Maruthi gets a shock from Ram

0

Young actor Maruthi tasted a streak of flops and he bounced back every time in a crucial time. His recent outing Prati Roju Pandaage ended up as a huge money-spinner and Maruthi wanted to direct a top actor soon. With every actor busy with back to back projects, he penned a script for Ram. The young actor did not like the script and he rejected the script right away. The meeting happened over a call recently.

With nothing much to do, Maruthi is in the hunt for another actor for his next film. Ram too is looking for an interesting script for his next film after he completed his work for RED. Puri Jagannadh’s Double Ismart is the project in hand for Ram but it may not happen any time soon. RED’s new release date will be announced soon after the lockdown period gets lifted.

Maruthi’s family drama for Ram

0

Talented director Maruthi is an expert in directing minimum guarantee films. His comic timing worked big time for films like Bhale Bhale Magadivoy and Mahanubhavudu. His last outing Prati Roju Pandaage is a family entertainer and ended up as one of the biggest hits in Maruthi’s career. The latest update is that Maruthi decided to direct Ram in his next and the film is said to be a family entertainer.

Ram whose last film Ismart Shankar is a mass entertainer and his next release Red too is a mass entertainer. Ram wanted to do a family drama in his next and Maruthi penned a family entertainer that suits Ram. UV Creations will bankroll this project that will start during the second half of this year.

Maruthi’s market at Stake

0

Young director Maruthi proved his mettle and most of his directorials ended up as money spinners. But things are completely different when it comes to his films as a writer. He penned scripts and produced almost a dozen films out of which Prema Katha Chitram is the only film that impressed the audience. Maruthi has been badly criticized for his work after his recent outings ended up as disasters. Maruthi charged Rs 1 crore for penning the story, screenplay and dialogues for Brand Babu which released yesterday.

The film received poor response and Maruthi’s efforts have been criticized. He has been charging Rs 50 lakhs to Rs 1 crore per film for penning the script, but Maruthi’s directorial commitments aren’t allowing him to spend ample time on developing these scripts. His market is currently in stake with back to back debacles. Maruthi pinned many hopes on his next directorial Shailaja Reddy Alludu. If this film fails to recover the investments, Maruthi will have to prove his mettle once again with a small film to be back in race.

It’s high time for this promising director to restrict himself working on limited projects instead of signing all the approached films.

Perfect planning by Maruthi for Sailaja Reddy Alludu

0

Akkineni Naga Chaitanya’s family entertainer Shailaja Reddy Alludu has been wrapped up barring one song. The post production activities are also in full swing and the makers are planning to release the film in August.

Director Maruthi has executed his plans perfectly and completed the talkie portion of this family entertainer in less than 60 working days. He initially shot all scenes with remaining artists as Chaitu and Ramya Krishna are busy with their other projects.

He then wrapped up the crucial scenes between the lead pair and Ramya Krishna in a straight schedule.

The makers are super happy with Maruthi’s planning and the output. They are now planning aggressive promotions.

Anu Emanuel is the film’s leading lady.

Chaitu’s delay impacts Maruthi..

Young actor Naga Chaitanya has his hands full and the actor recently signed a series of films that are in pre-production. Chaitu started shooting for Savyasachi and Sailaja Reddy Alludu simultaneously. But the delay in Savysachi shoot disrupted the plans of Maruthi who is directing Sailaja Reddy Alludu. The makers of Savyasachi requested Maruthi and his team to wait so that Savyasachi shoot will be wrapped up on a faster pace. After wrapping up a small two weeks schedule, Maruthi and his team decided to wait for Chaitu’s arrival.

It has been 45 days and Maruthi is still left waiting for Chaitu to make his comeback. The actor who is currently holidaying in USA with his wife Samantha is yet to wrap up the shoot of Savyasachi. Sources informed that the entire shoot of Savyasachi is expected to be wrapped up by the mid of May and not before that. Maruthi who is known to be wrapping up films in quick schedules has been disturbed badly with the delay. Maruthi who has signed films for Geetha Arts and Indira Productions too will be delayed because of this wait.

On the other side, Chaitu already gave his nod for two young directors Ninnu Kori fame Shiva Nirvana and Bobby (multi-starrer with Venkatesh). Both these films are expected to start simultaneously this year and Chaitu revealed that he would be available from June. With delay in Savyasachi and Sailaja Reddy Alludu hardly completing shoot, the young filmmakers too will have to wait for the arrival of this Akkineni youngster. With nothing much to do, Maruthi is eagerly waiting for the Chaitu.

