Sharmila’s padayatra comes to a halt!

0

The ongoing padayatra in Telangana being conducted by YSRTP president YS Sharmila came to a halt on Wednesday (today).

Sharmila was forced to halt her padayatra following the election code of conduct coming into force in Telangana with the issuance of notification by Election Commission of India to conduct MLC polls for 12 seats under local bodies quota.

Sharmila started her padayatra ‘Praja Prasthanam’ on October 20 from Chevella constituency in Ranga Reddy district.

The padayatra was supposed to go on for 400 days covering 4,000 kilometres.

However, Sharmila was forced to halt the yatra after 20 days.

Sharmila said she will resume her yatra after MLC polls in December.

Sharmila is now planning to hold 72-hour deeksha at Indira Park in Hyderabad in support of farmers demanding the government to procure paddy from farmers in both kharif and rabi seasons as usual for MSP (minimum support price).

Election Commission gives shock after shock to KCR!

0

TRS president and Telangana Chief Minister K.Chandrashekar Rao is receiving shock after shock from the Election Commission of India since the recent Huzurabad bypoll.

When KCR planned to hold a huge public meeting in Huzurabad with one lakh people to campaign for TRS, the EC imposed restrictions saying that no public gatherings of over 1,000 will be allowed in Huzurabad.

When KCR planned to shift public meeting to border areas of Huzurabad to avoid EC restrictions, then the EC has extended restrictions to entire Karimanagar district as well as neighbouring Hanamkonda district.

With this KCR was forced to cancel his public meeting.

TRS lost to BJP’s Etala Rajender in the Huzurabad bypoll counting on November 2.

With this Etala is hogging entire media limelight in Telangana since November 2.

To beat this, KCR has decided to hold press conferences every day at Pragathi Bhavan to ensure that entire media coverage revolves around him and Etala gets sidelines.

This strategy proved successful after entire media focus shifted to KCR’s press conferences on Sunday and Monday.

When KCR was getting ready to hold one more press conference on Tuesday, the EC gave a shock by releasing schedule for MLC elections under local bodies quota for 12 seats.

The election code of conduct came into immediate effect forcing KCR to cancel his press conferences.

KCR planned to hold press conferences for a month but EC stopped him for a month by imposing election code for MLC polls.

KCR’s tirade after BJP win in Huzurabad heats up T’gana politics

0

The BJP’s victory in Huzurabad Assembly by-election and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao declaring a war on the saffron party has suddenly heated up politics in Telangana.

In an unprecedented move, Rao addressed two press conferences in as many days to slam the BJP, particularly its state leadership and the latter is citing this as the proof that it has emerged as the main opposition to ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).

The Chief Minister launched a bitter attack on BJP on Sunday over the Centre’s refusal to lift paddy from the State in the coming Rabi season and the saffron party’s demand that Telangana government slash Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel like many other States.

The next day saw BJP state president Bandi Sanjay Kumar launching a counter attack on KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known. But what surprised many is that a few hours later, the Chief Minister addressed another marathon press conference to go all out against BJP.

Making it clear that he will not leave the BJP leaders, KCR told media persons that he may call daily press conferences to expose BJP on every issue.

The TRS chief’s offensive baffled the political circles and it was seen as a reaction to the outcome in Huzurabad, where his close associate turned rival Eatala Rajender won the by-election as a candidate of the BJP, the party he joined after KCR dropped him from Cabinet on allegations of land grabbing.

Though KCR personally did not campaign in the bypoll, his party went all out to stop Rajender, who had been winning the seat as TRS candidate since 2009. Riding on Rajender’s popularity in the constituency, the BJP wrested the seat from TRS.

Political observers say the outcome has rattled KCR as Rajender’s win is likely to inspire other TRS dissidents to raise the banner of revolt. The BJP is also projecting the win in Huzurabad as reflection of anti-incumbency sentiment and affirmation of its emergence as the main opposition in the State.

By wresting two Assembly seats from TRS in year, the saffron party is likely to go for a kill to achieve its mission 2023 of coming to power in Telangana.

