Godfather Worldwide Closing Collections – FLOP

Godfather film’s worldwide theatrical run has ended, the film has collected a distributor share of 55.80 Cr (excluding GST input).

The film is a flop at the box office. In Nizam area the distributor has lost heavily, It is a loss venture in the USA market as well . In USA , it was sold for 6.3 cr (6.70 Cr expenses) and collected only a 5.30cr share there. East Godavari buyer has lost money as well.

Remaining areas’ loss or breakeven cannot be calculated as it was distributed through own network of buyers

After the extended first weekend in the Telugu States, the film dropped big and never recovered from there. It has collected some shares thereafter but that ain’t enough for the expectations of the film. The film is a second consecutive failure for Chiranjeevi after Acharya.

The film is the third 50cr film for the hero in the 4 films that he has done post-comeback and that’s the highest among the Senior heroes along with Venkatesh (SVSC, F2 & F3).

Superstar Rajinikanth lauds God Father

Tamil director Mohan Raja was roped in to direct Lucifer remake featuring Megastar Chiranjeevi in the lead role. The film released on October 5th and everyone lauded Mohan Raja’s work. Superstar Rajinikanth watched God Father and he appreciated the entire team of God Father. He called the film excellent and very interesting. The film’s director Mohan Raja took his twitter handle to reveal the news. Mohan Raja said that Rajinikanth loved the changes made for the Telugu version of the film.

Godfather has a good extended weekend (5 days) worldwide with a distributor share of 46.50 Cr. After a good opening, the film sustained well on the following days leading to a good weekend in both the Telugu States and Overseas. The film is own release in the Telugu States except for Nizam where it is sold on an NRA basis. Theatrical rights of the film in the Telugu States are valued at 65 Cr. It needs to be seen how the film will sustain from today but generally films just crash after the Dusserah period.

Tollywood Financiers imposing new rules for Producers

Gone are the days when the Producers dominated the Financiers and Distributors of Telugu cinema. With a lot of cash crunch and financial crisis in the market post-pandemic, the financiers are now ruling Tollywood. Most of the producers depend on finances to produce films. Some of the financiers have closed doors after the pandemic and there are few options left for the producers. Tollywood financiers are now imposing new rules that are turning a stress for the producers. There is no chance of borrowing full finance for the producers like in the past.

The financiers are now ready to lend only 50 percent of the budget for the makers depending on the lead actor and the director. If there is any risk, no financier is ready to lend money for the film. Even Pawan Kalyan’s Hari Hara Veera Mallu faced a bitter experience and the shoot got delayed due to the financial hurdles. The shoot will resume this month as all the hurdles got cleared. This alone says that big films too are not an exception for the financiers. They are not ready to shell out huge money and land themselves in trouble.

Tollywood distributors too are not ready for big bets. They are ready to pay and release the films on an advance basis and there would be no non-refundable advances in the coming future. Megastar Chiranjeevi’s God Father too released on an advance basis in most of the territories of Andhra Pradesh. The calculations of Tollywood changed post-pandemic and the entire risk falls on the film’s producer. All those who are producing multiple projects should be extra cautious and calculative considering the market, business and other financial factors.

Godfather holds well on the second day as the film has collected a distributor share of more than 7Cr taking 2 days total to more than 20 Cr. The collections are 60 percent of the opening day (considering worth share and excluding hire centres) which is a good hold. The film now needs to hold today and score well on Saturday and Sunday as it will be hard for it to sustain from Monday going by the trend of the previous dasara releases.

Dasara Box-office: Megastar dominates the Show

On the auspicious day of Dasara, Chiranjeevi’s God Father, Nagarjuna’s The Ghost and Bellamkonda Ganesh’s Swathi Muthyam were released across the Telugu states. Both God Father and The Ghost shared a decent number of screens and Swathi Muthyam released with a lesser screen count. God Father dominated the show across the Telugu states. The word of mouth has been positive and the afternoon, and evening shows are packed all over. The Ghost opened on a dull note and the poor word of mouth did not increase the footfalls. Both The Ghost and Swathi Muthyam remained low all over and did not pick up by evening.

