Wish more people would’ve seen ‘N.T.R: Kathanayakudu’ in hall: Krish

    0

After a turbulent 2018, Telugu cinemas prolific director Krish Jagarlamudi is now at peace with his creative faculties. He wishes more people would have gone to theatres to watch the first part of a saga about actor-politician Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, popularly known as NTR

“I had to complete two political period films. Actually, three, since there are two parts for the NTR saga. So I was working on three biopics one after another. ‘Manikarnika’ (which later Kangana Ranaut took over) and the NTR biopic in two parts. Now that ‘N.T.R: Mahanayakudu’ is finally out, I feel I can sleep in peace.

“I feel like a father whose three daughters are married. For the first time since I started shooting these films I slept peacefully for the whole night. Otherwise, I had forgotten the difference between day and night.”

The first part of the NTR saga “Kathanayakudu” under-performed at the box office. Krish is still in a daze over the outcome.

“I have no clue why the first part of the biopic didn’t do as well. Everyone who saw it, loved it. But not enough people went to see it in theatres. Now that it is on the Internet, I get innumerable messages saying how much people have liked ‘N.T.R: Kathanayakudu’. I wish more people had made an effort to see it on the big screen.

“The two parts of the NTR saga were designed as a big screen experience.”

Many feel the two parts should have been released as one film. But Krish disagrees. “It was not possible to release more than five hours of edited footage as one film. Nor could we cut down on the narrative width. This is not an ordinary man’s story. NTR who played Lord Krishna on-screen was actually revered as god by the people of Andhra. Making a film on his life in close association with his son (actor Balakrishna who plays NTR) has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life.

“I’ve come away a better human being. I hope audiences feel the same at the end of the film.”

Krish and his leading man Balakrishna did contemplate putting all the material together in one film. “We thought we would do a 5-hour film with two intervals, like Raj Kapoor’s ‘Mera Naam Joker’. But the idea was shot own. Today’s multiplex audience won’t sit through such lengthy films.”

“I am confident our film has a long shelf life. People will keep going back to the two-part biopic to know more about the only chief minister of the country who could take on Indira Gandhi.”

The second part has opened to encouraging box office reports.

Rationalising the disparity in the response to the two parts, Krish said: “The political atmosphere was heavily weighed against our film when the first part came out. Now the second part has come with no extra baggage. Audiences are watching it for what it is. An honest, unpretentious tribute to the iconic N.T. Rama Rao.”

On the reports in some section of the media that Balakrishna was unhappy with the end product, Krish called it as wishful thinking of those who can’t bear to see a collaboration so momentous coming to a happy fruition.

“There are people out there who wanted us to fail, wanted us to have a fall-out. Bala sir and I were one in our pursuit of a story that would do justice to the legend. This film couldn’t have been made without the active support of Bala sir. Our effort to tell the NTR story was blessed by god and the great man himself. Nothing could stop us.”

Krish Jagarlamudi too is a victim of NTR – Kathanayakudu

NTR – Kathanayakudu released during Sankranthi and won accolades and received top class reviews from all the corners. However the film failed to rake decent revenues which left many in shock. All the buyers across the globe lost hefty amounts through the film. The film’s director Krish too is a victim as he acquired the theatrical rights of NTR – Kathanayakudu for Guntur region for a price of Rs 6 crores.

He sold half of his share for a local distributor and the film collected close to Rs 3 crores in its final run. Krish finally lost Rs 1.5 crores through Guntur rights of NTR – Kathanayakudu. He pinned all his hops on NTR – Mahanayakudu and is in plans to recover the losses through the second installment. Else the talented director will be losing Rs 1.5 crores from his pocketed remuneration for sure. There are talks that NTR – Mahanayakudu theatrical rights are offered for the same buyers for free and the film will release during the third week of February.

Bunch of repairs made for NTR – Mahanayakudu

    0

NTR – Kathanayakudu released between huge expectations and ended up as a below average fare at the box-office. The result of this is said to impact NTR – Mahanayakudu and the makers are yet to reveal the release date of the second instalment. All the roles essayed by NTR have been shown in the first part and the audience will have nothing new to get excited in NTR – Mahanayakudu except the political drama.