This may have prompted KCR to go on the offensive before the BJP further consolidate itself. He apparently turned the tables on the BJP, which was looking to politically capitalise on the unrest among farmers over the issue of paddy cultivation.

The TRS government had been asking farmers for the last few days not to go for paddy cultivation during the coming Rabi season as the Centre had refused to procure rice. When Bandi Sanjay urged farmers to go ahead with the paddy cultivation, KCR warned him against playing with the lives of farmers. “He speaks whatever he likes. We acted with restraint but now when he is trying to play with the lives of farmers, we can’t keep quiet,” said KCR.

The TRS chief, who often used to dismiss BJP as an insignificant force and rarely reacted to statements of its leaders, vented all the anger over the kind of language used by Bandi Sanjay while criticising him.

“How dare Bandi Sanjay say he will send me to jail. Let them dare touch me and we will show what TRS is capable of,” he said.

Not stopping at that, he slammed the BJP government at the Centre for repeatedly hiking the prices of petrol and diesel even when the price of crude oil in the international market was falling. He targeted the saffron party over the new farm legislations and for trying to “suppress” the agitation of farmers.

When Bandi Sanjay took exception to some remarks made by KCR on Chinese incursions in India and called him anti-national, the Chief Minister reacted sharply and immediately. He said for the last seven years, BJP’s practice has been to brand all its critics as traitors or urban naxals and use the Income Tax department and Enforcement Directorate (ED) against them.

KCR, however, made it clear that he was not afraid of them. “I am not scared as I am not a thief,” he said. He also asked BJP if he was not anti-national when they took his support for the election of the country’s President and for passing various Bills in Parliament.

The Chief Minister vowed to continue to fight against farm laws and till the Centre announced that it would procure paddy from Telangana on the lines of Punjab.

He also announced that TRS would hold protests in every village on November 12 demanding that the Centre procure paddy from the State in Rabi season. He also called on farmers to grill BJP leaders when they come to their villages.

Rejecting the BJP’s demand that the State government slash VAT on fuel, KCR said those who hiked the prices should roll it back. He also said he would not rest till the BJP government at the Centre withdraws the cess on petrol and diesel.

On Sunday, he had stated that he along with other TRS leaders would sit on a dharna in Delhi, demanding procurement of paddy from Telangana, withdrawal of three central farm laws and withdrawal of cess on petrol and diesel.

KCR also remarked that TRS did not come to power like BJP in some states through backdoor methods. “The BJP leaders only know to divide people on communal lines and instigate them. They play on sentiments of the people and create unrest to gain votes,” he said.

Why some BJP leaders are worried about Eatala’s moves?

0

A section of the BJP is keenly watching Huzurabad’s newly re-elected MLA Eatala Rajender and his moves. This section is doubtful about Etala’s intentions. To add fuel to fire, his recent comments in TV show on the ABN Andhrajyothi, have become a hot topic for discussion among the BJP circles.

During the course of his interview to ABN Andhrajyothy CEO V Radhakrishna, Eatala repeatedly reminded hi of his Left background. On one occasion, he said that both he and his wife were from a Left background and added that their honesty and fighting spirit are because of their left ideology. This sure is not music to the ears of the Right wingers for whom everything Left is an anathema.

More importantly, in reply to a question, Rajender said that had he contested as an independent, he would have got more votes. This is being seen as a direct indictment of the BJP. This has raised several eyebrows in the BjP circles. Significantly, all through the campaign, Eatala and his wife Jamuna were unhappy with the way the top leaders of Telangana behaved with him. They were not only uncooperative but were also putting spokes in Rajender’s work. So, Rajender had to seen the national leadership’s help to rein in the local leaders.

There is also a buzz that the Congress is trying to woo Eatala Rajender into the party. Some even say that Revanth Reddy has shifted his votes to the BjP only after striking a deal with Eatala The agreement was that EAtala would shift to the Congress after winning on a BJP ticket. However.this appears to be too far-fetched. But, a section is wary of Eatala’s moves, especially after his comments on the TV chat show.

Big embarassment for speaker as Etela takes oath as MLA today

0

It will be a big embarrassment for Telangana Assembly speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy when Etela Rajender will take oath as MLA at 11.30 am on Wednesday.

