‘A Telugu film from south of India’: Rajamouli educates US journos about ‘RRR’

1

S.S. Rajamouli, who is basking in the attention that his magnum opus ‘RRR’ is getting after the Golden Globe win of ‘Naatu Naatu’, has set the record straight for American journalists. He has made it clear to them that the film is not a Bollywood movie, but “a Telugu film that comes from the south of India”.

Rajamouli was speaking to a group of journalists, following the screening of his film at the Directors Guild of America.

The director said: “RRR is not a Bollywood film, it is a Telugu film from the south of India where I come from, but I use the song to move the story forward rather than stopping the film and giving you a piece of music and dance. I just use those elements to move the story forward.”

He added: “At the end of the film, if you say I didn’t feel it like for three hours, then I know I am a successful filmmaker.”

Rajamouli’s magnum opus is all over the news as the song ‘Naatu Naatu’ from ‘RRR’ won the Golden Globe Award in the Best Original Song category. The song defeated the likes of Rihanna’s ‘Lift Me Up’ from ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ and Taylor Swift’s ‘Carolina’ from ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’.

‘Naato Naato’, Telugu pride and its first flag-bearer, the original NTR

0

It was history repeating itself, this time neither as farce, nor as tragedy, when Andhra politicians invoked Telugu pride while celebrating the ‘RRR’ song ‘Naatu Naatu’ getting the Golden Globe for Best Original Score.

It was the grandfather of NTR Jr, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, the Telugu superstar of his time and the original NTR, who became the first non-Congress chief minister of Andhra Pradesh in 1983, riding on the powerful slogan of Telugu Vari Atma Gauravam (or Telugu people’s self-respect). He was the supreme leader of the Telugu Desam Party, which is now helmed by his son-in-law, Chandrababu Naidu.

The ‘Naato Naato’ win was a booster dose for this ‘self-respect’, which NTR (the original) kept drumming home during his historic Chaitanya Ratham marathon mass contact movement across the state, which saw him covering 75,000 km on his remodelled Chevrolet van.

And guess who accompanied him throughout this criss-crossing of the then unified Andhra Pradesh? It was NTR Jr’s father, Nandamuri Harikrishna, an actor who started his career playing the baby Lord Krishna in NTR’s 1967 mythological classic drama, ‘Krishnavataram’. Harikrishna eventually got elected as an MLA, became a minister under NTR and also served as Rajya Sabha MP. He died in a car crash in 2018.

NTR Jr is Harikrishna’s son from his second wife, Shalini, a Kannadiga from Kundapur in the Udupi district of Karnataka.

The other star who shared screen space with NTR Jr, Ram Charan, also comes with a family history that, like everything else in Tollywood, is intertwined with that of the NTR clan. Although Ram Charan’s father, Telugu ‘Mega Star’ Chiranjeevi, has been a steadfast Congressman (he became India’s Tourism Minister under the stewardship of Manmohan Singh), he had great respect for NTR.

On May 28, 2020, on the occasion of NTR’s 97th birth anniversary, Chiranjeevi tweeted a throwback picture of him with the late former chief minister and Telugu icon with a message in Telugu, which when translated read: “The manliness of the Telugu race, the self-respect of the Telugu people. A memory that will never fade in the heart of the Telugu soil. The glory of Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao is ajaramaram (death defying).”

Chiranjeevi acted in the NTR film ‘Tirugu Leni Manishi’ in 1981. And it may seem pre-ordained that his son, Ram Charan, would be seen in action together with NTR’s grandson in a movie that has established a new milestone in Telugu cinema. And Pawan Kalyan, Chiranjeevi’s younger brother and founder of the Jana Sena Party, is in the news for warming up politically to Chandrababu Naidu and the Telugu Desam Party.

Of course, Chiranjeevi has had nasty political spats with NTR’s sixth son, the superstar and popular talk show host Nandamuri Balakrishna (better known as NBK), who also is the TDP MLA representing Hindupur, which had voted for NTR three times in succession since 1985, before sending NTR Jr’s father, Harikrishna, to the Assembly in 1996.