The film’s director Krish is not in a mood to repeat his mistakes that he did for NTR – Kathanayakudu. Though the episodes looked interesting, it is the length of the scenes that killed the curiosity among the audience. With most of the shoot done, Krish is currently busy making the episodes crisp and sharp enough on screen. Krish was not convinced with some of the episodes which are shot again. NTR – Mahanayakudu ends abruptly after NTR turns Chief Minister but now NTR’s final rites and his last journey too are showcased in NTR – Mahanayakudu.

With lot of changes made, the film’s release has been pushed and NTR – Mahanayakudu will release on Febrauary 22nd across the globe.

NBK’s silence about NTR – Mahanayakudu

    0

NTR – Kathanayakudu carried mighty expectations but the film’s result left the entire unit in pain. Balakrishna is left restless about the film and he is spending busy time shooting for the second part NTR – Mahanayakudu which may release next month. Balakrishna who sounded quite confident and looked energetic on the sets of NTR – Kathanayakudu is completely different on the sets of NTR – Mahanayakudu.

He is said to have lost his patience, cool and sounded intolerant. Balayya who used to speak so much about the project with his friends and well wishers is maintaining silence about the film. The shoot of the film is currently in final stages and is expected to release during the third week of February. Krish is currently wrapping the shoot of NTR – Mahanayakudu.

No time to watch NTR biopic: director Teja

    0

It is known news that NTR biopic was originally started in the direction of Teja but later taken over by Krish. However the movie released during Pongal became one of the biggest disaster in the history of Tollywood.

Director Teja was asked to respond on NTR biopic movie by media today. Teja didn’t make any negative comments while leaving the project. Now also he didn’t make any negative comments but he told, he doesn’t have time to watch that movie as he is busy with his next project. He added that, he will respond after seeing the movie. When asked if lack of drama affected the movie result, he told, it’s the responsibility of the director to take care of such things.

Anyway, people as well as industry waiting curiously to see how second part of the NTR biopic, that is slated to release in February first week, fares at box office

Sankranthi winner – The return of Venky!

    0

Just like any other Sankranthi, this year too saw multiple releases in Tollywood, with all of them featuring big stars – Nandamuri Balakrishna starrer NTR Kathanayakudu directed by Krish, Mega Powerstar Ramcharan starrer Vinaya Vidheya Rama, and Victory Venkatesh – Varun Tej starrer F2 Fun and Frustration.

NTR Kathanayakudu marked the return of Balaiya – Krish combo after the hit movie Gautamiputra Satakarni, which succeeded at the box office despite clashing with Khaidi no 150 starring Megastar Chiranjeevi, and Mega Powerstar Ramcharan had returned onscreen after his non Baahubali industry blockbuster Rangasthalam, teaming with Boyapati Srinu for the first time in Vinaya Vidheya Rama and considering the results of their last outings, both these movies were expected to score big at the box office, appealing to their respective target audience. However, much to the surprise of the film fraternity, dark horse F2 Fun and Frustration has emerged as the Sankranthi winner.

All the movies released with a day’s gap between them, and the fourth release, the dubbed version of Superstar Rajinikanth’s Petta also opened with lesser screens. Though NTR Kathanayakudu, which is the biopic of the legendary yesteryear Superstar and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister NTR played by NTR’s son Balakrishna himself received positive reviews, the reviews did not translate to revenues. On the other hand, Vinaya Vidheya Rama opened to extremely negative reviews for its cliched making and was subjected to trolls.

In such a scenario, it was advantage F2, though the movie had nothing in its favor – Venky had the last release as a full-fledged hero way back in 2016 with Guru, which wasn’t a commercial success, Varun Tej wasn’t in form either, as his last release Antariksham was a disaster, the lead ladies, Tamannaah and Mehreen hadn’t been a part of hit movies of late as well. The only positive aspect ahead of the release happened to be director Anil Ravipudi, who had delivered a hat-trick of hits, all of them with out of form heroes – Pataas with Kalyan Ram, Supreme with Sai Dharam Tej and Raja the great with Ravi Teja, and yet again has extended his winning streak with F2 Fun and Frustration.

