Reportedly, director Sukumar is impressed with Pooja’s energy levels in Duvvada Jagannadham and roped in her for a peppy song in this film.

The special song will add oomph factor to the period love story which also stars Samantha in an important role. Both Charan and Pooja will dance for this song in a special set that will be erected very soon. The regular shooting is progressing at a brisk pace and the makers are planning to release the film early next year.

Actress Pooja Hegde, model Lopamudra Raut and actress Nia Sharma are set to walk the ramp for the Mumbai edition of India Kids Fashion Week (IKFW) Season 5.

After its Delhi edition, IKFW, an initiative of Event Capital (a Laqshya Media Group Company) and Craftworld Events, will arrive here this weekend.

While Pooja will walk the ramp for Nimbus, Lopamudra will turn showstopper for BIBA Girls. Nia will hit the ramp for Fycon Troupe.

Story :

Jagannadha Sastry (Allu Arjun) is a traditionally brought up brahmin who lives in Vijayawada, working alongside his family managing a food catering business. A visit to Hyderabad puts Jagannadham in a violent situation resulting in him helping an honest police officer at the cost of killing some goons. Moving forward, Jaganndham wraps himself in the concepts of ‘Dushta Sikshana’ and his grandfather’s philosophy of ‘Manam chese manchi pani kanapadali gani, manam kanapadakkarledhu’, as he turns into ‘DJ’ – a vigilante anonymously attacking and killing anti-social elements.

The antagonist to DJ’s protagonist is Royyala Naidu (Rao Ramesh), a highly influential real estate kingpin. Royyala Naidu’s most atrocious crime is cheating the citizens of 9K Crores under the ‘Agro Diamond’ scam. The movie plot revolves around the conflicts between DJ and Royyala Naidu as they try to unmask & destroy each other in pursuit of upholding justice (DJ) and rampant spread of corruption (Royyala Naidu).

Analysis :

The movie sets out on a positive note with the Director Harish Shankar establishing the lead character, all the way from Jagannadha Sastry’s childhood influences to his transformation into DJ. OK scenes between the female lead Pooja Hedge (a fashion designer) and Sastry, a couple of well written double entendres (Harish’s skill as a writer comes thru here, as he manages to be effective while avoiding to sound vulgar) are included in the first half as it ends with an interesting fight. Proper usage of commercial elements, such as a near comical introduction for Sastry and stylish and full blown attitude introduction for DJ, result in a convincing and entertaining first half.

Songs in the first half ‘Sharanam Bhaje Bhaje…’, ‘Mechuko Mechuko..’ and Gudilo Badilo Madilo Vodilo are just OK. While ‘Sharanam Bhaje Bhaje…’ showed Allu Arjun in some interesting dance moves, it is disappointing to note that the super hit song ‘Gudilo Badilo ….’ did not meet the expectations both in terms of locations and choreography. There are two songs ‘Box Baddhalu ayipoye..’ , ‘Seeti Maar..’ in the second half with ‘Seeti Maar..’ definitely the best song in the film.

The disappointing second half of the movie suffers from the makers idea to end it on a lighter note instead of with a serious climax. An intentional comedy morphs into an irritating one as Allu Arjun and Subbaraju are shown in conversation with their parents’ souls. Clearly the director failed to understand that if told in a convincing manner, the audience would accept a routine/serious action filled climax. Furthering the train wreck of a second half are the lengthy and heavy on bloodshed fights in the middle of nowhere, no doubt a mistaken attempt to appeal to the mass audiences.

Any movie lover will agree with the simple fact that, the hero’s heroism elevates in the presence of a strong villain. Royyala Naidu, a rich, ruthless, shrewd businessman, is established as a very strong villain, one who has the power to even dictate the state politics. And yet, instead of cashing on this to further elevate DJ, the director has shown in climax Subaraju talking to his mother’s soul and with his father, a single scene that breaks the movie tempo as the strong villain characterization comes crashing down. A communion with the departed souls – more like a mockery of the audience’s intellect.

Performances :

True to his trademark, Stylish Star Allu Arjun looked good as DJ. His role as Jagannadha Sastry is good as well. His performance when his family is under threat is the best.

Pooja Hedge is super gorgeous, this is a perfect comeback for her. Amazing physique and dance skills should hopefully get her some offers pending the movie’s success. Rao Ramesh is good, especially as Royyala Naidu is shown with similar vibes as his father’s character in Muthyala Muggu. Vennela Kishore, in a stereotype role is OK. Subbaraju and Posani are OK, failed to gather laughs.

Technical Department :

DeviSri while he excelled on the background score, fell short on the songs. Photography by Avananka Bose is OK – nothing special. Good production values from Producer Dil Raju as this film is their milestone (25th) one . Perhaps a little more money on the songs could have helped. Dialogues from Harish are very good, would have better complimented the movie had the second half been better.

Positives :

  • First half commercial elements.
  • Harish Shankar’s dialogues.
  • Allu Arjun histrionics, decent performance
  • Seeti Maar, Asmaika Yoga songs.
  • Pooja Hedge’s glamour
  • Choreography and Allu Arjun in Sharanam Bhaje & Seeti Maar songs.
  • Double meaning dialogues are smartly written and instant super hits: “ Kaallaki socks ye vesukonu…..” , “Okkanne entha sepu selfies …….. ?” “Venkaayamma ….”

Negatives :

  • Climax – an attempt at comedy gone horribly wrong resulting on one of most ridiculous climaxes in recent times.
  • Lack of any novelty in story
  • Weak second half
  • Touted as a comedy film, the movie did not evoke much laughter

Verdict :

Good dialogues can only do so much to help a mediocre script with average execution.Duvvada Jagannadham is a one-time watch for masses and Allu Arjun fans. For families, there are occasional fun moments, but that’s about it. At the Box-Office, Duvvada Jagannadham opened well, may end up as above average in India and lesser than average in overseas markets.