Etela Rajender is all set to take oath as MLA from BJP in Speaker’s chamber on Friday.

When Etela Rajender resigned as TRS MLA on June 12 this year after confrontation with TRS chief and Chief Minister K.Chandrashekar Rao, the speaker denied appointment to Etela to meet him to submit resignation.

With this, Etela was forced to submit his letter to Assembly secretary Narasimha Charyulu.

Etela felt very humiliated at speaker’s treatment towards him as he was a six-time senior MLA from Huzurabad since 2004.

Etela said speaker denied appointment to him with a fear that KCR will get angry if he meets him.

Etela also felt very insulted after his resignation was approved by the speaker within minutes of submission and even before he came out of the Assembly building.

Etela said the speaker accepted his resignation within minutes due to fear of KCR.

Etela later joined BJP and trounced TRS in recent Huzurabad bypoll even after KCR spending thousands of crores of rupees.

Now, speaker has to administer oath to Etela on Wednesday.

In this way, Etela is taking revenge on speaker who humiliated him.

Now, KCR testing the patience of media with back-to-back PCs!

0

TRS chief and Telangana Chief Minister K.Chandrashekar Rao is the most unpredictable politician.

No one can guess or gauge his move be it political or administrative.

KCR earned the name of remaining inaccessible to media after he became CM of Telangana in 2014.

Media personnel always complain about KCR avoiding media all the time.

Now, KCR has turned the tables on media by holding back-to-back press conferences.

The media personnel were shocked to receive a sudden message from CMO Whatsapp Group inviting them for CM’s press meet at Pragathi Bhavan on Sunday.

While the press meet time was at 7 pm, the message sent was at 5.30 pm on Sunday. Despite short notice, media personnel rushed to Pragathi Bhavan on Sunday evening, that too a weekend holiday.

But no media personnel expected that there are more shocks from KCR in store.

On Monday, they again received a Whatsapp message inviting them to attend KCR’s press meet at Pragathi Bhavan at 4 pm.

The message was sent at 2.45 pm. Media personnel cannot believe their eyes and ears over KCR holding back to back press meets which they did not expect even in their wildest dreams.

While closing the press meet at 6.30 pm, KCR said, “we will meet again tomorrow for press meet.”

KCR’s comments made media personnel faint for a while. They recovered soon after and started discussing among themselves what happened to KCR and why this press meets every day for a person like KCR who hardly meets media once in a year.

But the common opinion being expressed by all was that it’s the impact of Huzurabad Assembly bypoll in which BJP’s Etala Rajender defeated TRS in a battle of prestige between KCR and Etala.

Now, KCR wants to move closer to media by meeting every day. But as they ‘too much is too bad’. This too much press meets may test the media’s patience and may boomerang on KCR and TRS.

Whoever questions Centre is branded anti-national: Telangana CM

0

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar on Monday said whoever questions the BJP get branded anti-national or has to face raids by Income Tax, Enforcement Directorate or other agencies.

He reacted sharply to state BJP President Bandi Sanjay terming him anti-national.

“Can I be called an anti-national for demanding the BJP government at the Centre to protect the borders amid reports of encroachments by neighbouring country,” he asked.

“I was not anti-national when we extended support for the President’s election and for passing various Bills in the Parliament,” he asked.

KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known, said whoever questions the Central government is dubbed as anti-national and various agencies are used against him. He alleged that this has been the style of BJP for last seven years.

“Is BJP a factory of anti-nationals,” he asked and remarked that BJP leaders “stamp” those questioning them as either “anti-national” or “urban naxalites”.

Earlier, alleging that KCR made certain comments supporting China and demoralising and insulting soldiers on the Indo-China border, Sanjay had termed him anti-national and demanded that he resign or apologise to the nation. The BJP leader had even alleged that KCR was speaking in support of China as he had made investments in that country.

KCR ridiculed the allegation and said he was not the one to get scared by the threats of BJP leaders.

He stated that the BJP cannot do anything to him as he or his government was not involving into any irregularities. “We have no industries nor did we indulge in cases like money laundering,” he said adding that they were ready for any inquiry.