Despite having a wafer-thin plot, F2 has become the Sankranthi winner, thanks to several highlights. Firstly, the return of the family-friendly hero – vintage Venky, as the movie is typically a one-man show of Venky, with his unmatched comic timing, hilarious dialogue delivery, and funny body language, reminding the audience of his Nuvvu Naaku Nachav, Malliswari days. Secondly, the glam girls Tamannaah and Mehreen Pirzada brightening the movie with their hot presence, especially with the milky Beauty Tamannaah, surprising audience with her sizzling hot appearance, oozing oomph like never before, and just as the trailer had promised of a glam feast with the bikini acts of girls, Anil Ravipudi packed commercial elements and built an entertaining screenplay, while ensuring that the movie had glamour and humor in right proportions. Irrespective of Varun Tej playing second fiddle and scoring occasionally with his Telangana dialect and Mehreen’s slightly annoying acts, Venky’s terrific humor and Tamannaah’s sizzling glamour ensured F2 was a winner.

On the other end, the downfall of NTR Kathanayakudu and Vinaya Vidheya Rama too hugely helped F2 greatly. NTR’s main issue was that, the makers let out almost every looks of Balakrishna and every vintage classic reference/ getup Balaiya would be sporting in the movie, and that itself reduced the interest on the movie considerably, besides, the screenplay dragging without conflicts and Balaiya’s decision to play young NTR by himself too had a huge impact, affecting the repeat/suggestion value of the movie. The movie missed everything that another biopic released last year, Mahanati had – engaging screenplay and the surprise factors like looks of the central character.etc.Vinaya Vidheya Rama’s case was different, as the movie was literally a mashup of Boyapati Srinu’s crazy ideas in the name of heroism, that completely went wrong, with the train episode, the head chopping and even Kiara’s extremely objectifying entry episode making the movie an instant feast for trolls and negative criticism. Petta on the other end has been running behind Viswasam even in TN box office, while it’s literally nonexistent in AP/TG.

F2 has been having a golden run at the box office both in AP/TG as well as US box office, as it has inched closer to the break-even value of 34 crores as it has already collected 32 crores, and had become Venky’s second million dollar movie at US box office after Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu. With F2 achieving unmatched and unexpected success, consistent hitmaker Anil Ravipudi has already announced that there’ll be a sequel to F2, F3 very soon, with the fun-loving husbands Venky and Varun and their controlling partners Tamannaah and Mehreen returning on screen. So until then, book your tickets and go meet the F2 family on screens, rejoice the humor and glamour filled family fun entertainment and enjoy the festival with families!

NTR makers to compensate for NTR – Kathanayakudu Losses

Nandamuri Balakrishna took things prestigiously and produced his father NTR’s biopic which has been made in two parts as NTR – Kathanayakudu and NTR – Mahanayakudu. Directed by Krish, the first installment NTR – Kathanayakudu released during Sankranthi 2019 and received thumping response from all the corners. However the film’s collections have been quite low and the buyers are expected to end up in huge losses. Though the collections are expected to take a toll during the weekend, things of such sorts did not happen.

Now Balakrishna and his team are in plans to offer NTR – Mahanayakudu for free without charging a penny. The film will be released through the distributors of NTR – Kathanayakudu to recover their losses. The film is planned for February 7th release and is in final stages of shoot. Balakrishna is wrapping up NTR – Mahanayakudu which will be focused on NTR’s political journey.

US B.O : Solid start for F2, pathetic run for VVR and NTR Kathanayakudu

    0

Sankranthi big ticket films NTR Kathanayakudu and VVR are having a pathetic run at the US box office in the first weekend. Meanwhile, F2 – Fun and Frustration, the dark horse of the season which released today, took a solid start there with good number from premiers.