Hindupur has remained very much a TDP pocket borough since 1985, despite Andhra Pradesh moving back to the Congress under YSR (Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy) and then into the hands of his son and present Chief Minister, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

NBK and Chiranjeevi have publicly kissed and made up, but the megastar doesn’t see eye to eye with actor-producer-YSRCP leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Mohan Babu.

Their differences overshadowed the 2021 elections to Tollywood’s powerful trade body, Movie Artists Association (MAA), when Chiranjeevi put his weight behind Prakash Raj for president against Vishnu Manchu, Mohan Babu’s son, who eventually won the bitterly fought race.

Talking about the intertwined world of Tollywood, it was Mohan Babu who produced NTR’s last movie, the 1993 blockbuster ‘Major Chandrakanth’.

Finally, one more NTR connection that begs to find a mention. The late TDP leader and chief minister was very keen on starring in the biopic of Alluri Sitarama Raju, the freedom fighter after whom Ram Charan’s character in ‘RRR’ is modelled, but the role in the 1974 film went to another Telugu superstar, Krishna, who passed away on November 15, 2022.

NTR was said to be quite upset about it, but Krishna, whose sons Ramesh and Mahesh Babu are carrying on his legacy, was a formidable actor, although his dalliance with politics, as a Congressman under Rajiv Gandhi, was cut short by the ascendancy of the TDP.

Andhra minister hits back at Adnan Sami for lashing out at CM

0

An Andhra Pradesh minister hit back at singer Adnan Sami after the latter lashed out at Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for Telugu flag flying high message on “RRR” bagging a Golden Globe award.

Industries, Infrastructure and Information Technology Minister Gudivada Amarnath told Adnan Sami that he is no one to pass judgment on their patriotism.

“We are proud of our language, our culture and our identity. And I proclaim again, WE ARE TELUGU.

@AdnanSamiLive, you are no one to pass judgement on our patriotism,” tweeted the minister.

“My pride in being Telugu does not take away from my identity as an Indian,” he added.

Adnan Sami, who became an Indian citizen in 2016, had found fault with the Chief Minister’s congratulatory message. While congratulating the “RRR” team for winning the award for the “Naatu Naatu” song, Reddy tweeted: “The Telugu flag is flying high”.

“Telugu flag? You mean INDIAN flag right? We are Indians first & so kindly stop separating yourself from the rest of the country. Especially internationally, we are one country! This ‘separatist’ attitude is highly unhealthy as we saw in 1947!!! Thank you Jai HIND,” wrote Sami.

However, the singer received flak for his remark from many Twitter users who defended the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and reminded him that being proud Telugu does not make one less Indian.

“If only you cud read the underlying emotions of a telugite expressing his ethnic pride ,u wudn’t hv com up with ur Nationalism platitudes . Being REGIONAL makes us no less INDIAN than any of our Northern counterparts nor it leads to fissiparous tendencies keep ur gyan to urself,” wrote a netizen.

“With that logic, being Indian doesn’t make you any less regional,” argued Sami.

“But you have taken an innocent statement of regional pride out of context and are now forcing 600K fellow Indians to see your perspective through a separatist lens just because it was not aceworded politically correctly”, wrote another ATwitter user.

“A Chief Minister of a great State has all the means, facilities & responsibility to word a statement as aPolitically Correct’!!aPeriod!!,” responded the singer.

1

The Telugu flag is flying high, said Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy in his reaction to blockbuster movie ‘RRR’ winning Golden Globes award.

On behalf of the people of Andhra Pradesh, he congratulated music director M.M. Keeravani, director S.S. Rajamouli, actors Junior NTR and Ram Charan and the entire team of ‘RRR’ on bagging the award for the best original song for ‘Naatu Naatu’.

Golden Globe 2023: Sarees, sherwanis for the win!

0

As India bagging a Golden Globe for the number ‘Naatu Naatu’ has made headlines, the Indian attire sported by the ‘RRR’ family too grabbed eyeballs at the prestigious event.