Maruthi pens a quirky character for Raj Tarun

0

Young and talented actor Raj Tarun is currently shooting for a full length comic drama titled as Raju Gadu. The tag line is ‘Yama Danger’. Sanjana Reddy is making debut as director with this film. Interestingly, director Maruthi has penned the story and dialogues for this film.

Known for penning quirky lead characters with bizzare behavioural traits like short term memory loss ( in BBM) and OCD( in Mahanabhavudu), Maruthi has written a similar character to the lead role in this film. It is learnt that Raj Tarun has a strange trait : he will steal things without his perception. The story line is weaved around this point and the film will be a complete laugh riot.

Amyra Dastur is the film’s leading lady. Anil Sunkara is producing the film which is slated to hit the screens for Sankranthi.

Happy we’re spreading cleanliness through our film: Maruthi

0

Filmmaker Maruthi Dasari is on cloud nine with the overwhelming response to his latest Telugu romantic-comedy “Mahanubhavudu”. He says he is thrilled they are able to spread the thought of cleanliness through their film.

In the movie, actor Sharwanand suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). He likes everything around him to be spotless.

“We believe the hero’s obsession for cleanliness goes in tandem with the Swachh Bharat campaign. We are happy we’re spreading (awareness about) cleanliness through our film. I feel like contributing to a national cause through my film and it gives me immense satisfaction,” Maruthi told IANS.

He added that he has been getting compliments from all quarters.

“I think we were able to take this thought (of cleanliness) through a powerful medium like cinema to the masses. A lot of people have appreciated the fact that the film offers more than just entertainment,” he said.

Released last week in cinemas, the film has struck gold at the box office.

With an opening weekend worldwide gross of over Rs 30 crore, the film has emerged as the biggest opener in Sharwanand’s career.

According to trade analyst Trinath, “Mahanubhavudu” is a festival winner.

“Amidst stiff competition from ‘Spyder’ and ‘Jai Lava Kusa’, which released for Dussehra, ‘Mahanubhavudu’ managed to strike big at the ticket window. It has clearly emerged as a festival winner, considering it’s a small film in terms of budget and scale,” Trinath told IANS.

Produced by UV Creations, the film also stars Mehreen Pirzada.

Chaitu – Maruthi film is about ‘Post Marriage egos’

Sithara Entertainments has announced a film under Maruthi – Naga Chaitanya combination. Inside sources revealed that the project was officially announced even before Chaitu and Maruthi discussed the story line. Even Chaitu clarified the same during the recent media interactions.

Now, it is exclusively learnt that Maruthi started working on the script for this film. Reliable sources informed that the film’s story is laced around the post marriage egos which are quite common in every couple’s life. The female lead’s father is a lawyer who carries the narrative forward. A prominent artist is going to essay this character. Also, it is heard that Samantha is not the heroine in this film.

Chaitu will commence shooting for Chandoo Mondeti’s Savyasachi after marriage. So, his film with Maruthi might start rolling early next year.

Mahanubhavudu Review : Quirky and humorous take on OCD !

2

Telugu360 Rating : 3/5

Story:
Anand(Sharwanand) a software engineer suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). He is fastidious about cleanliness and gets irritated with unhygienic things or behavior. His brain stops functioning properly and the behavior gets weird under unsanitary circumstances. Meghana(Mehrene) who likes hygienic men, joins as a programmer in the project managed by Anand. This like-mindedness between Anand and Meghana leads to friendship which in turn blossoms into love. Meghana’s father Ramaraju comes to city to have formal talk with his prospective son-in-law. An incident changes the course of events, leads to Anand temporarily moving to Native village of Meghana.

Being obsessive about cleanliness, how Anand survived in the village environment and how he drives his love to marriage is rest of the story

Analysis:
Hollywood cinema has been attracted by characters with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and there were more than a dozen notable films of this genre. However, this genre is less explored in south Indian cinema which is the subset of Indian cinema. A few years ago, there was a film named ‘North 24 Kaatham’ in Malayalam of this genre. In Telugu, this is first attempt where the Protagonist is suffering from OCD. This genre has ample scope to generate entertainment in films, without heckling the mentally disordered person.

Director Maruthi completely succeeded in writing a very intrinsic story around the character with this disorder, but partially in generating rib-tickling comedy. He took the approach of KISS (“Keep it simple, stupid”) design principle in writing, directing this love story of a person with OCD.