For a second consecutive day, the Chief Minister addressed a news conference to slam the Centre for not procuring paddy from the state and for demanding the state to cut down prices of petrol and diesel.

The Chief Minister announced that Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) will stage dharnas in all constituency headquarters in the state on November 12 to mount pressure on the Centre to purchase paddy from the farmers.

The TRS chief said he was committed to fight for the cause of Telangana farmers till the last breath.

He also made it clear that state was seeking its due and that the Centre was not doling out any largesse on Telangana.

KCR asked Bandi Sanjay to respond clearly if he would ask the Centre to procure paddy or not. He made it clear that he would not leave the BJP and expose it on every issue.

He reiterated his request to the farmers to not to go for paddy cultivation without any assurance from Centre that it will purchase it. He said farmers should question the BJP leaders on whether the Centre will purchase their produce or not.

KCR also demanded that the Centre withdraw cess on diesel and petrol to provide relief to common man instead of asking the state to cut Value Added Tax (VAT).

He said it was the Centre which hiked the prices of fuel many times and also started collecting cess.

KCR claimed that if the Centre withdraws cess, the price of diesel and petrol can come down to Rs 69 and Rs 77 per litre.

He also announced that his government will release employment calendar every year and will fill the vacant posts in the coming days.

KCR making false claims about paddy procurement, VAT on fuel: Telangana BJP chief

0

A day after Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao slammed the BJP over paddy cultivation, VAT on fuel prices and other issues, BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Monday hit back at him for, reportedly, uttering lies.

Alleging that KCR was spreading falsehood, Sanjay Kumar disputed the former’s claims over paddy procurement, extent of paddy cultivation and farm loan waiver.

Demanding KCR’s resignation and his apology to the nation, Sanjay Kumar also alleged that KCR made certain comments supporting China and demoralised our soldiers on the Indo-China border.

Addressing a news conference, he challenged the chief minister to come out with details of farm loan waiver. He also claimed that farmers in the KCR’s home district, Siddipet, were committing suicides.

“KCR should specify what he did for farmers in seven years,” he said. He alleged that the chief minister was creating more problems for farmers by preventing them from growing paddy and cotton.

According to Sanjay Kumar, KCR also lied about the Centre refusing to procure paddy. He said: “The Food Corporation of India (FCI) wrote to the state government that paddy will be procured between October 21 and January 21.”

He also asked KCR to show evidence that farmers cultivated paddy on 62 lakh acres in the state.

While lashing out at Telangana BJP, regarding paddy procurement issue, KCR had said: “Delhi BJP says it will not procure Rabi rice from Telangana and the silly BJP here says it will force the state government to procure all the Rabi rice.”

Sanjay demanded that Telangana government reduce VAT rates on fuel as many states have done after the Centre cut excise duty on Diwali. He said: “The Telangana government raised VAT on fuel by 5 per cent in 2015.”

“Telangana has the second highest VAT rate on fuel after Rajasthan. For every liter of petrol, the Centre gets Rs. 27 while the State gets Rs. 28. And from Rs. 27 which the Centre gets, the State receives Rs. 12,” he added.

Sanjay also slammed the chief minister for using objectionable language while criticizing the Opposition.

This came after KCR warned Sanjay and other leaders on Sunday that he would take legal action against those who use abusive language and cross the line of decency.

0

How Eatala’s money power is a “threat” to many BJP leaders?

0

Eatala Rajender’s style of electoral campaign and his money power have raised the bar for the BJP workers. By any standards, Huzurabad byelection perhaps is the costliest election ever in the Telugu states. The ruling TRS has reportedly spent huge amounts and what is important is that Eatala Rajender too matched the TRS in spending.

Now this is the talk of the town in the BjP circles. Most of the BjP leaders are said to be surprised at the kind of money that was flushed down the campaign drain in Huzurabad. The party leaders and workers feel that by his spending Eatala has brought in a new culture into the party and that it would not be possible for other party leaders to match Eatala in the spending.

