The debate over land reforms in Andhra Pradesh has taken a fresh political turn, with the YSR Congress Party shifting its strategy to take on the ruling coalition government. As the TDP BJP alliance pushes ahead with its own approach to land governance, YSRCP has moved to bring the issue onto the national stage.
At the centre of the controversy is the repeal of the Andhra Pradesh Land Titling Act, which was introduced during the tenure of former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. The current government, led by Nara Chandrababu Naidu, scrapped the law soon after assuming office, citing concerns over its impact and intent. YSRCP now argues that the decision was driven more by politics than policy.
According to the party, the land titling law was framed in line with reforms encouraged by the Centre to reduce land disputes and improve investor confidence. Senior YSRCP leader Dharmana Prasada Rao has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his intervention in the matter. In his letter, he stated that repealing the Act could weaken foreign investment prospects and slow progress towards national goals such as Make in India and Viksit Bharat.
YSRCP leaders claim that a clear land titling system is essential for economic growth and legal certainty. They also see the issue as an opportunity to place pressure on the coalition and expose differences between its partners.
With land reforms becoming a political flashpoint once again, the issue is expected to dominate debates in Andhra Pradesh. Whether the Centre responds to the appeal or the state government holds its ground remains to be seen, but the battle over land laws is far from over.
