such a random statement is that England, whom the gods blessed, were the only brave side in the tournament. Yes, hard work, developing one’s skills, hours of practice does culminate into making one better at execution, but this is not unique as every cricketer goes through the same ritual.

In all my years of playing cricket, I have never been able to understand as to why at times I did do so well and as to why at times did I fail. I often wondered why I was selected to play for my country from among hundreds of other aspirants and finally why I was dropped from the Indian team. Chartering a path in cricket, especially with its ups and downs are what makes this game uncertain and thrilling.

Jimmy Neesham’s heartbreaking message posted after New Zealand’s defeat “kids don’t take up sports, take up baking, you will die at 60, fat and happy”, truly signifies the frustration and disappointment that a cricketer faces in defeat.

The two best sides of the World Cup tournament, India and Australia, in just 45 minutes of misfortune, never recovered to justify their seedings. Both the sides must be wondering as to what they did wrong to be struck by the wand of defeat. They were the two favourites after the group stage and their coach, support staff and strategies were all that the cricket media, fans and followers were eulogizing about.

One defeat is all that it took to bring them down.

The matured followers that are Australian cricket fans took their defeat as a “stroke of fate”. The Indian fans, on the other hand, have gone into an emotional state of madness. Sack the coach and the support staff, change the captain, retire the old and bring in the new are immature and unreasonable demands being flashed across every news medium around the country.

No one has blamed lady-luck and unfulfilled prayers that evaded us when most needed. Most foreigners are amused at the popular Indian saying of, “we are like this only” when things are not going well. However, the game that lives, breathes and revels on uncertainty is never given that excuse by an Indian.

This is what makes cricket a religion in India and maybe like life, Indians need to accept their destiny. Kane Williamson was not only the man of the tournament, which he was so rightly awarded but also the cricketer to marvel at. He was miles ahead, not only as the captain of the losing side on the field but way ahead off the field as well. A great leader, who came out winning even while losing. Well done Kane, let’s hope the rest are able to follow.

Some jealous people waiting to see end of Dhoni’s international career: Shastri

0

“Looks like there are a lot of jealous people around, who just want Dhoni to have a couple of bad days…. There are a few people who are waiting to see the end of MS Dhoni. But great players like him decide their own future,” Shastri said in an interview to the Bengali daily Anandabazar Patrika.

He said the Indian team knew well Dhoni’s worth and the criticism against the dashing wicketkeeper-batsman made no difference to them.

“It (the criticism) doesn’t make a difference to me. In our mind we know where Dhoni stands within the team. He is an ultimate team man. He was a great leader and now an ultimate team man.”

In a dig at some former cricketers and experts who were critical of Dhoni now and have suggested he be dropped from the T20 side, he said: “Not so long ago I used to do television and people used to ask me questions. You need to answer questions to make a show happen.

“Dhoni is a superstar. He is one of our greatest cricketers. So he is always going to be a great topic. He is always going to be a topic because he is a legend. When you have a career as glorious as that, you become a topic on television.”

Shastri pointed out that Dhoni, who has retired from Test cricket, has averaged over 65 in one-day Internationals over the last one year and helped India win matches in Sri Lanka and against Australia at home in the last series only.

Ironically, in Kumble’s demand for an increment was exactly to the tune of what Shastri will be getting.

The three other coaches — Bharat Arun, R Sridhar and Sanjay Bangar are expected to be bracketed between Rs 2,3 crore taking into account that they need to be compensated for foregoing their IPL contracts.

Kohli should be boss of India team: Thakur

0

Asserting that the captain’s role is more important than that of the coach, former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCC) President Anurag Thakur has called for skipper Virat Kohli being allowed full control over the Indian team.

The Indian team, especially skipper Virat Kohli, has been at the centre of a controversy after Anil Kumble resigned as coach following a humiliating 180-run loss to Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final on June 18.

Kumble had hinted at differences with Kohli in his resignation letter to the BCCI. There have also been reports that several players were unhappy with Kumble’s strict disciplinarian approach.

Some players were also reportedly unhappy after Kumble handed a harsh dressing down to the team following the defeat in the Champions Trophy final.

Following Kumble’s departure, Vinod Rai, head of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), and several former players have come out in support of the legendary leg-spinner.

Thakur, however, defended Kohli and harked back to 2006-07 and the controversy between former India captain Sourav Ganguly and then coach Greg Chappell as an example.

