Is DJ Team Hiding Overseas Failure Under the Guise of Piracy?

Allu Arjun’s latest release ‘Duvvada Jagannadham’, which was released on June 23 amidst very high expectations, has taken a terrific start at box office. The film however has significantly slowed after first week’s run and is expected to end up as an average film in the domestic market. On the other hand, DJ is a huge failure in overseas.

Ever since DJ team has landed in the US to promote the film, they are repeatedly talking about Piracy and Reviews in every public meeting and media interview. It appears as if they are blaming piracy and negative reviews the reason for DJ underperforming in overseas. They have allegedly lectured overseas audiences to not encourage piracy and critics to respect Telugu cinema, primarily DJ.

If overseas audience depend so much on piracy then films like Pelli Choopulu, Nani starrers, A..Aa and many others wouldn’t have performed better here than in the Telugu states. In the end, ‘Content’ matters, and a film with strong content can emerge victorious despite ‘Piracy’, which can dent a maximum of 5 percent of
films’ revenue.

Instead of allegedly lecturing audiences (piracy) and critics (reviews), DJ team should realize that they had dished out a mundane product which failed to evoke audience’ interest. DJ team should gracefully accept the reality and try to produce better films in future rather than allegedly hiding their film’s drawbacks under the guise of piracy.

In the Thank You meet held in Hyderabad by the makers of Allu Arjun’s ‘Duvvada Jagannatham’, the core team, especially director Harish Shankar and Allu Arjun cried foul on piracy and negative reviews. They had even lodged an official complaint against piracy of their film.

The venue has changed, but their laments haven’t. Allu Arjun, Dil Raju and Harish Shankar who have attended the NATS function in Chicago, have unequivocally talked about how piracy and negative reviews affect films such as DJ. They appealed the attendees and to whoever that is watching the function to not encourage piracy and watch DJ and other such Telugu films in theatres only.

Well, the Team DJ has conveniently ignored the ridiculous high prices set for tickets of DJ. At a time when tickets of relatively bigger Hindi and English movies are priced at $8-10, tickets of sub par Telugu movies are priced at $16-20. This trend obviously discourages people from going to theatres.

High ticket price is arguably the most probable reason for piracy. Even though piracy mongers resort to piracy, audiences don’t encourage it if they have the feasibility of watching those movies in theatres at reasonable prices. People rely on piracy mostly when the makers fix exorbitant prices for tickets. Makers should first understand this aspect and make amends rather than blame audiences for encouraging piracy.

DJ hits one million in overseas, but…

DJ Overseas, Duvvada Jagannadham Overseas

Allu Arjun’s latest entertainer Duvvada Jagannadham, which amassed 100 Crores gross worldwide in the first week, has touched another milestone by the end of second Friday. The film has entered the million dollar club in overseas by collecting $ 20K on the second Friday, taking the total to $ 1.02M.

After taking a good start in overseas with a $542K haul on the first day( including premieres) , DJ stumbled towards the weekend and managed a $ 880K haul in the first weekend. Taking advantage of the T-Mobile offer, the film collected a decent $ 66K on Monday. But, the collections have nosedived throughout the second week.

Trade circles predict that the overseas buyers will incur considerable losses in all areas as the film was sold for at a hefty price. This is the third film in Allu Arjun’s career to hit the million dollar club after Race Gurram ($ 1.42 M) and Son of Satyamurthy ($ 1.25M).

The Telangana state government issued a G.O. on Monday night, allowing hike in the ticket prices. As per new rates, Single screen A.C. theatres in Hyderabad metro area are allowed to sell at 120 Rupees, Multiplexes are allowed at Rs. 200-300.

Even for ‘Bahubali-2’ there was no ticket price hike in Telangana region, but the government allowed an extra show per day. Now, finally in view of upcoming GST tax system, government has allowed ticket price hike.

However, in entire Telangana, many single screen theatres were selling tickets at Rs.100 from last Friday. It is learnt that with this near 40% hike in ticket selling price for last 4 days has been enormously helping this week’s release ‘Duvvada Jagannadham’ to earn good box-office collections in Telangana region despite mixed talk. This film has collected good amounts in Ceeded, Andhra areas too for first three days.

By all means, ‘Duvvada Jagannadham’ had a perfect release timing.

