Mann announces 300 units of free power in Punjab

1

Fulfilling its major pre-poll promise, the Aam Aadmi Party’s government in Punjab led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday announced 300 units of free electricity from July 1 in Punjab.

Addressing the newly recruited officers and employees of Punjab State Transmission Corporation (PSTCL) at a function here, Mann said the government would provide 600 units of free electricity to every household every two months.

The Chief Minister said the rates of industrial and commercial units would also not be hiked, besides continuing free electricity for the agriculture sector.

Mann further announced to waive off bills up to 2 KW load till December 31, 2021. He said Punjab would be the second state after Delhi to provide free power to the people in the country.

Mann said Punjab despite being the power producing state it was not still able to provide free or cheaper electricity to the people due to the wrong agreements done by the previous governments.

“There are still some hiccups in providing cheaper and free electricity to the people such as transmission losses, coal issues and some legal issues which his government is working to sort out,” added the Chief Minister.

He also said his government is committed to provide the cheapest electricity to the commercial and industrial sectors in the country which would also be fulfilled.

The Chief Minister listed out major achievements of his one month such as anti-corruption action line, anti-gangster task force, 25,000 new job announcements, delivery of ration to the houses, regularisation of services of 35,000 contractual employees and one MLA, one pension, etc.

He said NRIs want to pay back due to their love for their motherland and his government has been able to build trust of NRIs in just one month.

“The NRIs are approaching this government to contribute to the development of the state as they know that their money would be spent for the development purposes in the real sense.”

Rahul declares Channi as Congress CM face for Punjab polls

0

Just two weeks ahead of Assembly polls in the Congress-ruled Punjab, party leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday announced incumbent Charanjit Singh Channi as the party’s chief ministerial face for the polls.

State party chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was in the race, hugged Channi on the stage as Gandhi announced his name after over 45 minutes of his speech, televised across the 117 Assembly seats.

Political observers believe the decision of the Congress to go to the polls in the state, which is witnessing a five-cornered contest, under the leadership of Channi, the state’s first Dalit Chief Minister, is to woo the Dalit Sikh votes that are 32 per cent in the state.

“It is Punjab’s decision. It is not my decision. I didn’t decide. I asked workers, candidates, MLAs, people, youth of Punjab. What people said has led me to my final decision,” said Gandhi during his address at the ‘Aawaz Punjab Di’ virtual rally.

He praised Channi for his humble background.

Getting emotional on the announcement of his name, Channi said that he has always been honest, never took a penny from anyone, and will continue to work honestly.

The Congress announcement of the CM’s face came after the AAP declared comedian-turned-politician Bhagwant Mann as its Chief Ministerial candidate.

The Congress high command was cautious about announcing the name as it has the potential to create trouble for the party.

In the 2017 Punjab Assembly polls, ending all speculation with just a week to go before the election, then party Vice President Rahul Gandhi had announced that Amarinder Singh would head the government if the Congress was voted to power.

This time the key opponents in the state — the AAP, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) combine and the BJP in alliance with Amarinder Singh’s new party Punjab Lok Congress and the Samyukt Samaj Morcha, the fledging coalition of farm unions — are making an issue out of the Congress CM’s face.

Now the prominent faces for the parties are Channi, 58, Mann, 48, Sukhbir Singh Badal, 59, Amarinder Singh, 80, (his name not announced by the alliance), and Balbir Singh Rajewal, 78.

17 die in violence after Dera chief is held guilty of rape

Dera, Ram Rahim Singh

At least 17 people were killed on Friday as security forces fired at rampaging mobs in Panchkula town in Haryana after a court held self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh guilty of rape and sexual exploitation. The violence also gripped parts of Haryana and Punjab, leaving more than 200 people injured.

Curfew was imposed in Mansa, Bathinda, Patiala, Fazilka and Ferozepore towns in Punjab as supporters of the Dera Sacha Sauda chief who had been waiting anxiously for days for the verdict by a CBI special court went on a violent spree. Panchkula town in Haryana, which adjoins Chandigarh, resembled a war zone in no time.

The Army was called out in 10 places in Punjab.

It all began when CBI special judge Jagdeep Singh held the controversial sect leader, who has lakhs of followers mainly in Punjab and Haryana, guilty of raping and sexually exploiting two female disciples in 2002. The sentence will be pronounced on Monday.

As the 15-year-long court battle ended, the sect chief was taken into custody. Soldiers deployed earlier rushed to the court and took charge. After a quick medical examination, the so-called godman was flown to a jail in Rohtak in Haryana.

Ram Rahim Singh stood in the court with his hands folded in prayer and his eyes closed when the judge started reading the verdict. The tens of thousands of supporters massed outside and who initially thought he would be let off first became gloomy — then furious.

Even though the verdict was announced amid unprecedented security and thousands of police as well as paramilitary forces were deployed outside, the mobs took over the streets in no time, setting fire to scores of vehicles and buildings.

Panchkula residents told IANS on telephone that the crowds had invaded and tried to set fire to a bakery, a cinema theatre and a hotel besides torching scores of cars and two-wheelers. Residents shut themselves inside their homes.

Initially, the vastly outnumbered security forces fled from the mobs as they were attacked along with journalists. Some journalists took shelter in nearby houses to escape the mob fury.
The security forces then opened fire, killing 17 demonstrators.

More than 200 people, including security personnel and journalists, were injured in the mayhem. The dead, bleeding and with bullet wounds, collapsed on the roads, witnesses said. Panchkula looked like a town under siege, plumes of black smoke rising into the sky.

Hours later, Haryana Director General of Police B.S. Sandhu said: “Panchkula is now 100 per cent safe.”

Attempts were made to burn two railways stations in Punjab’s Malout and Mansa towns. An electricity office in Sangrur town was set on fire. Two Income Tax department vehicles were also torched in Mansa.

In Sangrur, a tehsil office in Lehragaga town went up in flames. In Lambi town in Muktsar district also in Punjab, masked men lobbed petrol bombs on a telephone exchange and fired into the air to trigger panic.

Across Haryana, traders lowered the shutters of shops in most towns.

Security of Rohtak town was handed over to the Central Reserve Police Force. The town was also at the centre of widespread Jat agitation violence in February last year.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar appealed to the people to maintain calm.

In Delhi, where two empty train coaches and two buses were set on fire, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made a similar appeal.

Amarinder Singh said: “Our forces are prepared to check any violence.” He said the Army was called out in 10 places. Soldiers did a flag march in Zirakpur and Banur towns, located close to Panchkula.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke with both Khattar and Amarinder Singh and assured them all help to bring the law and order under control.

Radio Ceylon and Vividh Bharathi repeatedly broadcast the songs in 1974-75.

Lava Kusha was directed by CS Rao and C Pullayya and written by Samudrala Raghavacharya. The blockbuster film won National Film Award and Best Feature Film in Telugu for the year 1963.
