Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation P Ashok Gajapathi Raju said that they are ready to build an airport in Nellore district. He attributed the delay, to land acquisition issue. Raju who visited the district today, said they are facing a problem in obtaining a small site. Subsequently, measures are being taken to resolve the issue and start the construction of airport.

Earlier in March, District Collector R. Mutyala Raju said that all the procedures of the project were being taken forward and there was no scope for any apprehensions.

In February 2016, the Union civil aviation ministry has given a nod for site clearance for airports at Dagadarthi in Nellore. The Nellore airport is likely to come up on around 1,352 acres at a cost of Rs 224 crore. The greenfield airport will be ‘no-frills’ which means it will have immediate traffic potential.

It is one of the 50 locations identified by the Central Government of India for the development of low-cost airports by the Airports Authority of India in order to improve connectivity to remote areas. The airport once operational would be advantageous for the people from Nellore, Prakasam districts and to some extent for the people in the border areas,