OS box office report : DJ stumbles after decent start

DJ Overseas, Duvvada Jagannadham Overseas

Telugu film Duvvada Jagannadham starring Allu Arjun and Pooja Hegde, opened its overseas box office account with a promising $ 542K on its first day (including Thursday premiers). This is the best opener in overseas for Allu Arjun. The action comedy had a decent Saturday with $ 229K taking the total past $ 750K, but the Sunday collections are not so encouraging.

As per the latest trade reports, DJ collected close to $ 63K by Sunday night and might only add a few more by the end of the day. However, the film has been performing comparatively better than Salman Khan’s Tube Light which is witnessing dull response in overseas. DJ might cross the one million mark by the end of second weekend. Nevertheless, it might end up as a loss venture for the overseas buyers.

The lackluster narration and a poor second half disappointed the audience, but Allu Arjun’s performance and Pooja Hegde’s glamour quotient are the saving grace for the film.

Why Harish Shankar Squanders Golden chances?

Harish Shankar is one of the most talented directors in Tollywod. His skill was on display in ‘Mirapakay’ and ‘Gabbar Singh’. He made these two films with the burning desire of proving himself. Once he tasted stardom with ‘Gabbar Singh’, its all downhill for him.

Thanks to the success of ‘Gabbar Singh’, Harish grabbed the golden opportunity of directing NTR. A successful producer, Dil Raju and two top actresses – Samantha and Shruti Haasan were his collaborators on this highly anticipated film. And, the result is ‘Ramayya Vasthavayya’, a horribly executed film. Harish completely squandered the golden opportunity given by NTR.

He had to wait for two long years for his next film. And, he could rope in only Sai Dharam Tej as his hero since no star hero was ready to work with him. With a disaster like RV haunting him, he worked hard and managed to make ‘Subramanyam for Sale’, which fortunately turned out to be an average fare.

The next golden chance came to Harish in the form of DJ, an immediate next film of Bunny after his career biggest commercial hit, ‘Sarrainodu’. Once again Dil Raju is in the producer’s chair. And, Harish has wasted this starry chance as well. DJ is getting panned by critics as well as rational audiences. Harish’s magic is seen only in the dialogues. The utter-routine story, weak second half and the farce climax hint at the over-confidence of the director.

Film goers wonder why this talented filmmaker keeps squandering these big opportunities.

He probably intends to convey, ‘Content Unnodiki Cut out chalu’ (Cut out is enough for the one who has content), an iconic dialogue penned by Harish and mouthed by Pawan Kalyan in ‘Gabbar Singh’.

Really challenging to make good commercial film: Harish Shankar

Filmmaker Harish Shankar, best known for delivering blockbuster Telugu films such as “Gabbar Singh” and “Subramanyam For Sale”, believes it’s really challenging to make a good commercial film.

“Writing and making commercial cinema is very challenging. You need to be sure of what will work with the masses and what doesn’t. Every second needs to be written in a way that it appeals to the audience,” Harish told IANS.

His latest film “Duvvada Jagannadham” aka “DJ”, starring Allu Arjun in the lead, is slated for release on Friday.

Harish said “DJ” pushed him as a writer and director within the commercial space.

“It changed the way how the template of commercial cinema is treated. In most commercial films, when we reach the climax we know the hero will emerge victorious. We know that it will end with an action bang. The climax of ‘DJ’ will surprise audiences,” he said.

“As a writer, I have treated the dialogues differently and have not relied solely on punch lines. Also, in commercial cinema, the focus is usually on the hero. In ‘DJ’, I have shifted focus on other key characters as well and they all have shined in their roles,” he added.

On working with Arjun, with whom he has teamed up for the first time, Harish said it was “inspiring”.

Arjun plays a Brahmin cook in the film, which also stars Pooja Hegde.

“His hard work is very inspiring and it in turn motivated me to push harder. After I told him about his character, he started interacting with Brahmin priests and cooks. We shot for 110 days and there was never any dip in his dedication level throughout the course of the shoot. On most days, even after we packed up, he’d sit and discuss scenes for the next day,” he said.

Working on ‘DJ’ has been fulfilling: Pooja Hegde

Actress Pooja Hegde, last seen in Ashutosh Gowarikers “Mohenjo Daro”, says she had a fulfilling experience while working in the upcoming Telugu entertainer “Duvvada Jagannadham” aka “DJ”.