‘RRR’ brought home the Golden Globe for Best Original Song in Motion Picture for the song ‘Naatu Naatu’, however, the film lost out the bigger share of the pie — that of the Best Motion Picture Non-English award to the Argentine film ‘Argentina, 1985’.

It was Ram Charan, his wife Upasana, M. M. Keeravaani, his wife Srivalli S. S. Rajamouli and his better half Rama Rajamouli, who unlike any other global star chose to flaunt the Indian wear at the ceremony.

Ram Charan looked every inch dapper in an all black Kurta paired with straight pants and sunglasses. His wife Upasana dolled up in a printed saree.

Rajamouli chose a black kurta, red dhoti pants and a crisp red dupatta while his wife Rama, a costume designer, opted for a green and orange Kanjeevaram saree.

Keeravaani seemed to join the gang with a black kurta and straight pants. His wife chose a bright yellow and orengish-red nine-yard wonder.

Jr. NTR looked every inch handsome as he opted for a black suit paired with a bow-tie and a white shirt.

‘RRR’ centres around two real-life Indian revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem, their fictional friendship and their fight against the British Raj.

Set in the 1920s, the plot explores the undocumented period in their lives when both the revolutionaries chose to go into obscurity before they began the fight for their country.

Golden Globes 2023: ‘RRR’ loses Best Motion Picture Non-English to ‘Argentina, 1985’

0

While the S.S. Rajamouli directorial ‘RRR’ bagged the Golden Globe for Original song, it lost out the bigger share of the pie — that of the Best Motion Picture Non-English award to the Argentine film ‘Argentina, 1985’.

‘RRR’ was India’s big hope at the Golden Globes this year, but it left the Indian community and the diaspora with a bittersweet feeling as it bagged one award out of two nominations — Original Song ‘Nattu Nattu’ but failed to secure the trophy for Best Motion Picture Non-English.

‘RRR’ was nominated alongside Korean romantic mystery ‘Decision To Leave’, German anti-war drama ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, historical drama ‘Argentina, 1985’, and French-Dutch coming-of-age drama ‘Close’ in the Non-English category.

‘RRR’, which has become an international phenomenon with a collection of over Rs 1,200 crore (approximately) worldwide, stars Ram Charan and Jr NTR in the lead roles.

As for ‘Argentina, 1985’, the film is based on real events surrounding the 1985 Trial of the Juntas, which prosecuted the ringleaders of Argentina’s last civil-military dictatorship.

It sheds light on the work of a group of lawyers led by prosecutors Julio CAsar Strassera and Luis Moreno Ocampo against those responsible for the most bloody dictatorship in the history of Argentina.

Golden Globe Awards 2023 are streaming in India on Lionsgate Play.

‘What more can an actor ask for?’: NTR Jr on the Globes red carpet

0

RRR may have lost the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture (Non-English), but the ‘RRR’ team still has much to celebrate. And celebrate NTR Jr will.

Talking to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ on the red carpet, looking dapper in a tuxedo and bow tie, with wife Lakshmi Pranathi also in black, the ‘RRR’ star said: “It can’t get any better than this. The West accepting us … America, the Mecca of filmmaking … here we are at the Globes. What more can an actor ask for? … We are truly honoured, truly honoured.”

When asked about the ecstatic audience response to the ‘RRR’ screening at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in LA, NTR Jr, after noting how a visit to the century-old cinema was on his bucket list, said: “It blew my mind … That reaction yesterday was nothing less than the reaction back home. People were dancing, people were yelling, people were shouting and screaming. I just loved it, I just loved it.”

He added: “Audiences accepting ‘RRR’ is a very big award altogether. We’ll be truly blessed … It’ll be our pride.”

And what did he plan to do after the awards ceremony was over? With his wife beaming in the background, NTR Jr said: “I just want to relax … chill. Yes, I am going to unwind a little bit.”

NTR Jr and S.S. Rajamouli were welcomed with rounds of applause and shouts of “Bravo! Best picture of the year”, by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the organisation responsible for the Oscars, at a special screening in Los Angeles of their much talked-about film ‘RRR’.