Mahanubhavudu film has situational comedy from the word go, but do not expect funny situations similar to as this director’s previous outing “Bhale Bhale Magadivoy”. Mahanubhavudu is adequately entertaining for all sections of audience though. In the initial phase director tries to showcase the symptoms of OCD, situations that a person with the disorder faces in day to day life and tries to generate humour out of it. Later the romance track has been nicely woven into OCD thread. A not-so-effective conflict point ensues and subsequently then second half runs with different i.e. village backdrop. With a discernible climax, this predictable Mahanubhavudu comes to an end.

While first half flows smoothly with entertainment, from the mid of the second half the story is clichéd and travels back to the 80s mode. Do we have any village now that picks the Sarpanch based on the outcome of a wrestling match? Scenes around this become too predictable. However, climax scenes of the film are good, thus aiding the audience to leave the theatre on a positive note.

Apart from entertainment quotient, songs are the vital strength of Mahanubhavudu

Songs Order :
Rendu Kallu, Mahanu bhavudavera, Kiss Me Baby, My Love is back, Bhamalu Bhamalu, Yeppudaina nee roopam.

  • Kiss Me Baby’ is a youth appealing one and the picturization stands out with trendy visuals
  • Rendu Kallu’ , ‘Mahanubhavudavera’ songs are classy.
  • Bhamalu Bhamalu’ track is aimed at mass audience and works fine.
  • Yeppudaina nee roopam’ is a melodious montage song on lead pair and family members also
  • My love is back’ is another a youth alluring lyrical melody with some cool dance moves

Technicians:
Every department has exceled at their job. The team work of editing, cinematography, music, BGM and direction is clearly visible on screen. Nizar Shafi’s cinematography is consistent and top class. Cinematography and color grading made this film look niche. UV creations production values are superb, each frame appears good, producers had spent money lavishly on songs. Music director S S Thaman has done extremely satisfactory with the songs as well as background score. Director Maruti has shown his narration skills yet again.

Performances:
Sharwanand is T fit as software engineer and lover boy. He acted with ease. His comedy timing is satisfactory in many scenes, but in a few scenes the effectiveness is diluted as he could not show required expression or missed the timing. Mehrene looks good and acted adequately. Nazar, Vennela Kishore, Youtube star Bhadhram as Jiddesh performed well. Director Maruti, Co-Producer SKN played a cameo in Bhamalu bhamalu song.

Verdict:

Mahanubhavudu is a decent entertainer. With a good first half and an average second half – On the whole it is a satisfactory and minimum guaranteed entertainment for comedy movie lovers. At the box-office , this film has opened well in AP-TS states and moderately in USA.

Maruthi and UV creations playing safe with Mahanubhavudu?

Young hero Sharwanand has scored hits by competing with biggies for Sankranthi 2016 (Express Raja) and 2017 (Shatahamanam Bhavathi) respectively. Is this the only reason why his upcoming film ‘Mahanubhavudu’ is being placed in the Dasara race even though two biggies: SPYder and Jai Lava Kusa are hitting screens?

Director Maruthi and producers UV creations have already announced that Mahanubhavudu will hit screens for this Dasara. In fact, they took this decision after both SPYder and JLK confirmed Dasara slots. Why are they so particular about festival release in spite of competition from two biggies? Even Mahesh’s wife Namratha had called them and requested to move the date, but they politely refused citing their own apprehensions.

They are concerned that Mahanubhavudu might not recover the investment of buyers if it was released in a non-holiday week. Mahanubhavudu was made with a budget of 12 Cr and producers are expecting no less than 15 Cr from theatrical rights. It may be recalled that Sharwa’s last film ‘Radha’, his immediate next film after a blockbuster ‘Shatamanam Bhavathi’, turned out to be a loss venture for its buyers.

Considering the result of ‘Radha’, UV Creations have decided to play it safe and release Mahanubhavudu during Dasara holidays only. It needs to be seen if Sharwa can withstand the heat from Mahesh and NTR’s films, and get away with a success amidst competition for the third time.

Babu Bangaram Review : Not a 24 Karat Gold

0

Babu Bangaram Review

Telugu360 Rating 2.75/5

Story :

‘Babu Bangaram’ is the story of a compassionate cop, ACP Krishna (Venkatesh). Unlike typical cops, he is very sensitive, even goes out of the way to help the bad guys as well. One day, ACP Krishna meets the gorgeous Sailaja (Nayanatara), who runs a mess. After realizing that her entire family is dependent on Sailaja’s income, ACP Krishna tries to help her. He also learns that her father is a suspect in a gruesome murder case. Sailaja’s father Sastry witness the murder of an IT officer, orchestrated and executed by the local MLA Puchappa (Posani Murali Krishna) and his friend mafia don Mallesh Yadav (Sampath). Typical Telugu movie plot has Sastry framed as a suspect.