As is the BJP’s wont, thousands of party leaders and workers have camped for weeks on end and campaigned for Eatala Rajender. But, they were surprised to find the kind of amenities and facilities provided to them by Eatala. Swanky farmhouses were provided to them and vehicles were reportedly arranged for them. This was something new for the BJP workers. Normally, the workers and leaders are content with whatever facility is provided to them, but in Huzurabad, Eatala reportedly arranged top class facilities for the party leaders and workers.

Now many BJP leaders reportedly are worried. What if they have to contest and people from various parts of the state join the campaign? Will they be able to provide such facilities as were provided by Eatala? Hasn’t Eatala raised the bar so much that it has become difficult for other leaders to sustain the campaign if election were held in their respective constituencies?

We will cut your tongues: KCR warns BJP leaders

0

After a long time, TRS president and Telangana Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao attacked BJP on Sunday (today).

KCR did not spare any BJP leader right from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay, union minister G.Kishan Reddy and MP Dharamapuri Aravind.

KCR held a sudden press conference at Pragathi Bhavan at 7 pm on Sunday. This is KCR’s first public appearance after TRS lost Huzurabad Assembly bypoll to BJP.

KCR who was confined to his farmhouse for the last two weeks came to Pragathi Bhavan and held a press conference to attack BJP.

KCR warned BJP leaders that he will cut their tongues if they make false allegations against TRS government or against him.

KCR said he bore all nonsense of BJP leaders all these days with a view but he will no longer tolerate it.

Referring to Bandi Sanjay’s frequent statements that the BJP government at the Centre will soon send KCR to jail, KCR dared BJP to touch him and see what happens and asked will BJP survives in Telangana if they send KCR to jail.

KCR also blasted Sanjay for the frequent allegations that TRS government indulged in heavy corruption in irrigation projects.

KCR dared BJP government to conduct an inquiry into this and he is ready to face any inquiry.

BCs gain more hold on BJP in Telangana, OCs worried!

0

The historic victory of BJP candidate Etela Rajender in Huzurabad bypoll seems to be showing its impact on ‘caste equations’ in BJP Telangana unit.

Although it’s just four days since Etala Rajender, hailing from Mudiraj caste from Backward Classes (BCs) registered victory in bypoll, the BC leaders in Telangana BJP already started projecting Rajender as future Chief Minister of Telangana State in 2023 December Assembly polls.

BC leaders went to the extent of saying that for the first time a BC CM in the form of Etela Rajender will unfurl national flag at Golconda Fort in 2019 on the occasion of Independence Day.

This naturally is creating anger among leaders from OCs (forward castes) such as Reddys, Velamas, Brahmins etc such as Kishan Reddy, Vidyasagar Rao, Indrasena Reddy, N.Ramchander Rao etc.

These OC leaders called the shots in Telangana BJP all these years but then suddenly the situation changed with the appointment of Bandi Sanjay, a BC leader, as BJP Telangana president in March 2020.

With this, the BCs started gaining hold on BJP in Telangana unit.

With Etela Rajender becoming BJP MLA by defeating TRS, the hold of BC leaders on Telangana BJP has further increased.

BC leaders say BJP high command especially Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are very happy at Etela Rajender’s achievement and they strongly feel that only Etela has the capacity to defeat KCR’s government in 2023 Assembly polls.

They are predicting that the BJP high command will soon announce Etela as BJP’s CM candidate for Telangana Assembly polls in December 2023.

After students, TRS losing support of farmers too!

1

Nothing seems to be working in favour of ruling TRS in Telangana now, which ruled the roost in Telangana since coming to power in June 2014.

Students, unemployed, employees and farmers played a key role in bringing TRS to power in 2014 and 2018 Assembly polls.

But now the TRS seems to be losing the support of them one after the other.

The Huzurabad bypoll defeat on November 2 clearly indicated the fact that TRS lost the support of youth and unemployed.

TRS enjoyed formidable support of farmers all these days due to Rythu Bandhu, Rythu Bima, Kaleshwaram project, 24×7 free power to agriculture etc.

But the party seems to be losing the support of farmers too going by the protests by farmers across Telangana who are blocking the roads to express their anger at TRS government for failing to procure paddy from farmers for MSP even after Chief Minister K.Chandrashekar Rao made tall claims on paddy procurement two weeks ago.

