    Tollywood Crumbles to Half of 2018 in US – 2019 Half Yearly Report

    If you thought that it was only domestic market that nosedived in 2019 for Tollywood, North America hit altogether another level of low. The first six months of the year were able to bring in only $9.57 million to India from the states, which is less than half of what 2018 ($20.03 million) bring in. It get worse compared to 2017, as we are looking at close to one-third.

    Just like domestic market, the lack of big films and poor performance of big films was the major reason of this downfall. The success ratio was somewhat satisfactory at 20 percent, similar to 2018.

    The biggest hit of the year remain F2 which did phenomenal business in January. Maharshi is second biggest grosser but a loss venture for its US investors.

    Tollywood nosedives in first half of 2019 – Domestic half yearly report

    Lack of big releases, not so big performance of those released and Tollywood nosedives in 2019. The 66 releases, year to date aggregated ₹355 crore share against ₹485 crore during the same time last year. That’s almost 25% down and even worse in real terms with lower taxation in the current period.

    It was earlier mentioned in our Summer report, how lack of big releases led box office to suffer and that doesn’t look to improve anytime soon, at least not till release of Saaho, which if clicks, is set to do historic business.

    The biggest hit of the year remains F2 while the biggest grosser is Mahesh Babu starrer Maharishi, who delivered a Hit after 4 years. There were in total 9 films that can be termed as successes, accruing to 13 per cent success rate, which is not great but not as terrible as the previous two year’s 11 per cent.

    Maharshi grand success celebrations called off

    With the sudden demise of veteran actress and director Vijaya Nirmala, Tollywood is left in deep shock. Superstar Mahesh Babu’s Maharshi is named as the biggest blockbuster of the actor and some grand celebrations are planned to take place tomorrow. With the demise of Vijaya Nirmala, the celebrations are called off. The makers informed the same to all the buyers and the movie unit of Maharshi. Mahesh Babu will head to Jammu and Kashmir for the shoot of Sarileru Neekevvaru from the first week of July. Anil Ravipudi will direct this mass entertainer.

    Nani turns special guest for Mahesh Babu

    Superstar Mahesh Babu is left delighted with the super success of his recent outing Maharshi. The movie raked massive revenues and is named as the biggest hit in the actor’s career. The movie unit is all set to celebrate a grand 50 days event on June 28th in Shilpakala Vedika, Hyderabad. As per the update, Natural Star Nani will attend the event as a special guest.

    Earlier Venkatesh and Vijay Devarakonda attended the pre-release event of Maharshi as special guests. After that, it is Nani who is all set to make some noise in the grand success celebrations of Maharshi. The film is completing 50 days in 200 centres across the Telugu states and it raked over Rs 30 crores in Nizam alone. Nani who shares a close bonding with Dil Raju agreed to attend the grand event. Vamshi Paidipally is the director and Pooja Hegde is the female lead in Maharshi.

    Maharshi 32 days Worldwide Collections – All Time Top 5 & first 100 Cr for Mahesh

    Maharshi continued it’s good run in domestic markets as the film has collected a worldwide distributor share of over 99.5 Cr by the end of 32 days. The film has entered into Top 5 & set to go past the 100 cr mark. Maharshi will be the first 100 cr film for Mahesh Babu. The film has done well in Domestic markers except Ceeded & Nellore where it is a loss venture whereas it has done average business in Overseas with 2 cr loss to distributor. Overall Maharshi is a successful venture at the box-office.

    Vamsi Paidipally’s directional film Maharshi starring Mahesh Babu, Pooja Hegde in lead roles was released on May 9th 2019. Produced by Dil Raju, Ashwini Dutt & Prasad V. Potluri, the film has collected a gross of $1,888,000 in USA to become the third highest grosser for a Mahesh babu starrer and 16th highest of All Time for any telugu film.

    Coming to Profit loss details, the film has collected a distributor share of $1062,800 which comes down to $887,800 ie, 6.15 Crores INR after deducting the expenses like VPF & Publicity. From Non-USA markets it has fetched another 3.40 Crores INR, to make it a total distributor share of 9.55 Crores in Overseas. The film was sold for 11.5 Crores which means the distributor has ended up with a loss of 1.95 Crores. It can be termed as an Average venture with around 15% loss for the distributor.

    Summer biggie Maharshi has surpassed Bharat Ane Nenu and emerge as the career highest grossing film for Mahesh Babu. As the film is sold for exorbitant prices, distributors in many areas are yet to enter the safe zone. But, that doesn’t stop the makers of Maharshi from claiming it as an epic blockbuster as they continue to release posters to promote the collections. Yesterday, they have released a new poster announcing that the film collected 175 Cr gross till now

    Mahesh Babu’s wife Namratha Sirodhkar claimed it as the fastest film to touch the mark and expressed her joy through the Instagram page. Even Mahesh Babu has openly regarded Maharshi as his career biggest hit during the post-release promotions. It is very surprising to know what are they really trying to prove with these numbers as it is an open fact that the overseas and Ceded distributors are already staring at a huge loss as the film performed very badly in the first two weeks.

