What Happened To The Good Old Comedy In Tollywood These Days?

4

One should accept that Tollywood has changed a lot. Unlike olden days, the young and talented directors are flaunting their bold and unique ideas on silver screen and even the seniors from the industry are extending their support and appreciating their efforts. But one thing that has been lacking in Telugu movies right now is the comedy. When is the last time, you roll on the floor laughing last time while watching a Telugu movie? These days, few directors have completely changed the meaning of comedy.

If you remember the movies of legendary director Jandhyala, you will get to know the real meaning of comedy. From Jambalakadi Pamba to Chantabbai, the director has presented the rib-tickling comedy on screen and those are pure classics. Even though there are many films are releasing every year in the comedy genre, but we can count on fingers for good comedies.

Movies like Vivahabojanambu, Aha Naa Pellanta, and others are the perfect treat for the audience who are craving for some good sense of humor. Almost all the 80’s and 90’s movies are pure and classics in the history of TFI. After that, the comedy genre changed its name to either body shaming or insulting someone irrespective of their age on screen. Making people laugh has become a difficult task for today’s generation directors and it’s easy for them to make the audience fall in love and feel the pain. The iconic characters like Kota Srinivasa Rao, Sutti Veerabhadram hasn’t found any replacement even today.

But there are few directors who are trying to present the pure comedy on screen and keeping alive the hopes of Telugu audience that the good old days and movies like that will return back to them. Films like Pelli Choopulu, Ami Tumi, and others are few films that received a huge applause from the audience for the pure classic comedy presented by the young directors. These movies got decent success at the box office and proved that Telugu audience is still craving for classic comedy rather than routine stuff. Movies like Anando Brahma and Raja The Great have managed to tickle the funny bones of the audience.

Even though it is good for the Tollywood to accept and appreciate movies with bold concepts, the industry desperately needs a revolution in films that purely based on comedy genres. Let’s hope this will also change one day.