Agriculture minister S.Niranjan Reddy delivered yet another blow to farmers on Saturday (today) saying that the TRS government will not purchase paddy from farmers in Telangana produced in rabi season.

He asked farmers not to sow paddy in rabi and if farmers continue to sow paddy in rabi, it is at their own risk and the TRS government will not take responsibility.

Why KCR is not coming out of farmhouse since Oct 25?

1

TRS chief and Telangana Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao has been confined to his farmhouse in Erravelli located in the outskirts of Hyderabad for the last two weeks.

KCR did not make public appearance since October 25.

The last time KCR was seen either in public or in media was on October 25. KCR attended TRS plenary held at Hitex Convention Centre in Gachibowli, Hyderabad on October 25.

KCR left to his farmhouse straight from plenary on October 25.

KCR reviewed Huzurabad byelection polling on October 30 and counting on November 2. KCR was supposed to return to Pragathi Bhavan on November 3.

But still, KCR remains confined to his farmhouse although it is November 6 today, nearly two weeks.

KCR is reportedly very upset at TRS losing to BJP’s Etela Rajender in bypoll on November 2.

KCR feels that more than TRS, it was his defeat personally in the hands of Etela and he was reportedly unable to digest this fact.

For this reason, he is confined to his farmhouse even after bypoll result as he wants to be alone for a few more days till he recovers from the defeat.

He directed his security personnel not to allow anyone to meet him, neither ministers nor MLAs, MLCs, MPs or any other leaders.

With KCR not seen anywhere since October 25, TRS leaders and cadre are worried over what could be the impact of Huzurabad bypoll on KCR.

What’s behind YS Sharmila’s secret visits to Old City?

0

If you thought that YS Sharmila is only busy with her padayatras and deekhsas, then think again. Sharmila, who cut her teeth in politics under her father YS Rajasekhar Reddy and brother YS Jagan’s tutelage, is implementing a clear-cup plan to woo the Muslims. He is trying to bring the Muslims closer to her party and is trying to revive the bonds that her father had with the MIM and other Muslim groups in Telangana.

According to sources, she has already covered several parts of the Old City of Hyderabad and met several leaders. She has reportedly met MIM supremo Asaduddin Owaisi and sought his help in her yatra. Interestingly, ever since she launched the party, several Muslim youth are seen visiting the party headquarters in the Lotus Pond. She is said to have discussed on how he would extend his support to her.

In another development, she has also met the leaders of the Tabligh Jamaat. She held discussions with the leaders of the Tabligh and sought their support for her yatra. She also met influential Muslim religious leader Maulana Ghiyasuddin and his followers. The Maulana has great influence on the politics of the Old City region.

Highly placed sources also tell us that she is in touch with the Muslim leaders from across Telanganan. The Muslims have a soft corner for YSR because of the 4 per cent reservations he had implemented during his reign. However, the political situation in Telangana has changed significantly. So, Sharmila is said to be reworking arrangements with the community and its leaders.

Bypoll after-effects: BJP to hold key meet on Sunday

Rattled by the recent reversals in the bypolls across the county, the ruling BJP has begun damage control exercises. On one hand it is trying to ameliorate the lot of the harried middle class by reducing the taxes on petrol, diesel and the LPG gas, it is planning out strategies to woo the voters in the five states that would go to polls early next year on the other.

The BJP top brass will meet on Sunday to take stock of the preparations for the poll-bound five states – UP, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand. Key leaders such as poll incharges, party unit leaders and conveners will attend this meeting. PM Narendra Modi, Party chief JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will conduct the meeting. The meeting will review the work in progress and decide on future strategies for these five states.

The meeting is being held in the shadow of a string of reversals in Haryana, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Karnataka in the recent bypolls. The party is all but washed out in West Bengal. Even in Karnataka, it had forfeited one seat to the Congress. In Haryana, the party could not win the sole seat. Even in Rajasthan, the party had to put up with reversals. In Himachal, the party was left shell-shocked by the complete washout. It lost the sitting MP seat and all the three MLA seats. The state will go to polls early next year.