“I thoroughly enjoyed shooting for ‘DJ’ and the experience has been very fulfilling. As an actor, it’s essential a film does well, but its fate is not in our hands. What’s more important are the memories you make while working on each project,” Pooja told IANS.

She said: “You spend nearly six months on a project. You leave everything and stay with people you don’t even know. If you don’t enjoy working with them, nothing else really matters. You need to find a family in the people you work with. I’m glad I found a family in ‘DJ’.”

Having mostly played the homely, girl-next-door girl in her Telugu films so far, Pooja has upped the glamour quotient in “DJ”.

“Unlike my simple and good looking avatars so far, I have played a very glamorous role. It’s the kind of character that helped me grow as an actor,” she said, heaping praise on co-star Allu Arjun.

“He is like a rubber man… someone who can dance phenomenally and he does it with certain swag. I always end up working with great dancers. It was Hrithik (Roshan) last time and now Arjun,” she said.

“Each time I saw his dance portion, I’d call him and say how he nailed every step. I would tell him jokingly that I have to take extra dance lessons just to match his performance. He is a very friendly and honest co-star,” she said.

Directed by Harish Shankar, the film is slated for release on Friday.

On working with Harish, Pooja said: “He is the funniest director I have ever worked with. You take any behind-the-scene photograph and you’d find us – Harish, Arjun and I – laughing and goofing around. We had so much fun shooting.”

Pooja says Harish is very easy to work with.

“He is the kind of director who doesn’t mind when you tell him something. He will try and convince you but if your opinion genuinely helps a film, he’d be willing to accept it. A lot of directors don’t give this freedom,” she added.

The phenomenon of Benefit Shows took birth as fans yearn to watch the films of their favorite heroes much before everyone else. This has been continuing for years. But, of late, star heroes are refraining their producers from screening fans’ shows, reason Negative Talk.

Take the example of Ram Charan’s ‘Bruce Lee’. As negative talk spread from the benefit shows, the film’s opening got severely affected. Some anti-fans watch benefit shows only with the intention of spreading negative talk and highlighting the film’s drawbacks on social media.

Allu Arjun is the very first star hero to have said no to benefit shows. For his last film ‘Sarrainodu’, there were no benefit shows. Now, Bunny is heard to have advised the producer of his new film ‘DJ’ not to screen benefit shows. So, we can rule out the possibility of benefit shows in Nizam. Coming to other areas, shows may start as early as 6 in the morning.

DJ is getting ready for a massive release on June 23. US premieres are being planned one day in advance.

Here recent Bollywood biggie Mohenjo Daro with Hrithik Roshan ended up as a huge dud and it was during this time a golden opportunity knocked Pooja. She has been roped in to play the female lead in Allu Arjun’s next movie Duvvada Jagannadham. This Harish Shankar directorial is one of the most awaited films.

Pooja Hegde’s presence from the film received wide response and the actress has been approached by many filmmakers. The latest update is that the actress hiked her fee and she signed her next beside Bellamkonda Sreenivas and the film will be directed by Sriwas . She reportedly charged Rs 1.5 crore for the film and the makers are happy to pay the quoted figure. The film is expected to start rolling from August this year.

Dil Raju, arguably the most shrewd filmmakers who can come out with least damage even in the case of disasters, has pocketed table profit with his upcoming production venture, Stylish Star Allu Arjun’s Duvvada Jagannatham – DJ.

The craze for this action entertainer has helped Raju strike handsome deals with distributors of all areas. He hit goldmine in the form of satellite and dubbing rights as well. Raju recovered the entire production cost of DJ including remunerations of stellar technicians who worked for this film by selling the distribution (except Nizam area) and satellite rights.

Being the most happening distributor in Nizam region, Dil Raju will himself release DJ in this area. Anywhere around Rs 20 crore share is expected given the craze for this Harish Shankar directorial. Overall, Dil Raju has earned around a cool Rs 25 crore profit with DJ. He may earn a few more crores in the form of overflows but it will all depend on the kind of deals he had struck with his distributors.

With DJ trailer crossing 10 million views mark in very short span, second fastest after Baahubali 2 in South India, Raju and team is confident of the Bunny starer taking phenomenal opening on June 23.