F2 is off to a promising start with $ 250K from Friday premiers. The fun filled trailers and teasers have generated a good buzz in overseas audience and resulted in strong advance bookings. Surprisingly, F2 has surpassed the first day numbers of Ram Charan’s VVR just with its premiers numbers. Venky’s craze among audience and Anil Ravipudi’s decent track record helped the film bigtime. The reviews and mouth talk are encouraging and the film is expected have a solid run in overseas.

Balakrishna’s NTR Kathanayakudu, which started decently with close to half million dollars from premiers, is badly under performing in the first weekend despite good reviews. By the end of today, the total gross stands at $ 707K. The film needs to gross more than $ 2.2M to break even and it looks improbable.

Ram Charan’s Vinaya Vidheya Rama is having a awful run as the total gross is $ 212K by the end of its first day including premiers. Despite scoring a blockbuster with his last film, Charan couldn’t draw decent openings as Boyapati Srinu factor and poor reviews are affecting the film bigtime. Going by its current run, it looks like the film will be one of the biggest disasters in recent times.

Tamil biggie Rajinikanth’s Petta has surpassed the million dollar mark ( Telugu and Tamil) by the end of three days.

NTR Kathanayakudu Update : Very Poor on Third Day In Telugu States

    6

NTR Kathanayakudu has continued it’s poor run in Telugu States as the film has collected less than 50 lakhs share on it’s third day. It has dropped 50 percent or even more in some areas from second day which itself was poor. Three days total of the film now stands at 9.25 Cr Share against theatrical rights of 55 Cr. The recovery is not even 20 percent so far and it will now be depending on Festival days (Mon to Thursday) to record decent numbers.

NTR-Kathanayakudu – Opinion by Sridhar Sattiraju

    2

The epic saga of South India’s most charismatic Chief Minister NTR and also India’s most colorful (and animated) politician in independent India’s history had lived a life full of trials and triumphs that went into ascendancy mode until he formed his own political party. When Nandamuri Balakrishna announced the biopic on NTR’s life, there were anxious moments and walkouts by other creative people. The movie got a momentum of its own once Krish Jagarlamudi took the responsibility of wielding the megaphone. After watching the first part of “NTR-kathanayukudu”, I must say Krish has not only directed it well but also gave it an evocative re-interpretation that will linger on forever. IN less than three hours, Krish spun a narrative without frills like a pseudo-narrator as in “Mahanati” to give us a glimpse of the Man, his first wife and the momentum that he created on silver screen with her prodding, growing from glowing self-confidence and intense self-belief and minting his magnetism on screen towards unprecedented material and later, political success.

What helped Krish is the vast material that is published (and still published) about the life of a man who pushed Tollywood to dream big and think big, experiment with multi-starrers, import superstars from other languages and even technicians like Shankar Jaikishan and C Ramachandra. Legions of memoirs by bureaucrats and contemporaries have given anecdotal evidences of the man, his personality and his driving sense of a self-fulfilling prophecy – in ways that only few others in cinema have done. It is tough for a family enterprise backed by NBK Films and actors from NTR’s immediate family to achieve a fine balance between hagiography and biography but to be fair, barring two or three scenes where Avatar-like greatness and godliness is attributed to NTR or his son, the film gives you a thrill of experiencing how a farmer’s son lived his dream with all the right moves and sagely advice to reach demi-god and godly status. There are at least three to four scenes that give you the goosebumps – when NTR dons the makeup as Lord Krishna, when he completes the day’s shoot even after hearing a bereavement, when he shoots for a full day for allowing the cinematographer to affix ten-headed Ravana shot, and so on.

Lacing these anecdotes with occasional humor to re-interpret NTR’s filmography before politics is not easy but Krish managed it well. He also walked on the razor’s edge in dealing with the subtle but unbridled rivalry between the greatest two-horse race in any Film Industry – NTR and ANR. Those episodes which marked their near-simultaneous entry and the decision to establish Tollywood in Hyderabad give you a celebratory high as they unfold. Since ANR family already announced they won’t be making any biopic in the unidimensional yet hugely successful life of ANR, those moments from the twentieth minute of the film when Sumanth appears as ANR to the time they both (ANR and NTR) light a cigarette together should be considered a well-considered mini-tribute to ANR as well.

