From 200 theatres to 12,000 screens, the stellar journey of Kannada film industry

0

The Kannada film industry has never been short of high ambition, aspirational directors and producers who wanted to put the industry on the national map. Though yeomen efforts were made in this direction since the 1990s, it could garner commercial success and acceptance only in 2022 with ‘KGF Chapter: 2’.

Veterans say that it was a matter of pride if Kannada movies were released in 200 theatres across the country. ‘KGF Chapter: 2’ has been released in more than 12,000 screens. If the Chinese market opens up, the movie would get 20,000 to 30,000 screens. They recall that whenever they visited the US, people would talk about Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. Now, they are talking about Rocking Star Yash.

They still remember how the Kannada film teams would hunt for the cheapest available slots, how they would have to wait until the big ticket movies in Telugu and Tamil languages would complete their shoot for their turn at the studios in Chennai.

Kannada films were just brushed away by other industries. It was the love of Kannadigas, love for the language that the industry thrived on with low budget movies and finally arrived on the national stage.

The movie ‘Africadalli Sheela’, a fantasy adventure film released in 1986, produced and directed by Dwarakish was one such notable effort. It was made on similar lines as the Hollywood film ‘Sheena’. This was the first Indian film to have been shot in the African forests. The music was composed by Bappi Lahiri. The remake version was released in Hindi starring Nana Patekar. However, the grand success eluded the team.

The hopes of the Kannada film industry rose with ‘Muttinahaara’, a 1990 Kannada war drama directed and produced by veteran director Dr Rajendra Singh Babu. Later Kannada superstar Vishnuvardhan starrer bombed at the box office, making producers turn to low-budget movies.

Kannada film industry showman V. Ravichandran’s ambitious project ‘Shanthi Kranthi’ was simultaneously shot in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. The film starred V. Ravichandran and Juhi Chawla. Tamil superstar Rajinikanth was the lead in Hindi and Tamil, while superstar Nagarjuna was the lead in Telugu.

Pegged as the most expensive movie of the Kannada film industry, it also failed to make a mark or achieve commercial success. At a time when high budget movies bombed at the box office, hopes were again raised with the release of ‘Om’ in 1995.

The movie was directed by Kannada star director and superstar Upendra and Shivarajkumar played the lead role. The film managed to garner huge success and even national film makers appreciated the movie. It was remade as ‘Arjun Pandit’ in Hindi starring Sunny Deol.

Somehow, the Kannada film industry never got the attention of the film world. Darling Krishna, the Kannada superstar, producer and director of super hit ‘Love Mocktail 2’ explained that the process of globalisation, liberalisation and privatisation which started in the 1990s has turned into a reality for the Kannada film industry in 2022 with the success of ‘KGF Chapter: 2’.

“This is a matter of pride. The movie showed the market for the industry. It is a matter of joy and big achievement. Before I came to the film industry, during study days, we had seen how other language guys would talk so highly of movies from other states. Though we tried to talk about Kannada movies, they wouldn’t take it seriously,” Darling Krishna explained.

“What happened with ‘KGF Chapter: 2’ is magic. It is the result of team work. Getting a team like that on board is a challenging task. To compete at the national level, a huge budget is required. They spend about Rs 30 crore to Rs 40 crore just on advertising,” he said.

Sudhakar Bhandari, senior producer and director, explained that there was a time when senior producers would reach Chennai and wait for the other languages cinemas to pack up and search for the cheapest available floor to shoot. The path was not easy, the Kannada film industry grew stage by stage.

Though Kannada films won national awards, with budget constraints, the industry was not able to match the audio-visual grandeur of other language movies, he explains.

Sudhakar Bhandari remembers amidst all the compulsions, how veterans came up with movies like ‘Babruvahana’ which could be compared to Hollywood movie ‘Ben Hur’. With very limited facilities, limitations, the special effects and experimentation was a great effort, he says.

‘KGF Chapter: 2’ has changed all that. “I got a call from Bombay. In the conversation they said ‘sab south ka samachar hai’ (it’s everything about south now). I must appreciate the young men who took up the challenge, never bogged down, and believed in their dreams. They have got the passion, which is a good development for the Kannada film industry,” he says.

The southern movies which made a mark in north India like ‘KGF’, ‘Pushpa’, ‘RRR’, ‘Baahubali’ were close to nativity. Indian software professionals have world class talent. They are working for foreign companies. If their talent is utilised for creative work, world class products in the entertainment sector can be achieved, he says.

KGF 2 Impact: No releases this Friday

0

KGF: Chapter 2 is a smashing box-office hit in all the released languages across the globe. After a packed weekend, the film is having a steady run during weekdays. Three Tollywood movies Ashoka Vanamlo Arjuna Kalyanam, Jayamma Panchayathi and Krishna Vrinda Vihari are announced for release this Friday. But all the films have now walked out of the race and are pushed to May and June. Megastar Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan starrer Acharya is due for release on April 29th.

Releasing small films between two biggies is not a good move and hence all the films walked out of the race. The audience too are not much interested to watch small movies in this season. Two small films 1996 Dharmapuri and Bommala Koluvu are releasing this Friday after the prominent releases are postponed. In Bollywood, Shahid Kapoor starrer Jersey is releasing this Friday. Shahid is very confident about the film and Jersey is heading for a record release in North India this Friday.