    Usually, Telugu films perform well in Summer season in domestic circuits and many big ticket films in the past emerged as box office hits despite very average content. Allu Arjun’s Sarrainodu and Ram Charan’s Racha are the best examples as they emerged as one of the top 5 grossing films at that time. They were profitable films for all distributors of the domestic market. But, that is not the case with Maharshi as it is likely to incur losses in areas like Nellore and Ceded.

    Despite being a loss venture in some areas of the domestic market and Mahesh Babu’s strong zone Overseas, Namratha and co are very desperate to promote Maharshi as the fastest film to touch 175 Crores. What exactly is the reason behind their desperation and What are they trying to prove?

    Maharshi 18 days Worldwide Collections – Set to beat Bharat Ane Nenu

    Maharshi after 18 days of it’s theatrical run has gone past 94 cr share mark worldwide. The film has continued it’s good run in domestic markets (except ceeded) while it continued it’s average run in overseas. It has emerged as Top 3 film in Nizam beating Rangasthalam which is a humungous feat. Hike in ticket rates , reduction in GST (compared to rangasthalam) has helped the film to achieve this feat. The film has achieved breakeven status in Nizam, UA, East and rest of India markets. West & Guntur area are likely to breakeven soon. Krishna is an own release. It needs to be seen if the film can breakeven in Nellore. Now the film is set to beat Bharat Ane Nenu (94.80 Cr) in a day or two & emerge as highest collected film in Mahesh Babu ‘s career.

    Mahesh to repeat Maharshi combo

    Superstar Mahesh Babu is left delighted with the super success of Maharshi. The film is racing towards the biggest hit in his career which is directed by Vamshi Paidipally. Going with the news, Mahesh decided to work with Vamshi Paidipally once again and he asked him to prepare an interesting script. If things fall in place, the regular shoot commences from 2020 summer. An official announcement about this will be made soon.

    Mahesh is currently on a holiday and will start working for Anil Ravipudi’s film from next month. Mahesh was in plans to work for Parasuram’s film after Anil’s project but he is said to have changed his mind. Mahesh decided to work with Vamshi Paidipally once again before Parasuram’s film. The actor will take the final call on Parasuram’s film soon. It is unclear if Parasuram will wait for the arrival of Mahesh or if he works for another project in this while. More details will be announced soon.

    Maharshi has a good second weekend worldwide taking the distributor share of the film to past 85 Cr. 11 days worldwide distributor share of the film now stands at 85.5 Cr. The film is now All Time Top 7th in Lifetime shares surpassing Srimanthudu. It will soon take down Aravindha Sametha and start aiming to beat Bharat Ane Nenu to enter All Time Top 5. The film is a breakeven venture in Nizam so far while it is a confirmed loss venture in Ceeded and overseas. It will soon breakeven in Rest Of India markets while it is a wait and watch situation for the remaining areas in Telugu States.

    The grand success celebrations of Mahesh Babu’s Maharshi took place in Vijayawada this Saturday. The whole team of Maharshi graced the event to thank audience for making the film a big success. Speaking at the event, Mahesh Babu recollected the days of his first film Rajakumarudu and thanked director Raghavendra Rao for introducing him. Talking about Maharshi, Mahesh heaped praises on three producers for associating with such a prestigious film. He commended director Vamshi Paidipalli for giving such a memorable film and thanked audience for making Maharshi a box office blockbuster and the biggest hit in his career.

    Director Vamshi Paidipalli is very much delighted with the success and said that the past ten days have been very memorable which made him forget all the hard work he has put in from the past three years. He thanked each and every artist and technician who worked for Maharshi. Pooja Hegde said Naresh is amazing in the film. She thanked director Vamshi for giving her this opportunity and for making such an amazing film. She said it really an honour to be a part of Superstar Mahesh’s landmark film.

    Maharshi helped me reconnect with my roots : Mahesh Babu

    Superstar Mahesh Babu is busy promoting his latest outing Maharshi which is directed by Vamshi Paidipalli. During his interaction with kids of HPS yesterday, Mahesh Babu spoke at length about Maharshi, his previous films and his journey in Tollywood. Mahesh said he in a happy space as there couldn’t be a better landmark film than Maharshi for him. He is very much thrilled with the box office success as it surpassed all his previous blockbuster hits.

