The election process for Municipal Chairpersons and Vice Chairpersons in Telangana remains incomplete after polls were postponed in eleven municipalities. Officials announced deferment in Dornakal, Jangaon, Thorrur, Yellandu, Kyathanpally, Khanapur, Zaheerabad, Sultanabad, Kagaznagar, Ibrahimpatnam, and Indresham. In most of these towns, elections were put off due to lack of quorum and procedural disruptions.
Jangaon witnessed the most dramatic scenes. Police imposed Section 144 around the municipal office and deployed heavy security. MLA Palla Rajeshwar Reddy arrived with 15 councillors who were said to be backing him. Police stopped the bus after a complaint alleged that a councillor from Ward 28 had been taken against her will. An FIR was registered based on the complaint. Heated arguments followed between the MLA and police officials. BRS workers raised slogans and police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Inside the council hall, both BRS and Congress groups proposed their candidates after members took the oath. Congress leaders alleged that elected councillors were being pressured and demanded that the election be postponed until an inquiry was completed. After protests inside the hall, the Municipal Commissioner deferred the election to the next day. The MLA and his supporters staged a protest at the municipal office gate.
In Ibrahimpatnam, chaos during the meeting led to a postponement. Reports of stone pelting near the municipal office heightened tension before police intervened. In Dornakal and Yellandu, elections were deferred due to lack of required attendance. In Indresham of Sangareddy district, officials also cited the absence of quorum as the reason for postponement.
While some municipalities faced disruption, others saw clear political outcomes.
In Kothagudem, Congress and CPI joined forces to secure control. Ganesh from CPI was finalized as Mayor and Lalitha Kumari from Congress became Deputy Mayor.
Adilabad delivered a major upset for the BJP. Despite holding 21 seats along with two ex officio votes, the party failed to capture the municipal chairperson post. A Congress rebel candidate emerged victorious in an unexpected result.
Kamareddy witnessed a significant twist when BRS councillors extended support to Congress. With their backing, Uma Rani from Congress was elected Municipal Chairperson.
In Nizamabad, Congress secured the Mayor’s seat with support from AIMIM. Uma Rani was elected Mayor while Salma Tahseen from AIMIM became Deputy Mayor.
Jagtial reflected internal political balancing. Samilla Vani, aligned with MLA Sanjay’s group, was chosen as Municipal Chairperson. Zeenath Parveen, associated with the Jeevan Reddy faction, was given the Vice Chairperson position.
In Ramagundam Municipal Corporation, Mahankali Swamy from Congress was elected as Mayor, while Patipelli Ellayya, also from Congress, took charge as Deputy Mayor.
In Nalgonda Municipal Corporation, Murri Chaitanya Srinivasa Reddy from Congress was elected as Mayor, while Mohammed Ashraf Ali Amar assumed office as Deputy Mayor.
In the Mahabubnagar Municipal Corporation, Gumal Mamatha from Congress was elected as Mayor and Surender Reddy from Congress became Deputy Mayor.
In Mancherial Municipal Corporation, Madhukar from Congress took charge as Mayor, with Ramya Mahesh from Congress elected as Deputy Mayor.
In Karimnagar, the BJP formally proposed Kolagani Srinivas as Mayor and Sunil Rao as Deputy Mayor. The party submitted their names to election authorities as part of its strategy to secure the corporation.
The postponement of elections in eleven municipalities highlights the fragile political arithmetic in several urban bodies. Hung councils and shifting alliances have turned routine chairperson selections into intense contests. Fresh polling dates are expected soon, but political negotiations are likely to continue behind the scenes before final leadership structures are decided.
