Modi to inaugurate Hyderabad Metro on November 28

The Hyderabad Metro Rail will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on November 28 and will become the first metro in the country to commission the longest stretch from day one.

The 30-kilometre stretch from Miyapur to Nagole will be open for public use from November 29.

Urban Development Minister K. T. Rama Rao told reporters after a ride in metro along with some ministers, MPs, other public representatives and media persons on Saturday that the formal inauguration will take place at 2.15 p.m on Tuesday.

Modi along with Rao will travel by metro from Miyapur to Kukatpally, a distance of about one kilometre and back. Initially the services will operated be between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. but will be be extended from 5.30 a.m. to 11 p.m. depending on the traffic demand.

Rao, son of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, described it as the most innovative project and the largest metro rail project in the world Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.

He described construction major L&T as a valued partner who did exceptionally well to give final shape to the project L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (LTMRHL) has procured all 57 trains for the project from Hyundai Rotem.

To start with, each train will be operated with 3 coaches with 330 passenger capacity in each coach. Depending on the traffic, the coaches will be increased to 6.

L&T will announce the metro fares later Saturday or on Sunday. “The fares will be competitive with other metros in the country and as per the concession agreement,” he said.

The minister the project was not only an engineering marvel but was also a financial innovation. A total of 18 million square feet of commercial and real estate space will be developed near metro stations over next 15 to 20 years to make the project financial viable.

The advertisement revenue will also be leveraged. The 30-kilometre stretch has 24 stations. Rama Rao said the concourse level of the station can be used by all people for crossing the road.

He said skywalks will be also be built connecting the stations directly to commercial complexes, stadiums and offices. One such skywalk is proposed Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium at Uppal.

Rama Rao also launched a smart card for travel by metro and said that in coming days, it can be used for travel by different modes of transport like bus, taxi and autorickshaws.

Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) will operate feeder services to metro stations to provide end-to-end connectivity.

TSwarai, a mobile app, will be also be launched providing integrated transport solution to the people by metro, bus, taxi and other modes. Rama Rao sought cooperation of people in keeping metro clean and maintaining it.

The 72-km elevated metro project was taken up in 2012 at a cost of Rs 14,132 crore. While the construction period for the elevated metro ended in July this year, it could not be completed due to various reasons and the developer was granted 17 month extension.

The entire project, barring 5-kilometre stretch in the Old City and about 1 kilometre stretch between Hitec city and Raidurg, is now likely to completed by the end of 2018.

Telangana CM invites PM to inaugurate Hyderabad Metro

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the first phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail in November.

Rao on Thursday wrote a letter to Modi in this regard.

“Since the PM is participating as chief guest in the Global Entrepreneurship Summit to be held in Hyderabad from November 28 to 30, the CM requested the PM to inaugurate the Metro Rail Project (Phase I) during the period,” said a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office.

The Chief Minister, in his letter, stated that the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project was going to be a prestigious and biggest public transport system project in Hyderabad.

Rao pointed out that the Rs 15,000-crore project was the biggest project in the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode in the country.

He reminded the Prime Minister that an invitation was already extended to him on May 25.

The Hyderabad Metro Rail Project has been taken up on three corridors covering a distance of 72 km.

In the first phase, the section between Miyapur and Ameerpet, a distance of 13 km, and another 17-km stretch between Ameerpet and Nagole have been completed.

Hyderabad Metro completes toughest job

0

Hyderabad Metro announced the successful completion of toughest job in the entire stretch of metro line laying, the viaduct at Punjagutta junction.

Of the 85 odd traffic junctions in the city which needed to be crossed by the Metro Rail viaduct, which is like building 85 flyovers, construction of Metro Rail viaduct over Punjagutta flyover proved to be the toughest.  Being a busy location in the heart of the city with an already existing flyover, high volumes of traffic in different directions and the need for accommodating higher future traffic volumes posed several engineering challenges in the design and execution of the Metro viaduct at Punjagutta.

As already Punjagutta flyover was 23 ft high, the Metro viaduct was planned to cross it at double elevation at a height of 51 ft. from the road level. To allow future growth of traffic volumes, the central span over the existing flyover was designed as a 190 ft long span totally supported by high tensioned tendons (high strength steel strands) which are anchored to adjacent spans of 115 ft each on both sides. Thus a 420 ft long double elevated viaduct was planned as a three span in-situ construction.

without stopping the traffic of any direction (Banjara Hills-Begumpet direction traffic and vice-a-versa; Ameerpet-Khairatabad direction traffic and vice-a-versa) even for an hour, ground supported staging with wide gaps in between was devised, leaving enough carriageway for traffic flows at the road level and over the flyover during the construction period. In view of heavy traffic flows in all directions and possibility of a heavy vehicle hitting the ground supported staging, extreme precautions were taken to deeply anchor the support structures to the ground. Two layer protection with safety net was provided to prevent fall of any materials on the road users.

To give a beautiful shape and add aesthetic value to the viaduct structure and also to provide the required clearance over the existing flyover, arch type design was adopted for the viaduct. As the headroom available from the top level of the existing flyover to the bottom part of the Metro viaduct is only 21 ft, special type of shuttering and girder arrangements by restricting them to only 7.5 ft height was designed to get enough clearance (height) over the flyover for allowing vehicular movement during the construction stage.   After carefully arranging the support staging in such a manner, concreting of the viaduct, positioning and stressing of tendons, arrangement of bearings and removal of support shuttering were all carried out in nine stages over a period of four months.  The final product is an iconic Metro viaduct majestically crossing the existing flyover at Punjagutta and showcasing L&T’s engineering skills and talent. Appreciating the aesthetics of the sleek structure, the CM stated that Hyderabadis would surely be proud to see and enjoy the simultaneous movement of road vehicles at the road level and over the flyover and of the Metro trains on the viaduct.