    Talking about the concept of weekend farming, which is the main theme of Maharshi, Mahesh said he loves to do socially relevant films to send a strong message to audience. He expressed happiness for doing films like Srimanthudu, Bharat Ane Nenu and Maharshi as they have strong undercurrent social message. Sharing his experience on working with real farmers, Mahesh said it had completely changed him and also helped him reconnect with roots. He also revealed how important it is to create awareness among children about agriculture. Inspired with the novel initiative in Maharshi, the authorities of HPS have decided to encourage students to do agriculture.

    Superstar Mahesh Babu seems to be on a no – holds-barred approach for his silver jubilee film Maharshi. He has taken promotions very seriously and is going all out to take the film deep into audience even though it has completed one week. Mahesh was supposed to leave on a holiday with his family. However, he cancelled the foreign trip and decided to promote the film as better as he could to ensure that it holds well at the box office in the second week.

    Given the long Summer season and due to no heavy competition at box office, Maharshi has managed to collect good revenues in the first week despite mixed reviews and word of mouth. Now, the film need to perform well in the second week so that buyers enter the safe zone. So, Mahesh is going all out to promote the film by interacting with media and audience.     Maharshi has recorded career best week figures for a mahesh film worldwide as it has a collected a distributor share of 75.20 Cr. It is also fifth highest of all time behind Khaidi No.150. The film is doing good business in Telugu States and ROI markets but it is not the same with Overseas markets. The film has to collect 2.5 million in USA for breakeven and it has collected 1.555 Million Dollars till now.

    Maharshi has a good first week in Telugu States as the film has collected a distributor share of 57.50 Cr. This is the fourth highest opening week of all time behind Rangasthalam. After a good opening the film held good on monday and sustained well in the following days. Nizam is the best performing area for the film as it has recorded all time 3rd highest week only behind the baahubali(s). Ceeded is the least performing area for the film as the week numbers are not even in top 10 of all time.

    Ugly trend of releasing posters continue for Maharshi

    Just like how the producers of Bharat Ane Nenu and Aravindha Sametha released posters with inflated collections during their run , the makers of Mahesh Babu’s latest release Maharshi are continuing the unhealthy trend by repeatedly coming up with exaggerated posters.

    After claiming Maharshi as an Epic Blockbuster, the publicity team has now released a poster to promote the film as the highest grosser in Mahesh Babu’s career. This poster is now inviting a lot of criticism from audience and industry circles as it clearly undermines Mahesh’s previous hits like Srimanthudu. As per the trade calculations, Maharshi is yet to surpass the full run of Srimanthudu and Bharat Ane Nenu.

    Also, it is likely to be a loss venture in some of the major areas. Despite all this, Maharshi team is going overboard and belittling the strong success of Mahesh’s genuine box hit Srimanthudu. As soon as the poster was released, there have been numerous trolls in social media on the publicity team of Maharshi.

    After Rangasthalam, Ram Charan opened up about this ugly trend and assured not to release any posters for his next films to avoid controversies and needless exaggeration. Now, it is time for Mahesh Babu to come up with a similar decision for his next films.

    Mahesh @ Maharshi – Who will bell the cat?

    Maharshi, touted as prestigious silver jubilee film for Mahesh babu, is finishing first week at BO. Even though the film has opened to mixed reviews from critics (T360 rating: 2.75), the film has set the cash registers ringing for the first few days. This has rejuvenated Mahesh babu and ever since he has been on an ecstatic publicity ride touting the film as an ‘Epic Blockbuster’. Mahesh proudly raising collar isn’t lost on an avid movie watcher. Even his better half, Namratha, chipped in on Instagram celebrating the “success” of the film. But what is the reality? Is it really an “Epic Blockbuster”

    Let’s look at this both from content perspective and trade perspective.

    Content: At the outset it is very safe to say that this is a movie that has added nothing to his repertoire. The film is just a hodge podge of his previous hits with very ordinary music. You are excused if you find lot of similarity to Srimanthudu and Bharat Ane Nenu. Even there is nothing to write home about Mahesh Babu in this movie. He has done similar characters multiple times in the last few years. So what is there to celebrate?

    Trade: The movie has opened well due to summer and no there are no other films big or small in the horizon. Sita is postponed and so if you want to watch a movie with family currently Maharshi is the only option. Dil Raju used his leverage and got hiked prices for the film. Given all these advantages, Maharshi is faring decently in Nizam and is just OK in other areas. It is too early to tell, but current indications are the movie is going to be a huge loss maker in US and Ceded. Overall the movie might just get pass marks on trade front inspite of innumerable advantages it had.

    Is that the high bar that Superstar is setting for himself on a trade front? What is the point in rising the collar day in and day out when the movie is performing just OK at the trade and distributors in few big areas are staring at huge losses?

    Coming back to the title of this article, who is going to bell the cat? Who will give a real picture to Mahesh that everything is not rosy? Will PRO’s, who are all over media for writing facts, have the audacity to communicate real picture to Mahesh?

    Who will bell the cat??
