Kohli, Rohit end 2019 at top of ICC ODI batsmen rankings

0

India skipper Virat Kohli and opener Rohit Sharma ended the year on a glorious note after remaining static at the first and second position in the ICC ODI rankings for batsmen. While Kohli has 887 points to his name, Rohit followed him with 873 points.

Rohit Sharma amassed 2,442 runs across formats in 2019. The dashing Mumbai batsman also surpassed Sri Lankan great Sanath Jayasuriya’s 22-year-old record for most runs as an opener in a calendar year across formats.

Earlier on Sunday, Rohit was also named Man of the Series as India chased down 316 to win the three-match ODI rubber against the West Indies 2-1 in Cuttack as the opener contributed with a valiant 63-run knock.

Meanwhile, Windies opener Shai Hope also entered the top 10 of the rankings after showing fine form in the three-match series against India. The wicketkeeper-batsman gained five places to reach ninth position after scoring 222 runs in the series including an unbeaten 102 in the opening match in Chennai, which his side won before going down in Visakhapatnam and Cuttack.

Hope’s teammate Shimron Hetmyer jumped six places to be at the 19th spot while Nicholas Pooran vaulted 33 places to be at the 30th position in the rankings.

2nd ODI: Rohit, Rahul tons lead Indian carnage in Vizag

0

Rohit Sharma, K.L. Rahul led with centuries while Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant unleashed an astonishing late assault as India posted a mammoth 387/5 against West Indies in the second ODI at the VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

Rohit hit a magnificent 159 and Rahul made 102 as they put up an opening stand of 227 runs. After Indian captain Virat Kohli was dismissed for a rare golden duck, Pant and Iyer put up a 73-run stand for the fourth wicket off just 25 balls.

Earlier, West Indies won the toss and chose to field first in Visakhapatnam. Rahul and Rohit took their time in constructing their innings, scoring just 55 runs in the first 10 overs. They played cautiously in the first 15 overs and a mix-up almost got Rohit out at the non-striker’s end.

But all that changed soon as the pair started teeing off after the first 20 overs with Rahul hitting consecutive fours off Alzarri Joseph in the 21st which produced 14 runs. Rohit raised his 43rd fifty off the last ball of the next over. Rahul was quicker than him in getting there, doing so in the 16th over.

However, Rohit ended up overtaking him on the way to their respective centuries. He was dropped on 70 by Shimron Hetmyer as the latter failed to pocket a simple catch at long-on.

Rohit reached his hundred in the 34th over while Rahul reached there two overs later. The pair started to try and up the ante after crossing three figures and Rahul fell in the process. He was dismissed in the same over as he scored his ton, with Joseph forcing an edge off the right hander and third man taking the catch off the last ball of the over. Rahul walked back for a well-made 102.

Rohit hit a four off the very next ball and took a single to bring Kohli on strike. West Indies captain Kieron Pollard, bowling for the first time in the day, sent in a short, slow ball outside off that took the top edge of Kohli’s bat. It went straight down the throat of the short mid-wicket and Kohli was dismissed off the very first ball he faced. Pollard would bowl only one more over in the match.

Rohit kept pushing on and soon raised his 150. It looked like he was primed for making a record extending fourth double ODI ton but ended up falling to Sheldon Cottrell in the 44th over on 159.

That was only the start of the pain for West Indies however as Pant came in and made his intentions clear with a six off the second ball he faced. He hit another six two balls later and then a single to take strike as Cottrell came back for the 46th over.

Pant hit two sixes and three fours in that over, thus taking 24 runs off it. Iyer gave Roston Chase an even worse pasting in the next, smashing four sixes and a four. 31 runs were scored off the 47th.

Pant was dismissed in the next over and Iyer after that while Kedar Jadhav hit three fours off the last one as India just failed to cross the 400-run mark.

Brief Scores: India 387/5 (Rohit Sharma 159, KL Rahul 102; Sheldon Cottrell 2/83)

Bradmanesque! Rohit has an average of 98.22 at home

0

Rohit Sharma turned a new leaf on Wednesday as he not only scored a century in his first innings as a Test opener to put India in the driver’s seat at the end of the opening day of the first Test against South Africa but also equalled Don Bradman’s record of having a batting average of 98.22 at home.

While Bradman had an average of 98.22 after 50 innings at home with 4322 runs in his kitty, Rohit has 884 runs after 15 innings with the same average.

Speaking at the end of the day’s play, Rohit insisted that his plan was to trust his game and abilities and that’s what he was able to achieve as he remained unbeaten on 115 at stumps on the opening day.

“I wanted to take the opportunity and that’s why I made the management aware of it. I am grateful to them for providing me with the opportunity and I am happy I could score runs,” Rohit told reporters.

Talking about his batting plans in the initial overs, the 32-year-old said he wanted to see off the new ball and then cash in from thereafter.

“I was very clear in my mind what I wanted to do. The new ball will always do a bit in the initial overs — whether it’s red ball or white.

“I have played cricket in India for a long time now and that’s why I was aware of the conditions and knew that once you get past the first 10 overs, it becomes difficult to get wickets. And it becomes easier to score runs.

“This was my plan to tackle the new ball and then stick to what I had planned. Backing myself and my game was most important for me because it was all I had in my mind,” he added.