Stars charge because everybody wants stars

0

S.S. Rajamouli, the maker of the latest international hit, ‘RRR’, says that costs charged by stars and directors caused this sorry state of affairs where the Hindi film industry is in the doldrums. The stars took the credit when a film succeeded and went on to increase their remuneration.

It is a myth that a star makes a film work. At best, a star, if popular, can only help bring in the initial footfalls. The rest depends totally on other factors, notably the content, which counts the most.

It is a fact that content makes a star out of any actor. Rajesh Khanna, for example, was created post-‘Aradhana’. As for Amitabh Bachchan, he struggled from 1969 onwards when his debut film, ‘Saat Hindustani’, was released. It was only in 1973 that ‘Zanjeer’ turned into a superstar. Earlier, a producer would go for the talent of an actor. Otherwise, actors such as Sanjeev Kumar, Rishi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Govinda, Amol Palekar, and other such performers would not have carried their films to silver or golden jubilees.

Rajamouli should know that star prices follow the same economic formula: the demand. It is not limited to Hindi movies. Star prices, along with cinema admission rates, have also been a big concern in the South Indian film industries and to address the issue, the trade bodies there had also passed certain resolutions to convince the stars to be more reasonable.

It is illogical but when it comes to big-time, successful filmmakers, stars are more reasonable, but they fleece an aspiring producer till he bleeds.

How did filmmaking turn into a multi-crore investment business suddenly? It was thanks to big corporate houses that suddenly saw the film industry as a mint! Or, did they think they knew the business better than the freelance filmmakers did?

Sadly, these corporate houses knew nothing about filmmaking. All they had was money. Traditionally, a star’s remuneration would be equal to the price of one major circuit (Bombay and Delhi-UP being counted as the major circuits), but no such formula was followed when corporate houses came into the picture.

The big companies never asked who the writer was or found out about the main technicians involved in a film. They backed what the film trade calls ‘proposals’. Only the stars mattered, so even as the stars made money, the corporate moneybags lost money big time. And while these moneybags deserted the scene, the stars stuck to their impractical demands.

Rajamouli is right about star prices, but he also prefers to work only with stars. Would he have risked working with newcomers in ‘RRR’ instead of NTR Jr and Ram Charan? He had a great subject, after all, and he is also proficient at executing his projects. So why not new faces? Simple, stars draw the initial audience and with big budgets and widespread releases, the first few days matter the most.

Maybe, the two heroes of ‘RRR’ were more reasonable with Rajamouli, considering his track record, but some other producer is certainly going to pay big money to them after the super success of ‘RRR’.

Mr Know All!

Social media has nurtured many attention seekers, and those who have not amounted to much in their chosen field, swarm social media platforms. Those who vent their frustrations here are either those who have gained unexpected success, or, mainly, those who are rejected, failures.

They do it to stay relevant, to stay in the news. All they have been able to do is make social media anti-social.

They are identified with the film industry and are not known to be proficient in other fields. But they know what the government should do, what the prime minister should do, and what the other filmmakers should do. Imagine, this coming from the industry rejects!

The problem is not with social media, they also serve the purpose of those who have no agenda or frustration to vent. The problem lies with the media. Any comment by these irrelevant people becomes newsworthy to them.

This know-all nonentity has aired his observation that when one emulates a South Indian dubbed film such as ‘KGF 2’, which succeeded all over India, you are heading towards a disaster.

Now, why would a Hindi filmmaker want to emulate a certain film? Hindi filmmakers don’t emulate, they simply copy. Copying officially is called a remake. They have copied a lot many foreign films. When a successful film starts a trend, others do try to follow it.

A trend does work for a time. Till another trend is set.

A lot many Hindi films were big hits. Has anybody tried to emulate ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ or ‘Mother India’? Nobody tried to emulate ‘Sholay’, ‘Deewaar’ or ‘Zanjeer’! Yes, it became a to cast Rajesh Khanna in mainly romantic films, even as Amitabh Bachchan carried on with his angry hero image. That is called following a trend.