Yash and Prashanth Neel to share profits of KGF: Chapter 2

KGF: Chapter 2 is the new biggest hit of the country and the film is raking massive revenues in all the languages. The makers released the film on their own and the distributors paid huge advances after the makers promised to offer Prabhas’ Salaar if they fail to recover the investments. The film’s budget and the remunerations are kept under wraps. After the first installment ended up as a super hit, Prashanth Neel wanted a budget hike and the makers agreed for the same. The film’s lead actor Yash who played Rocky Bhai and the director Prashanth Neel will share the profits from KGF: Chapter 2.

With the second installment gaining humongous buzz, all the theatrical and non-theatrical deals are closed for hefty prices. The makers too agreed to share the profits with Prashanth Neel and Yash. After a small break, Prashanth Neel will resume the shoot of Salaar featuring Prabhas and the film is now high on expectations. Pan India star: Real test for Yash starts now

KGF Chapter 2 is running successfully in theatres. The movie that has made Yash a pan India star comes to an end now. Even though the makers are planning for chapter 3, it may take a few years to start on that project. So, the analysts opine, the real test for Yash starts now. Details as follows.

After Bahubali series, Prabhas also has faced this problem. After working on a mammoth project like Bahubali and earning the pan India star tag, Prabhas wanted to continue the same scale on other projects as well. However there are not many directors in the country who conceive and execute such pan India level projects. Yash has now completed KGF and he is yet to sign the next project while his director Prashant Neil already working on Salar project. The problem for Yash is also the same that , there are not many directors in Kannada Film industry who can equate Prashant Neil capabilities. So, Yash may have to look at the directors from other languages. But top directors in Telugu have all blocked their time for next couple years and so he may need to look at the directors from Tamil or Hindi. On the other hand there is no dearth of producers as everybody wants to cash on the craze that Yash has just earned.

We need to wait and see whether Yash will be able to make right decisions and set right projects to continue the tag of Pan Indian star.

KGF-2 Review : Works Only For Elevations

KGF Chapter2 Movie Review

KGF2 Movie Review

After the humongous success of KGF: Chapter 1, the sequel is high on expectations. Titled KGF: Chapter 2, the trailer and the promotional content caught everyone’s attention. Yash, Srinidhi Shetty, Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj will be seen in pivotal roles in KGF: Chapter 2. Prashanth Neel is the director and Hombale Films is the producer. Here is the review of KGF : Chapter 2

Story:
Similar to the KGF Chapter 1, Anand Vasiraju’s son Vijayendra Vasiraju (Prakash Raj) narrates the Chapter 2 to a TV Channel Editor. Chapter 2 begins with Rocky Bhai ‘s life at the mining city Narachi. Rocky fights with two systems in this film one being the Adheera Gang and second one is the Indian government.

Analysis:

The success of KGF Chapter 1 can be attributed to two factors. First and foremost, the director had succeeded in heroism elevation, second that the audience are well connected to the rise of underdog Rocky Bhai. The story in chapter 1 had well connected sequences as it progresses. In Chapter 2, The heroism elevation sequences go to next level and there are at least 3-4 sequences each would have costed a bomb to the producers. The brief introduction sequence, Adheera Entrance, Interval sequence and Mind-boggling sequence right after the interval and another high voltage action block in climax make this film a visual grandeur. But, the effectiveness of these technically brilliant scenes is not a comparable to chapter 1. The Mad max film influence can be seen in making of the KGF. Post interval scene is an epic in terms of scale.

On flip side, the Adheera Vs Rocky conflict hasn’t been properly established. The Rocky vs Prime minister thread is superficial. Rocky going straight to PMO to warn the Prime minister, Rocky directly entering the parliament hall to kill the political leader etc. scenes cannot be categorized as heroism elevation. A poor screenplay can be felt at times. A very tragic mother sentiment song is instantly followed by a duet between Rocky and Reena. And entire climax episodes are too farce. These may be excused by masses though.

Ravi’s background score is good; however, it is too loud in few scenes. Bhuwan Gowda’s cinematography is Excellent. Production values by Hombale films are extraordinary they might had shelled out few hundreds of crores on this film

Positives:
Prasanth Neel’s extremely high scale setting in action episodes
Highest spent production values

Negatives:
Story is weaker, Confusing screenplay
Adheera’s Villainy didn’t work out
Convoluted second half

Verdict:
KGF2 is good at delivering action sequences, but not up to the mark in storytelling. This film is heavy, over-the- top and focusses nothing else than Heroism elevation. Director has made few extravaganza shots that go well with KGF Fans. An average affair for regular moviegoers, satisfactory for the cult of KGF.

Prashanth Neel about the journey of KGF

1

KGF started as a Kannada film and it is now a pan-Indian project. It was Prashanth Neel’s vision that made the first installment a super hit and paved path for a sequel. Explaining about the journey of KGF, Prashanth Neel said “We started the journey of the film in the mid of 2014. After Hombale Films agreed to do the film, we approached Yash and got his nod. I took a year to complete the script of KGF and the shoot commenced in early 2017. None among us made such a big movie before. It is our journey and hard work which made KGF a huge project”.

He said “I thank Yash and my production house for the immense support throughout the journey. A month after the shoot, I got the idea of making KGF into two parts. We took a break for a month and completed the screenplay of the film. After the first installment ended up as a massive hit, I got ample budget for the sequel. KGF: Chapter 2 would be emotional and action-packed. We picked up the right actors and the biggest conflict in the film is between Yash and Sanjay Dutt”. KGF: Chapter 2 is gearing up for a record release tomorrow.

0