Learning the Sailaja’s hardship and her father’s troubles with the law, ACP Krishna helps them out and brings the MLA and the mafia don to justice.

Analysis:
Director Maruthi, who was successful in developing situational comedy around the hero’s characterization in his previous movies, tried to repeat the same formula. His attempt to generate comedy based on ACP Krishna’s compassionate character (like the comedy with Nani’s absentmindedness in Bhale Bhale Magadivoy) wasn’t very effective. No proper story and mediocre screenplay do not help the movie. In earlier interviews, Venkatesh and Maruti have mentioned the movie to contain ample situational comedy. The reality is that a number of comedy scenes appear to be forced without any context. “30-years industry” Prudhvi stole the show in the first half. In the second half, Bramhanandam and Posani do their bit.

Director Maruthi didn’t take proper care to establish Venki’s character. Right after the interval, ACP was shown as a transformed person, from an easy-going and compassionate guy to a serious guy. And then again director, does comedy scenes on Venky.

However, Babu Bangaram doesn’t test your IQ levels. It is easy going on the audience. Venkatesh and Maruti tried to create a full-fledged commercial movie, however they failed to realize that at Venkatesh’s age it is really difficult to pull off. Also, there are no high points in the movie. Nayanatara’s role has very few scenes and her fans will be disappointed. Posani Krishna Murali excelled in his character.

Songs:
Mostly filler songs, could have been much better. ‘Mallela Vanala ..’, ‘Raaka Raaka vachindi…’ songs which were a chartbusters before release also look very good on screen. Sonam Bajwa’s special appearance item song which is also title song ‘Babu Bangaram..’ , in the second half is beautifully shot. ‘Tikku Tikkantuu..’ bit song was shot on popular TV show Jabardhast’s transgender actors and may appeal to mass audience

Positives:

· Story (Wafer thin) fits Venkatesh’s image
· End to end easy going movie
· Prudhvi, Posani characters
· In second half, couple of action blocks to cater Venky’s action image came out well

Negatives:

· Comedy scenes failed to generate any laughter.
· Songs could have been better
· Clichéd story
· Non engaging screenplay

Verdict:

Director Maruthi missed his opportunity to make it to big league. ‘Babu Bangaram’ is a kind of movie which you won’t regret either watching or skipping. At the box-office, movie can be a success in the B & C centers and will possibly generate a decent revenue in the A centers with the long weekend, catchy title and Victory Venkatesh’s image. In overseas, prospects of this movie are relatively grim. If you don’t mind a template comedy, watch it.

BBM : Non-stop Family Entertainer with loads of Comedy

[intro]Director Maruti creates a U-Clean film that will draw youth as well as family audiences, who  didn’t warm up to his earlier films. Natural Star Nani scores  the second super-hit of the year.[/intro]

It is quite rare for a director caught in trappings of making obscene and flippant films to outgrow them and make a convincing family entertainer. But that’s what this film Bhale Bhale Magadivoi is – an extra-ordinary family entertainer of 144 minutes with towering performances by a fresh starcast. If anybody had preconceived notions about Maruti as a film-maker who makes you laugh with silly plots and midnight masala gags, BBM is a revelation of sorts. Maruti has transformed his style of comedies to reflect refined tastes of a family audience perhaps due to the presence of Nani as the hero and Allu Aravind as the presenter. Yes, BBM is a non-stop entertainer that pulls out all stops to make you laugh and cry at times with vastly improved production values – and Nani gets his second hit of the year after Yevade Subramanyam.

The story is not new but the treatment is fresh and energetic filled with metric tonnes of humor that makes you ROFL. Lucky (Nani) is an agricultural scientist who forgets things easily. Not the variety that makes one a Ghajini or a patient of Dementia or Alzheimer’s but something that looks dangerous yet fleeting enough to retrieve oneself. Any task that is assigned to him or an appointment to meet gets messed up because Lucky’s mind gets diverted by some other thing when he is stopped in his tracks by some other thought. A good dimension to explore creatively – and Maruti makes capital of this aspect of memory-loss with a brilliant screenplay that stretches a normal love story weaved around Lucky’s character into a gripping story. Lucky falls in love with Nandana (Lavanya Tripathi) one day as a mind-diversion, and his life changes forever after that – with a prospective father-in-law Murali Sharma and his cute daughter Nandana. Lucky covers up the follies committed out of  his forgetfulness into virtues that get extolled by Nandana – which lead to many unintended hilarious consequences. The first half creates some Woody Allen-type comedy while the second half recreates Shakespearean touch of a comedy of errors with telling humor.