Really challenging to make good commercial film: Harish Shankar

Filmmaker Harish Shankar, best known for delivering blockbuster Telugu films such as “Gabbar Singh” and “Subramanyam For Sale”, believes it’s really challenging to make a good commercial film.

“Writing and making commercial cinema is very challenging. You need to be sure of what will work with the masses and what doesn’t. Every second needs to be written in a way that it appeals to the audience,” Harish told IANS.

His latest film “Duvvada Jagannadham” aka “DJ”, starring Allu Arjun in the lead, is slated for release on Friday.

Harish said “DJ” pushed him as a writer and director within the commercial space.

“It changed the way how the template of commercial cinema is treated. In most commercial films, when we reach the climax we know the hero will emerge victorious. We know that it will end with an action bang. The climax of ‘DJ’ will surprise audiences,” he said.

“As a writer, I have treated the dialogues differently and have not relied solely on punch lines. Also, in commercial cinema, the focus is usually on the hero. In ‘DJ’, I have shifted focus on other key characters as well and they all have shined in their roles,” he added.

On working with Arjun, with whom he has teamed up for the first time, Harish said it was “inspiring”.

Arjun plays a Brahmin cook in the film, which also stars Pooja Hegde.

“His hard work is very inspiring and it in turn motivated me to push harder. After I told him about his character, he started interacting with Brahmin priests and cooks. We shot for 110 days and there was never any dip in his dedication level throughout the course of the shoot. On most days, even after we packed up, he’d sit and discuss scenes for the next day,” he said.

Working on ‘DJ’ has been fulfilling: Pooja Hegde

Actress Pooja Hegde, last seen in Ashutosh Gowarikers “Mohenjo Daro”, says she had a fulfilling experience while working in the upcoming Telugu entertainer “Duvvada Jagannadham” aka “DJ”.

“I thoroughly enjoyed shooting for ‘DJ’ and the experience has been very fulfilling. As an actor, it’s essential a film does well, but its fate is not in our hands. What’s more important are the memories you make while working on each project,” Pooja told IANS.

She said: “You spend nearly six months on a project. You leave everything and stay with people you don’t even know. If you don’t enjoy working with them, nothing else really matters. You need to find a family in the people you work with. I’m glad I found a family in ‘DJ’.”

Having mostly played the homely, girl-next-door girl in her Telugu films so far, Pooja has upped the glamour quotient in “DJ”.

“Unlike my simple and good looking avatars so far, I have played a very glamorous role. It’s the kind of character that helped me grow as an actor,” she said, heaping praise on co-star Allu Arjun.

“He is like a rubber man… someone who can dance phenomenally and he does it with certain swag. I always end up working with great dancers. It was Hrithik (Roshan) last time and now Arjun,” she said.

“Each time I saw his dance portion, I’d call him and say how he nailed every step. I would tell him jokingly that I have to take extra dance lessons just to match his performance. He is a very friendly and honest co-star,” she said.

Directed by Harish Shankar, the film is slated for release on Friday.

On working with Harish, Pooja said: “He is the funniest director I have ever worked with. You take any behind-the-scene photograph and you’d find us – Harish, Arjun and I – laughing and goofing around. We had so much fun shooting.”

Pooja says Harish is very easy to work with.

“He is the kind of director who doesn’t mind when you tell him something. He will try and convince you but if your opinion genuinely helps a film, he’d be willing to accept it. A lot of directors don’t give this freedom,” she added.

Music sensation Devi Sri Prasad has set very high expectations on the album of Duvvada Jagannadham with two energetic numbers that were unveiled few days back. Let’s now see what he has in store with the complete album.

The album begins with the title track DJ…DJ which is heavy on Sanskrit lyrics that extol the hero as the saviour. The energetic vocals by singer Vijay and the impeccable lyrics penned by Jonnavithula have been backed by a hard-hitting composition from DSP. The DJ..DJ war cry stands out as the best part of this energetic number.

Verdict :

All in All, DSP has come up with a complete commercial package for DJ. Special plans for DJ trailer launch tomorrow

Allu Arjun’s Duvvada Jagannadham is generating a lot of buzz among audience, thanks to the two chart buster songs composed by Devi Sri Prasad. On the trade front, the film has already done a record business in Telugu states. To further the hype on the film, the makers have decided to unveil the trailer tomorrow.

According to the latest reports, the trailer will be unveiled tomorrow in a grand way during a special event which will be graced by all directors who worked under DJ producer Dil Raju’s banner. The event will take place in Hyderabad tomorrow afternoon. The impressive teaser which was released a couple of months ago clocked millions of views and increased the expectations on the film.

The shooting is on the verge of completion and the film is set for grand release on June 23rd. Pooja Hegde is the leading lady and Harish Shankar is the director.

Controversies Rife on DJ’s Second Song

Allu Arjun is all set to thrill the audience as a Brahmin cook in his upcoming movie Duvvada Jagannadham. Directed by Harish Shankar, the film is said to be a action thriller with Bunny essaying two different roles. The makers unveiled two songs from the film and the second single ‘Asmaika Yoga Tasmaika Boga’ landed the film into controversies. Some of the lyrics from the song have been objected by a section of Brahmins and a complaint has been registered with the Censor Board.

The protestors wanted strict action to be taken and some of the objectionable lyrics should be removed from the song. However the makers are yet to respond on this issue. The shoot of Duvvada Jagannadham is in final stages and the songs are being canned. Devi Sri Prasad is composing the music and Pooja Hegde is the female lead. Produced by Dil Raju on Sri Venkateswara Creations, Duvvada Jagannadham is all set for June 23rd release.
