High Court shock to Dr. Ramesh Babu in Swarna Palace case

1

The High Court of Andhra Pradesh has allowed custodial interrogation of Dr. Ramesh Babu of Ramesh Hospitals in the fire mishap case. Over 10 patients died in the fire mishap that took place at the Swarna Palace Covid Centre run by Ramesh Hospitals. The court heard both sides’ arguments here and allowed the police interrogation finally.

Now, Dr. Ramesh would be questioned at the Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police at the latter’s office from November 30 to December 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The court asked the police officials to take all precautionary measures in view of the Coronavirus infections.

The Swarna Palace fire tragedy took place on August 9 in Vijayawada. The police investigation was still continuing. Over 10 patients were dead and 20 others were injured in the incident. As the case took a political twist, Ramesh Hospitals Managing Director Dr. Ramesh Babu went absconding for some time.

The hospital’s management had also approached the court for relief from the police investigation citing reasons of the deliberate harassment on the part of the Government. Though they took prior approvals for running the Covid Centre, the Government launched persecution against them out of political and caste reasons.

Supreme Court bars arrest of Dr Ramesh Babu

2

The Jaganmohan Reddy Government has taken it as a prestige issue to arrest Dr. Ramesh Babu, managing director of the Dr. Ramesh Hospitals, in the Swarna Palace fire case. It has even gone to the Supreme Court seeking stay on the High Court’s orders against further probe into the palace fire till further orders.

Now, the Supreme Court has lifted the High Court stay on the investigation but at the same time, it barred the State Government from unilaterally taking Dr. Ramesh Babu into custody for questioning. However, the High Court may take a decision on this.

The Supreme Court allowed the State Government to go ahead with investigation into the Swarna Palace fire. It has not taken into consideration the AP Government’s contention that Dr. Ramesh Babu has been absconding without cooperating with the investigation. All those matters may be placed before the High Court which can take a final decision on that.

Mukul Rohatgi, who has been arguing the CM’s personal cases, has once again argued for the AP Government on the Swarna Palace fire tragedy which led to the death of 10 Covid patients. Dr. Ramesh Babu has got a relief for now but it is not sure how the AP Government’s investigation will give new twists in future.

Ramesh Hospital denies role in Covid centre management

1

The AP Government has filed cases against the Ramesh Hospitals and the Swarna Palace management for the death of 10 persons in fire mishap at the Covid Centre. Now, the management of Ramesh Hospital came out with a clarification that it has no role to play in the maintenance or management of the hotel building premises. The Hospital management asserted that it was only concerned with providing health services and timely treatment to the infected patients.

The Ramesh Hospital further stated that their own hospital premises was fully converted into Covid centre at the orders of the District Collector. As the bed strength was not enough to meet emerging cases, they gave services at Swarna Palace Covid Centre. This was done with approval of the Government and at the rising demand from the patients. As such, they had nothing to do with the daily management of the centre.

The latest statements gave rise to concerns whether there was any proper coordination between the officials, the hospital and the hotel management. Once health services started at a hotel premises, the entire nature of services would change. Based on the needs of patients, facilities would have to be created and maintained. Questions were now being raised whether there was negligence in storing disinfectant solutions which were being used in considerable quantities in order to keep the entire premises safe. Reports have already come in saying that the disinfectants stored near electrical appliances fanned and caused rapid spread of the flames.

The hospital claimed that several patients had taken treatment at Swarna Palace Centre and got discharged after their infection was cured.