The story is predictable after the first half and lags a bit post-interval as the director beats it up to drive home the same point without newness. But the overall effect is, by far entertaining and packs unlimited humor without the grand-daddy-presence of Brahamandam. Maruti is known for a good sense of humor – and the film blends situational humor into the funny characterization of hero Nani as Mr Forgetful with a host of actors like Srinivas Reddy, Vennela Kishore, Praveen adding to uproarious laughter. Nani and Lavanya Tripathi sizzle as the lead pair with a good chemistry. But the actor who steals the show is Murali Sharma, as the father of Nandana. After spending almost a decade in Tollywood and doing many forgettable roles, lady luck smiles on Murali Sharma finally. Seen throughout the length of the film as much as Nani, Murali shines with his baritone voice and million-buck lines. This film will mark a career-turning point for him and we could see more of him in Tollywood.

[pullquote position=”left”]Nani has been treading the road less traveled so far – and this film will get his stock up again.[/pullquote] As a character with incurable forgetfulness, and yet loves a girl of his dreams, Nani plays many shades with ease, he is betting on movies with good content and this film proves he means business better than most heroes who still can’t figure out a good script from a bad story. Content is one thing, but content-management is another – Nani is becoming adept at sublimating himself to a good story with intrinsic content and a good starcast. In his last film, he let someone like Vijay Devarakonda steal the thunder. In this film, he makes Murali Sharma walk away with honors – how many heroes have this kind of guts? That’s why he is special. He can mint comedy, sadness and romance with equal confidence and have a swagger that doesn’t put you off – and this film is testimony to his versatility. However, one thing Nani needs to watch is the monotony that is creeping into his voice modulation. Most of his antics involving voice modulation are becoming banal because he speaks with the same volume without changes in texture. His experience as an RJ should let him build layers of improvisation on his voice culture. Lavanya Tripathi is quite fresh and cute in her demeanor and looks – and should give a run for money to many of the existing top-slotted heroines who cannot show nuanced emotions. [pullquote position=”right”]With a one-corner dimpled face and a vivacity that strikes you in all varieties of costumes, Lavanya can go places with her screen presence and sparkling expressions.[/pullquote] Sometimes glamor is not just over-exposure and overkill as the heroines make it out to be; Lavanya has rekindled the essence of a promising heroine. For both Nani and Lavanya, the color-coordinated dressing in blue color enhances their natural vibes with each other on screen.

Music by Gopi Sundar enhances the watchability of BBM. The man who composed the music for Bangalore Days gives a fresh music with a distinct sound  to Tollywood audience who are used to unimaginative music arrangements. In the quest for speed and rhythms, most music directors stopped using simple chords, chorus humming and traditional instruments in today’s songs. More so, they are not giving a chance to new voices. In the five songs which are all set in different tempos but simple melodic mixes, Gopi Sundar tries Mandolin, fusion music in the Endaro Mahanubhavulu and fresh voices like Renuka Arun. Despite the mix-up in pace of songs, ranging from slow to fast beats, nobody got up from the seat for any of the songs yet they looked fresh in choreography as well as visually. Mottamodati Saari is also rich and fresh-voice-rendered number. The range of music and the BGM scores suggest Gopi Sundar can go a long way, provided our success-seeking film-makers give him more chances. Cinematography by Nizan Shafi shows Maruti’s film in a totally different and respectable light. From the first film Eerojullo to now, Maruti has shown the most-stupendous transformation.

The director puts a disclaimer at the start of the film with an Alfred Hitchcock quote: “When Drama begins, logic ends.” Perhaps, he is mindful that some of the criticism can come his way for his treatment of the hero’s medical condition. As the drama gets into an overdrive, you get an idea that nobody wants to have hero Nani get examined by a doctor for any cure for his malaise. These days, your own smartphone can be programmed to remind yourself out of any situation. But nobody, neither his father or mother, or his lover ever get the thought to explore a cure for his mental condition or see a doctor. And there is no attempt from Nani to regroup himself for navigating life. It could be a multi-tasking addiction – this creates some contrived humor at times but the overall message is clear: Despite memory-loss and related problems, you can overcome everything with good ambition, the love of near-ones and a ray of hope for the future. Maruti has delivered this message with a subtlety and light-heartedness that will surely win him more family audiences than he ever got in his career so far. Commercial format keeps changing all the time but this film will stun all the critics of Maruti – he created one helluva of a family entertainer with an outstanding comedy touch. The climax scenes remind you of many recent Tollywood films but the grip continues almost till the end. Watch it with family  – it is going to be loads of fun and the best entertainment of the year so far.