God Father remained decent all over and dominated the other releases. There was a clear impact of the new releases on Ponniyin Selvan and several shows are canceled because of the lack of audience. In some of the regions, the shows of PS1 are replaced with God Father. On the whole, God Father had a packed Wednesday and dominated other releases. Considering the Dasara holiday season and the stars involved, it was not a great Dasara for Telugu cinema.

After the debacle of Acharya, Megastar Chiranjeevi is testing his luck with a remake titled God Father. Mohan Raja directed a political drama that also has enough dose of action. The team says that they have made enough changes to suit the Telugu audience. Bollywood Superstar Salman Khan will be seen in a prominent role and Nayanthara, Satyadev and Samuthirakani will be seen playing other important roles. Thaman scored the music and Konidela Production Company; Super Good Films are the producers.Here is the complete review of God Father:

Story:

God Father is about BRAHMA (Chiranjeevi) the force behind the ruling party. As incumbent chief minister PKR dies, fight erupts within the party for the next Chief Minister post. Strong contenders for the next CM position are PKR’s daughter Satya Sri ( Nayanatara) , Jaya Dev ( Satya Dev) and Home minister Verma ( Murali Sharma). Brahma’s objective is to protect the JJParty and CKR’s daughter. Rest of the film is how Brahma and his rivals plan to take control of the state.

Analysis:

God Father Movie takes off with intense political drama and family feud around the chief minister’s family. Chiranjeevi role is characterized as a creator, and named after the same creator god.Brahma. Chiranjeevi is the invisible force behind the chief minister PKR family. After PKR death, PKR’s son-in-law Jaya dev tries to become the chief minister. Brahma intercepts and continuously foil Mr Jaya dev attempts. The bonding between PKR and Brahma has been established emotionally, but the growth of the Brahma as a force (Don) wasn’t established convincingly. The Dubai mafia support to Brahma, Masoombhai( Salman Khan) thread and international mafia dons’ meeting etc. scenes are not dealt well.

PKR’s daughter Satya Sri (Nayanatara ) is unaware of her husband Jaya Dev’s dark side. Under Jaya Dev’s trap, Satya Sri tries to make him as the Chief Minister. But, Brahma outwits Jaya Dev and how is able to make Satya Sri as the chief minister is rest of the story. Chiranjeevi’sBrahma characterization is a mixed bag. While it suits his age, the mass audience might not like the idea of protagonist being passively showing the heroism. As per the characterization Brahma is majority of the times shown taking back seat in the action than active. At some point, while Salman Khan Fights against the villains chiranjeevi is shown walking behind salman under his protection. Script wise this approach is absolutely fine but might be a negative with core masses. Last 30 minutes of the film is a clichéd one.

Overall, director Jayam Mohan Raja did a good job in balancing the remake and customizing to telugu audience. Konidela Pro production values are adequate, but the VFX work is poor. SS Thaman provides loud and mass appealing background score for Godfather. Nirav Shah Cinematography is good. Marthand K Venkatesh’s editing is adequate.

Performances :

Megastar Chiranjeevi getup suits his age, performance is subtle and Good. Satya Dev and Nayana Tara added solid performances and both are fantastic. Salman adds to the star power and it is nice to see both Megastars together on the screen. However, there is not much depth in his character. Murali Sharma, Sayaji Shinde got good roles. Puri Jagannath got a significant role as journalist.

Positives:

  • Mega Star’s performance
  • Engaging political Story line
  • Two mass appealing fights

Negatives:

  • Salman Khan’s scenes
  • Backstory Chiranjeevi’s Brahma character
  • Lack of typical chiranjeevi elements like Dance, comedy for his fans

Verdict:

Godfather stays true to the original with adequate tweaks to appeal to Telugu audience. Brahma’s role is tailor made for the Megastar Chiranjeevi, which he plays in efficient manner. Overall, if you like political themed films, Godfather keeps you engaged .
