Corona in Arogyasri or KCR in Gandhi: A strange demand in TS

1

A strange demand has come up in Telangana from Covid patients over the issue of treatment to corona patients.

Corona patients are demanding Telangana government either to include corona treatment under Arogyasri or admit Telangana CM KCR in Gandhi Hospital for corona treatment.

Corona patients and their family members in Gandhi hospital are making this demand by holding placards in front of hospital.

They say the facilities in Gandhi hospital are poor and they want to get admitted in private hospitals but they cannot afford higher treatment costs in private hospitals..

For this reason they are demanding Telangana government to bring corona treatment under Arogyasri so that they can avail free treatment in private hospitals.

If not they are demanding government to admit CM KCR, who tested corona positive and undergoing treatment at his farmhouse, in Gandhi Hospital.

They say if KCR is admitted in Gandhi Hospital, officials will improve all facilities in Gandhi and they can get good treatment in Gandhi.

The demand and protests by corona patients in Gandhi has gone viral on social media platforms.

Contract staff at Hyderabad’s Gandhi Hospital on indefinite strike

0

Over 700 contract staff, including nurses, sanitary and security workers, of government-run Gandhi Hospital here went on an indefinite strike on Wednesday, demanding regularisation of services and salary hikes.

The strike impacted the outpatient services and caused severe inconvenience to patients at the hospital, designated the Centre of Excellence for COVID care wherein critical cases are treated.

The indefinite strike began after four days of protest by the contract employees to press for their demands.

Contractual nursing staff were the first to raise their voice. Over 200 nurses have been demanding hike in salaries and regularisation of services.

The protesting nurses say that their demand is justified as they are risking their lives to render services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Five contract nurses were recently found infected with coronavirus while discharging their duties.

Many nurses say they were appointed on contract basis in 2007 and are still paid Rs 17,000 per month while those appointed in 2018 were drawing salaries of over Rs 25,000.

Representatives of the protesting nurses had met Health Minister Eatala Rajender on Sunday but the talks failed to end the deadlock.

Sanitary and security staff working on contract basis also joined the nurses in the protest, demanding hike in wages.

Gandhi Hospital has seen series of protests by different sections of the employees over the last three months.

Junior doctors had also staged protest on two occasions against attacks by the relatives of COVID patients.

Now, body goes missing from Gandhi Hospital

1

The staff of Gandhi Hospital and the police are in a tizzy as the body of the corona patient who succumbed has gone missing from the morgue.

On June 9, Rasheed Alikhan, a resident of Asifnagar, was admitted to the Gandhi Hospital after testing positive for coronavirus. The next day (on June 10), he passed away in the hospital while undergoing treatment. When the relatives went to Gandhi Hospital to take the body of the deceased, to their utter shock and disbelief, they were told that the body was missing from the mortuary.

After learning that the body was missing, the family of the deceased approached the police who lodged a complaint. The relatives of the deceased bemoaned that the hospital management have not updated them about the body.
This is not the first incident of a body missing from Gandhi Hospital mortuary.

Earlier, the body of a resident of Vanstalipuram who succumbed to Covid-19 went missing. 42-year-old Madhusudan was admitted with coronavirus symptoms and was tested positive on April 30. He succumbed to the virus on May 1. When Madhusudan’s wife A Madhavi went to claim the body, she was shocked after being informed about the news of the death and cremation of her husband. Madhavi had tweeted to Telangana IT Minister K T Rama Rao saying that her husband, who was being treated at the Gandhi Hospital with COVID-19, has gone missing. Responding to Madhavi’s tweet to KTR, Dr M Rajarao, the superintendent of Gandhi Hospital, retweeted her saying her husband was cremated after he succumbed to the COVID-19 infection.

Nothing seems to be going right in Gandhi Hospital – missing bodies in the hospital, junior doctors on strike, increasing attacks on medical staff and lack of adequate medical equipment.

The hospital is teeming with corona positive patients as infection cases are on the surge in Telangana even as doctors are working over-time treating patients. The hospital has already reached its full capacity with 100 patients admitted last Friday and 200 on Saturday. Around 805 new Covid-19 cases were admitted in the hospital in the last 10 days.

The pandemic is wreaking havoc by increasing the pressure on an already overstretched healthcare system. Junior doctors are on strike over growing physical assault against the medical staff demanding that the government provide Special Police Protection.

Recently, 33-year-old TV5 crime reporter Manoj who had tested positive for the coronavirus a few days back had succumbed while undergoing treatment at the hospital. Manoj recorded the facilities or the lack of it in Gandhi Hospital while he was undergoing treatment. These visuals went viral and created a flutter in social media over the treatment facilities in the hospital. Manoj’s sensational revelation has exposed the shallowness of medical facilities in Gandhi Hospital. “The hospital has failed to provide oxygen. Doctors and paramedic staff are not properly and adequately attending to corona patients. The facilities even in ICU leaves much to be desired,” these were the last words of Manoj before he had succumbed to Covid.

Protesting docs bring KCR govt to its knees, Eetala assures protection

Health minister Eetala Rajender buckled under pressure after the protesting doctors staged a dharna outside the Gandhi Hospital which was designated as Covid-19 hospital. After more than 20 hours of protest since Tuesday midnight decrying the increasing physical assaults on them, Eetala Rajender met the junior doctors. The Health Minister pacified the junior doctors and assured all protection to the protesting doctors in discharging their duties without fear at the Gandhi Hospital.