Performance-wise, Balakrishna proved a chip off his great father in his portrayal as NTR despite ungainly body limitations and poor makeup (especially in the first half). One wonders why Balayya sported thinner moustache than even Kalyanaram (playing Harikrishna). He looked best as NTR in the second half, looking like a man possessed by NTR himself with all the swagger and passion. As a dancer, Balayya has been always rhythmic but to groove like NTR in “Vetagaadu” requires special talent. What Balayya lacked in the resounding baritone of his father, he makes it up with epic mannerisation of his dad as Duryodhana, Brihannala and Krishna in some of the scenes. While everyone tries to pull of their might, the ones who truly impressed in the starcast are Vidya Balan (as Basava Tarakam), Sumanth (as ANR), Daggubati Raja (as NTR’s brother Trivikram Rao), Kalyanaram (as Harikrishna), Prakash Raj (as Nagireddi), Sai Burra (as his makeup man Pitambaram) and Rana Daggubati (as Chandrababu Naidu). OF course, Krish the director re-enacts as KV Reddi garu (as in “Mahanati”).

While “Mahanati” the biopic tries to show the black, white and grey shades of what led to the rise and downfall of South India’s first lady superstar, “Mahanayakudu” shows the most empowering virtues and enabling drivers of NTR in ways that one can imbibe in our lives too – details about financial planning, expense control, respect for punctuality and work, respect for colleagues and women, ability to take feedback and seize initiative and take calculated risks and help people who helped you in the initial days. More importantly, respect for rivals and upstarts has been NTR’s trademark quality that made him different and sought-after. When you make a two-part series in NTR’s rich life, there are bound to be omissions on the degree of detailing and commissions on the episodes chosen to enhance his charisma and outreach for masses. For example, how NTR commissioned the best of experts in other fields like Nani Palkivaala etc to plan his estate, how he interacted with fellow superstars of other languages etc. could have also been touched to impart interest from other language audiences.

Music-wise, the best song in the album comes at titles and that leaves a void in the film’s relief moments – even if there is never a dull moment in the film. Cinematography is good but could have been better – that you can see the wig of Vidya Balan as a cancer patient is not acceptable in a film of this scale. In titles, the big mistake is to inter-mix graphical images of both Balakrishna as NTR and NTR himself in different roles. They should have stuck to NTR in full glory in his epic characterization of many roles to give a sonorous imagery of the greatness of the man in Kailash Kher’s voice and MM Keeravani’s soulful music. Despite these flaws, “NTR-Kathanayakudu” will be a worthy film for keeps and history buffs and for billions of NTR fans. Krish along with his writer collaborator Sai always gives an intelligent and subtle interpretation to any subject with all the seriousness and orderliness that it merits while bootstrapping the budget. Those lines about farmer’s woes, Tollywood’s impending greatness, the lectures to Savitri on money, what NTR believes about giving good films and entertainment (even if it irks his own teenaged daughters) tell you the kind of homework and subtle touches the writer-director duo did to the script. For all those efforts and the justice done overall to NTR’s personality in the first part, watch it with all those who adore him and who want to know more about him.

US box office : Average start for NTR Kathanayakudu

    2

The first part of much anticipated NTR biopic titled as NTR Kathanayakudu released today amidst great fanfare and expectations. The film opened to decent reports in overseas and Telugu states.

The Krish directional, which is expected to take a solid opening in overseas, managed to get only an average start from Tuesday premiers. As per the latest trade reports, the film grossed around half million dollars from its premiers and emerged as the best opener for both Balakrishna and Krish by surpassing their previous highest Gauthamiputra Satakarni ( $ 375K). However, it is considered an average start as trade analysts predicted a much better start due to the strong buzz among audience and because of crazy Tuesday ticket offers.

The film needs to perform well over the weekend to break even in overseas. Balakrishna’s stupendous performance and Krish’s rich presentation are the biggest strengths of the film despite its slow paced narration.