The party feels that the rising fuel prices could be one of the main reasons for the debacle. Hence, soon after the bypoll results, the fuel prices were brought down. The Centre has also taken steps to bring down the prices of the edible oils across the country. The BJP has realized that unless it does something substantial on the prices front, it is likely to lose all the important states in the polls.

Pasupu Kumkuma then….. Rythu Bandhu now……

2

Welfare schemes are passports to success. They entice people and lure them to vote for a particular party. They are like magnets that attract the voters. But, if properly not planned, they can end up as potential booby traps for those who laid them. Election eve sops can be like double-edged swords. They could end up slivering those who use them.

The Rythu Bandhu was a success for the TRS and it helped rain votes for KCR. But, the Dalit Bandhu was a disaster. It failed to enthuse the Dalits and ended up alienating the non-Dalits. What is important is that the scheme should inspire confidence and must have clear-cut execution mechanism. Without these, the sops could end up becoming counter-productive.

Ahead of the 2019 elections, Chandrababu Naidu too brought the Pasupu Kumkuma scheme to entice women voters. He even allocated Rs 10000 crore for the sceheme, which envisaged giving Rs 10000 to the DWCRA women groups. In fact, he has diverted the amounts kept apart for other schemes. In the process, the other schemes floundered and the people saw through the game of election-eve sops. In the end, Jagan won and Chandrababu sank along with his Pasupu Kumkuma.

Ditto with the Dalit Bandhu scheme. The voters felt this to be an election-eve gimmick The Dalits saw it as a sop that will vanish soon after the election. The non-Dalits began demanding similar ‘Bandhu’ scheme for them. The end result was that both the groups shunned the TRS and caused a humiliating defeat. As they say, those who tout election-eve schemes are going to sink with them.

BJP demands Telangana govt slash VAT on petrol, diesel

0

The BJP in Telangana demanded the TRS government slash Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel as done by the BJP-ruled states after the Centre cut the excise duty on fuel.

State BJP chief Bandi Sanjay demanded that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) reduce VAT to provide relief to common man. He pointed out that many BJP-ruled states proactively reduced VAT after the BJP-led government at the Centre announced excise duty reduction on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 per litre, respectively.

BJP MLA Raja Singh demanded that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao announce reduction in VAT on petrol and diesel, noting that the TRS had been criticising BJP for hike in petrol and diesel prices during the campaign for Huzurabad Assembly by-election.

Claiming that Telangana is charging Rs.41 in the form of VAT per litre of petrol, the BJP leader said the state can cut the price by at least Rs 8. “This will bring down the petrol price in the state to Rs 100,” he said.

Following the Centre’s announcement on Wednesday, the petrol price in Hyderabad came down to Rs 108.18 per litre on Thursday from Rs 114.47, a drop of Rs.6.29. The price of diesel also dropped by Rs 12.78 – from Rs 107.40 to Rs 94.62.

Among the BJP-ruled states, Karnataka has announced a drastic cut by reducing the state’s share of sales tax on petrol from 35 per cent to 25.9 per cent, and on diesel from 24 per cent to 14.34 per cent.

Petrol in Karnataka has become cheaper by Rs 13.30 and diesel by Rs 19 per litre compared to the prices on Wednesday.

While the TRS government has not responded to the demands, some leaders of the ruling party pointed out that VAT automatically comes down with the cut in excise duty. TRS leader Krishank described separate statements by the BJP as a publicity stunt.

Telangana’s Industry Minister and TRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao re-tweeted Krishank’s tweet.

Krishnak also pointed out that while Telangana has not increased VAT for the last six years, the Centre increased the excise duty by 400 per cent during the same period.

In 2014 the VAT in Telangana was 31 per cent and it was increased to 35.2 per cent in 2015 but there has been no increase since then. The TRS leader tagged a chart to show how the Centre increased the excise duty. In 2014, when the petrol price was Rs 71.41 per litre, the Centre’s excise duty was Rs.9.48. The Centre increased the excise duty to Rs 22.98 in 2020 and further to Rs 32.98 in 2021.