More than 300 junior doctors protested against the increasing attacks against the medical staff and also over the state government’s inability to provide them with protective gear essential to combat the coronavirus. Fear has gripped doctors at Gandhi Hospital after a junior doctor was attacked by relatives of a 55-year-old corona patient who died at the hospital on Tuesday night. Following this, the Junior Doctors Association (JUDA) launched a protest on Tuesday midnight outside the Gandhi Hospital demanding that the state government provide protection to them and also adequate protective gear to the medical staff. The attack and shortage of safety gear has sparked rebellion among doctors at the Gandhi Hospital.

They raised slogans, ‘CM ravali, CM ravali, we want justice’. Although the police arrested two persons for the physical assault on the junior doctors, the Junior Doctors Association (JUDA) stopped working. Barring Emergency Services, all the other services came to a standstill. “The state government said there will be zero tolerance in attacks on doctors. The attack on the doctors is on the rise and the government had failed to punish the accused and protect us from such attacks,” said a junior doctor.

The assault on doctors and paramedical staff at Gandhi Hospital comes at a time when they have been working tirelessly to give the patients the best care while making sure they don’t carry the virus back home.

While Telangana Health Minister Etela Rajender claimed that the government has provided good quality PPEs to doctors, protesting JUDA doctors said the Gandhi Hospital does not have such personal protection equipment. “We do not have enough masks and other protective gear yet we are doing our duty. How can the government expect us to do our duties in such a high risk environment, how can the government expect us to work when we are being attacked by the very people whom we are serving? Corona is a serious pandemic. We have been protesting since the last 20 hours. But the government remains unmoved and did not make any attempts to talk to us. If the government expects us to combat the virus, first we need to be protected. Such assaults have created a sense of fear and panic among the medical professionals and could in turn impact the entire healthcare at a time when they are giving more than 100 per cent to help the governments fight the scourge of coronavirus,” said a protesting doctor. Following assurance from Eetala Rajender called off the strike.

This is not the first incident of assault on the medical staff by relatives of patients. On April 1, the brother of a corona positive patient who succumbed had roughed up doctors. Hundreds of people gathered outside the Gandhi Hospital and went on rampage by attacking the doctors and other medical staff.
While the attack on the doctors is a major issue, lack of facilities at Gandhi Hospital seems to be another worrisome aspect.

The facilities even in ICU leaves much to be desired,” these were the last words of Manoj before he had succumbed to Covid-19.

Telangana Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, who recently visited NIIMS to console corona affected doctors, expressed anguish over the spurt in the Covid-19 cases, especially among the medical fraternity. As corona cases were increasing exponentially, she wondered if the current strategy to contain the virus was enough and advised the government to evolve newer strategies to combat Covid-19.

In fact, several instances have been reported across Hyderabad and Secunderbad where medical workers have been infected with the virus. More than 50 PG doctors were tested positive for COVID-19, at least 40 of them are from Osmania Medical College. Doctors from Gandhi Medical College (GMC) also tested positive. At least 15 doctors and medical staff were tested positive in the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences. Several lab staffers, nurses and paramedics have also tested positive.

“I was not provided oxygen”, last words of journalist who died of corona

The Gandhi Hospital, designated as Covid-19 hospital, has failed to provide oxygen to 33-year-old TV5 crime reporter Manoj who had tested positive for the coronavirus a few days back and succumbed while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

“The hospital has failed to provide oxygen. Doctors and paramedic staff are not properly and adequately attending on corona patients. The facilities even in ICU leaves much to be desired,” these are the last words of Manoj.
Manoj also recorded the facilities or the lack of it in Gandhi Hospital while he was undergoing treatment. These visuals went viral and creating a flutter in social media over the treatment facilities in the hospital.

“The hospital management is thinking of shifting me to a private hospital” Manoj had sent the text messages to his well-wishers.

According to doctors, the journalist died of COVID-19 and comorbidities. He was suffering from bilateral pneumonitis and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). He was also diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis that paralyses all muscles. Manoj was married just about a year ago and was looking forward to the birth of his first child.

The visuals and the messages of Manoj before he died has exposed the inadeqency of Gandhi Hospital in treating corona patients. Patients and their family members are worried about whether the hospital has the capacity to provide enough oxygen to patients suffering from corona virus.

Manoj was suffering Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and oxygen is vital for patients of Covid-19 that mainly attacks the lungs and leads to dangerously low levels of oxygen in the body. When oxygen levels in blood fall, it can trigger cardiac and neurological problems.

Given that there is a spurt in corona cases, there is a critical need to maintain adequate supply of medical oxygen in the Gandhi Hospital which currently has 1,500-bed capacity and requires at least 1,000 oxygen cylinders per day.

As the state prepares for Unlock 1.0, Telangana on Sunday recorded the highest single-day spike in the Covid-19 deaths with 14 persons dying of viral infection in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of fatalities to 137. This is the highest death recorded in a single day from the State since the outbreak. The number of Covid-19 infections also touched a new high with 154 positive cases being recorded on Sunday, taking the state tally to 3,650 as doctors are working over-time treating patients.

With 100 patients admitted on Friday and 200 on Saturday, Gandhi Hospital has reached its full capacity. As on May 26, Gandhi Hospital was treating 659 Covid-19 cases. This number has reached 1,455 with 805 new Covid-19 cases admitted in the hospital in just 10 days. The pandemic is wreaking havoc by increasing the pressure on an already overstretched healthcare system. Gandhi Hospital currently has 1,160 capacity. The health Department has decided to allot 350 additional beds to Gandhi Hospital by expanding its infrastructure, taking the total bed capacity to 1,510.

Manoj sensational revelation has only exposed the shallowness of medical facilities in Gandhi Hospital.
