Experts advise to look for other sources of drinking water in Amaravati

Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) organised a 4-day workshop on Amaravati master plans. Experts from Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC-Singapore) who attended the conference suggested that considering the future requirements, the state should look for alternate sources of drinking water instead of depending only on River Krishna.

As per the reports in The Hindu, CLC Executive Director Khoo Teng Chye and Senior Deputy Director Aloha Ta speaking on the last day of the workshop said that different and crucial arrangements for drinking water has to be planned now itself.

It may be noted that there will be three reservoirs – Sakhamuru (50 acres), Nelapadu (450 acres) and Krishnayapalem (190 acres) to hold with a total storage capacity of 0.8 tmcft. The experts suggested that these reservoirs should also serve the drinking water purpose to an extent.

The delegation from Singapore recommended to setup a conjoint authority for drinking water supply, flood management, handling storm water and waste water.

They also said informed the CRDA to reconsider setting up waste water treatment plants in 13 zones. It suggested that keeping smaller number of the plants of bigger size is best approach as the maintenance would be less expensive.

AP moots Water Corporation for safe drinking water in villages

Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced the setting up of a drinking water corporation to ensure safe drinking water to every household in the state. The modalities of setting up the corporation will be discussed during the Collectors Conference scheduled to be held during this week.

As the monsoon season is round the corner, the Chief Minister called for a meeting with the officials of the Panchayat Raj department and asked them to prepare an action plan to prevent water born diseases.

The Chief Minister said that in the coming rainy season the gram panchayats should take up sanitation programme in a big way to arrest the spread of mosquitoes and diseases. He said if necessary the services of NREGA workers should be used thrice a week for taking up sanitation works in the villages.

The Chief Minister has asked the health department to gear up and prepare an action plan to prevent the spread of diseases. He asked the departments of Panchayat Raj, Rural Development and Health to join together in alerting the public. He said that a massive campaign should be launched to bring awareness among people to maintain hygienic conditions during the coming monsoon season.

Minister for IT and Panchayat Raj Nara Lokesh said that the Uddanam problem would be addressed completely by the end of July. He said that purified drinking water would be supplied under NTR Srujala Sravanti to Uddanam Village and its surrounding areas starting from July end.
