1

The Maharashtra Shiv Sena Government is giving blow after blow to noted journalist Arnab Goswami. Now, the Mumbai police arrested Republic TV distribution head Ghanshyam Singh in connection with the alleged TRP rigging scam. The Mumbai crime branch officials have released information about the latest arrest.

Chief Editor Arnab was already arrested. His arrest was relating to a different case. Ghanshyam is the 12th accused in the case of manipulation of the TRP ratings on the news pertaining to the actor Sushant Singh Rajput death case investigation.

Sushant death mystery became a point of severe conflict between the Shiv Sena and the BJP Government at the Centre. Udhav Thackeray has been furious over the Republic TV coverage. Especially there were many allegations against the Mumbai police investigation.

The TRP ratings case came up after an ad agency complained that the Republic TV has manipulated by striking fake deals with some viewers. The arrests of media persons have triggered heated exchanges between the rival political parties. The bitterness and acrimony is growing by the day on the Indian national political scene.

The BJP sympathisers say that after the Bihar election, Modi will handle Maharashtra toughly to control its aggression.

Journalist quits Republic TV after being called Shashi Tharoor’s spy

shwetha kothari quits republic tv

A senior correspondent with Republic TV, Shweta Kothari announced her resignation on Friday as Arnab Goswami suspects her of being a mole planted by Shashi Tharoor in the organisation. The primary reason for the accusation being – the Kerala Congress leader is one of her followers on Twitter. The Journalist took to social media to describe the series of the events which led to her into quitting the media house. Tharoor congratulated her for standing up for her integrity on twitter.

Here is the facebook post

“I have resigned from my current position as a Senior Correspondent with Republic TV with immediate effect. Below is the sequence of events that led to my resignation.

On a eventful evening on 30th August 2017, my reporting manager (an editor who I would not like to name) came up to me and said that Arnab Goswami suspects me of being a mole planted by Shashi Tharoor in the organisation, the reason being, Mr Tharoor follows me on Twitter.

If the proposition wasn’t ridiculous enough, I was further told that I have signed a petition on Change.org pertaining to Mr Tharoor a few years back, which has further raised suspicions.

The witch-hunt did not end there. Later that day I was informed by my colleagues that it was in fact my Reporting Manager who diligently spent time going through my social network profiles and later proposed that I maybe a SPY and also took it up with Arnab Goswami.

The humiliation continued for a few more days. My financial status was inquired (proposing that I may have been getting paid by Mr Tharoor); my colleagues were questioned on whether I try to extract information.

My twitter cover picture was misinterpreted to question my loyalty (A famous poem that still continues to be my cover picture).

It was only in late September when I finally raised it up with Arnab. I narrated the ordeal to him and the fact it has taken a hit on my morale. There was no concrete response.

To set the record straight, I have never met/contacted/known Mr Tharoor in any capacity.

Nobody bothered to clarify. I was left in the lurch. My loyalty questioned, my vanity hurt.

I am not the first person to have faced this scrutiny of character, before me there were other colleagues who have faced worst. I am confident, I am not the last. Question is-how long before the organization pulls the plug?

This isn’t the first time either that this sort of humiliation was meted out to me. On 30th May, 2017 I had done a sting operation on a sitting SHO for a story.

Later at around 7 PM, the Editor in question called me up and accused me of ‘flirting’ with the SHO. When I protested, she threatened to make the conversation public and destroy my career.

The culture of fear, intimidation and harassment I have seen in the last few months is unparalleled. My only concern, it goes unquestioned.
Last nail in the coffin came on 9th of October when I was unceremoniously dropped from the Special Projects team at 1.30 AM. When I tried questioning the rationale behind it, my reporting manager said, “it is beneath my dignity to talk to you”.

Sadly, when I once again brought to the notice of the top bosses, there was no intervention.

I have previously been associated with two fantastic organizations and have worked with industry stalwarts. Never have I witnessed such vindictive and vicious conduct.

While I am thankful to the organisation for giving me a great learning experience and abundant opportunities, I hope this pattern of vilification of employees on the basis hearsay ceases to exist.

It has taken a great amount of courage to pen this down, against the advice of many of my well wishers who believe that this may hamper my career prospects.

Perhaps it will, but if I don’t speak up today, what good am I as a journalist?”

News channels isolate BARC as Republic TV tops ratings

In its very first week Republic TV, launched by former Times Now editor Arnab Goswami, has topped the English news channel rankings. As per the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) ratings Republic TV was the most-watched news channel in the country in its first week. News Broadcasters Association (NBA) pleaded BARC to postpone the release of data which the later preferred to overlook. Consequently, the leading English news channels decided to exit from BARC.

Republic TV registered 2.1million impressions followed by Times Now at 1.1.million. NDTV, India Today and CNN registered approximately 0.3 million impressions in the order. It is evident that other channels couldn’t withstand the Arnab’s storm. Reportedly NBA Secretary General Annie Joseph wrote to BARC CEO Partho Dasgupta that the move by BARC has serious implications and has “caused irreversible damage to India’s existing English news TV Channels”. She further alleged discrepancies in the stats on pan-India basis. Rivals are already accusing Republic TV of following unethical distribution practices and the channels is said to be registered under different genres.

Nonetheless Republic TV and Arnab are celebrating the success. Apparently, Arnab said, “The ratings reaffirm my faith that people watch what they find credible”. The channels which hoped Republic TV to be a small breeze did not anticipate it to be a storm, especially the kind of storm that rips you into pieces.