“Why is extra pressure being created on Virat? It is not right to target Virat over these issues because this is not the first time such a thing has happened. Greg Chappell was also removed earlier.

“It has always been the case that the captain is more important than the coach. The captain’s opinion is given importance even in selection matters because ultimately it is he who has to make the team perform,” Thakur told IANS.

“Right now, there is no better batsman than Virat in Indian cricket. If we have to maintain the current standards of the Indian team over the next 10 years, and even improve our performance levels, then we have to depend on Virat,” he added.

Thakur, who was forced to step down as BCCI chief following the implementation of the recommendations of the Supreme Court-appointed Justice R.M. Lodha committee, also took a dig at the present dispensation over the issue.

Observing that such controversies never took place during his stint with the board, the current head of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) alleged that the present BCCI management has “mishandled” the entire affair.

“As long as I was at the head of the BCCI, there were no controversies of this nature. We had conducted all our appointments in a transparent manner. The people running the BCCI at present should be asked why these things come into the public domain,” Thakur said.

“My opinion is totally clear in this matter. Virat should be the boss of the team. He must be the boss, he is the boss. He is the captain of the team and that is why he should be the boss,” he asserted.

Talking about the role of the coach, Thakur said: “The coach has his own importance. But it is the captain who leads the 11 players on the field, that is why his words and his needs should be given more importance.”

Kohli deletes year-old tweet welcoming Kumble

0

India captain Virat Kohli has deleted his year-old tweet welcoming Anil Kumble’s appointment as the national cricket team coach, further exposing the bitterness that had crept in.

Kohli deleted the post on the microblogging site close on the heals of the spin legend’s decision to resign from his post due to “untenable” differences with the captain.

Soon after Kumble’s appointment, Kohli had tweeted on June 23 last year, greeting him with a smiley and expressed hopes of a great future under his guidance.

“Heartiest welcome to @anilkumble1074 Sir. Look forward to your tenure with us. Great things in store for Indian Cricket with you ??” Kohli had posted on his official twitter handle, which he has deleted now.

Kumble, who was given a one-year tenure, quit from his position as the head coach after the final of the Champions Trophy.

Although the BCCI Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, wanted him to continue but Kumble relinquished his position, stating that his relationship with Kohli became “untenable”.

According to reports, Kumble and Kohli had a major fallout in the the beginning of the year and were not on talking terms for the last six months.

The situation worsened further after India’s humiliating loss to arch-rivals Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final.

Kumble did not travel with the team to the West Indies, and later officially tendered his resignation.

Kumble-Kohli communication had stopped six months ago: BCCI official

0

The BCCI top brass had an inkling that all was not well but they were taken aback when they came to know that captain Virat Kohli and chief coach Anil Kumble were not in talking terms for the “last six months”.

Another important thing that has come out in the open was that the Chief Advisory Committee, comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, also didn’t straightaway give the green light to Kumble’s extension.

“There had been reports that the CAC had okayed Kumble’s extension. They had okayed his extension but with a rider. They had said that Kumble should be retained provided all pending issues are resolved,” a senior BCCI official, who was present in London during the whole episode, told PTI.

Post the ICC Champions Trophy final, there were three separate meetings at the Indian team’s hotel.

The first was where Kumble met the BCCI top brass and members of CAC followed by Kohli meeting them.

The last and the most “eventful” meeting was when Kohli and Kumble were made to sit across the table. The talks failed completely as there was no communication.

“The two had stopped talking to each other since December when the England Test series got over. There were problems but it was like shocking that the two didn’t have any proper communication for the past six months. On Sunday evening after the final, they were made to sit across table and they both agreed that it’s not working out.”

When asked what was the problem, the source said: “When we spoke to Anil separately and specifically asked him if there’s any problem, he said he has ‘no problems with Virat’. He was also told about the specific areas where Kohli has reservations about his functioning, while Anil said these were non-issues.”

The official sounded helpless.

“Look, if one of the two protagonists feel that there are issues which seemed to be non-issue to the other one, only these two can then sort out. Once they sat across the table, both realised after coming out that it has gone beyond repair. Anil’s tickets were booked for Barbados. His wife was also supposed to join him but he knew it was over,” the official added.

Asked if he could be more specific, the official said: “Let’s put it that Virat felt that Anil is entering an area which was his domain. For Anil, who has been a decorated player and an India captain, he has his own beliefs and ideas but the final call always stays with the captain,” he said.