The same man also has a grouse against Vivek Agnihotri, claiming that the maker’s research for ‘The Kashmir Files’ was not complete! Fine, but while you are at it, are you capable of pointing out what exactly was missing or, what more was needed in the film’s research?

‘The Kashmir Files’ was not an entertainer as genres go, Yet, the film was a huge hit and the best Hindi film of the year, collections-wise. One thing every filmmaker knows is that you can’t prove your audience wrong. ‘The Kashmir Files’ was lapped up by cinegoers and Rs 245 crore that the film managed to collect at the box office vouches for that.

If your films had an audience, you would know that. You tried to emulate your ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’ with a sequel, did it work? It did not and that’s why makers don’t emulate a successful film, they follow a trend.

When it comes to ‘The Tashkent Files’ or ‘The Kashmir Files’, neither you, nor any other maker can emulate it. And the same goes for the South Indian blockbusters.

This guy posts his unasked-for comments, observations and advice, and opinions just to gain some publicity. So, I have decided not to name him.

What trend have you been able to set?

Comment on politics and other social issues, but it is not ethical to pass judgments on other makers and their films. Especially when one of them made a huge hit that you need to emulate!

‘RRR’ above Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans’ in ‘Rolling Stone’ 22 Best Movies list

0

As ‘RRR’ emerges as an Oscars season favourite across America, with the Pakistani Punjabi film, ‘Joyland’, giving it close competition, the influential ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine has named the “epic Tollywood blockbuster” as one of the 22 Best Movies of 2022.

The S.S. Rajamouli directed historical adventure drama is in patrician company on the international list. Notable among the titles that share space on the list with ‘RRR’ are Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans’ at No. 15 (‘RRR’ is at No. 12), the much-acclaimed ‘Tar’ (about the downfall of the famous female conductor of a classical orchestra, Lydia Tar, played by Cate Blanchett) at No. 11, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ starring Colin Farrell (No. 8), jailed Iranian director Jafar Panahi’s ‘No Bears’ (No. 5), Park Chan-wook’s Cannes favourite, ‘Decision to Leave’ (No. 3), and the list topper ‘Hit the Road’, a film by debutant Panaha Panahi, son of Jafar.

Here’s what ‘Rolling Stone’ has to say about ‘RRR’: “A ripped, shirtless man narrowly avoiding a midair collision between an angry wolf and an even angrier tiger. A rescue mission involving a sinking raft, a flaming train, a horse, a motorcycle, some rope and the flag of India. A dance-off, complete with some highly choreographed suspender-based moves, that doubles as a class-conscious f*** you.

“Bromantic montages, slo-mo brooding, flashbacks that constitute their own short films, a man kicking an arrow through a tree trunk into another man’s head, and an acrobatic sequence involving a hero fighting legions of soldiers while perched on his best friend’s shoulders.

“These are just a few of the things you’ll see in S.S. Rajamouli’s Tollywood blockbuster, although referring to this as a single ‘blockbuster’ feels weird. Charting the bond between an undercover police officer (Ram Charan) for the British Raj and the rural revolutionary (N.T. Rama Rao Jr.) he’s trying to bust, this fit-to-burst story of ‘Rise, Roar, Revolt’ felt like you were mainlining a century’s worth of cinematic epics in one three-plus hour rush.”

A nod from ‘Rolling Stone’ may not guarantee an Oscar, but it does give you an idea of the kind of critical acclaim ‘RRR’ has been garnering from the western media as well as international film personalities.

‘Rolling Stone’ editors admit that theirs is not a complete list, but the films on it are a good reason for cinegoers not to lose hope in the power of movies to keep drawing back to the theatres, contrary to the dire predictions about footfalls by industry pundits.

To quote the words of ‘Rolling Stone’: “Yes, the big-picture view of big pictures did sometimes seem dire. But once again, the movies delivered. The movies aren’t dead. They’re not even the past.”