Posting a picture of the opener, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal wrote: “Real G.O.A.T”. Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh tweeted: “Wah @ImRo45 Brilliant 100.. dress blue ho ya white koi fark nahi padta.. Rohit HiT hai bhai (Brilliant ton by Rohit, it doesn’t matter whether he is in the ODI or Test team. He is a hit).”

ICC also acknowledged Rohit’s superb knock and said: “The HITMAN is back with a bang. Rohit Sharma gets his first Test ton as an opener!”

Former India opener and commentator Aakash Chopra also praised Rohit and tweeted: “4th Test Century. 1st as an opener. Rohit has grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Well played.”

It’s disrespectful, there is nothing between me & Rohit: Kohli

0

India skipper Virat Kohli quashed rumours of a rift in the team, saying he is baffled by talks of things not going well between him and vice-captain Rohit Sharma.

“In my opinion it’s baffling to be honest. It’s absolutely ridiculous to read such stuff that comes out. I have been to a few public events and the sentiment is “aap log kya khele (you guys played so well).

“We are feeding off lies. We are overlooking facts. We are turning a blind eye to all the good things that has happened. We are creating fantasies and scenarios in our head and want to accept that this is the truth,” Kohli said while addressing the pre-tour media conference here ahead of the West Indies tour.

“I have seen this for too long now. Bringing personal lives into the picture. It’s disrespectful after a moment. There is nothing between me and Rohit,” kohli said.

It all started when news was leaked in the media that a senior player had got his wife to stay with him for longer than the ‘family clause’ of the BCCI allows and that too without the permission of the captain and coach.

This after former CJI R.M. Lodha and senior BCCI officials questioned the decision of the Committee of Administrators (COA) to let the captain and coach decide on the travel plans of WAGs.

In a bizarre move, a Committee of Administrators (CoA) member had told IANS that the committee wouldn’t react to rumours of rift till the players approached them.

“The CoA cannot be reacting to reports in the media. If the players have any issue, they can/should bring it up with us. As far as the committee is concerned, there is no rift till the players talk of it with us,” the member had said.

The trouble apparently started brewing post the loss to England in the World Cup. The bowling unit supposedly felt humiliated post a team meeting after the defeat in the group-stage encounter.

“The bowlers were given a showdown after the loss and they felt that it wasn’t just a case of bad bowling and there were more areas that needed to be looked into before pointing fingers at the bowling unit,” a source in the know of developments had told IANS.

Another board functionary said that the reports of rift need to be addressed at the earliest to avoid a scenario wherein the performance of the team can start getting affected.

“It is like any other discord at a workplace which can affect the performance of the team. If this is not nipped in the bud immediately, there is a real danger of things affecting the spirit of the team and as a result, their performance.

“You cannot have two leaders of a team or their media teams taking pot-shots at one another. There is no denial of a rift and the big shot administrator says that it is a media creation. If that is the case why are they giving impetus to the media creation rather than dispelling it,” the functionary had said.

Did India player refuse to post ‘All’s Well’ message post rift reports?

0

The rift between senior players in the Indian ODI team appears to be getting wider by the day and the senior administrators of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are supposedly trying to douse the flames by getting one of the senior players to post messages of bonhomie within the team on social media.

Speaking to IANS, a senior board functionary said that one of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) members had spoken to a player and proposed the idea that he could write a message on social media that the team environment is “perfectly fine”.

“Everyone is aware that there is tension brewing and while the CoA has tried its best to deny any rumours of rift in the ODI team in the media, one of the members spoke to a senior player asking him to send out a positive message/statement in the matter. But not much progress has been made in this regard,” the functionary said.

In a bizarre move, a CoA member had told IANS that they wouldn’t get into this till the players bring it up with them.

“The CoA cannot be reacting to reports in the media. If the players have any issue, they can/should bring it up with us. As far as the committee is concerned, there is no rift till the players talk of it with us,” the member had said.

The CoA landed on sticky ground when Rohit Sharma “unfollowed” skipper Virat Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma on Instagram.

The trouble apparently started brewing post the loss to England in the World Cup. The bowling unit supposedly felt humiliated post a team meeting after the defeat in the group-stage encounter.

Is there cold ‘Insta war’ brewing between Rohit, Anushka?

0

After Rohit Sharma “unfollowed” Anushka Sharma on Instagram, the actor-wife of India captain Virat Kohli shared a story on the photo-sharing website that appeared to be pointed at the India vice-captain amid reports of rift between the skipper and his deputy.

On Friday, Anushka posted a message on her Instagram Stories which read: “A wise man once said nothing. Only truth can shake hands with silence in a mess of false appearances.”

In spite of being the second hot favourite for the recent World Cup title held in England and Wales, the Men in Blue failed and emotions since then have spilled out of the India dressing room.

Although both Rohit and Kohli have not spoken anything on the rumoured rift, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) said that the matter will not be taken into consideration unless the same is brought to them by the players themselves.

Even Rohit’s social media activity has added fuel to fire.

The 32-year-old, who has not been following Kohli for quite some time, apparently also “unfollowed” Anushka on Instagram.

What is more surprising is that Kohli still follows Rohit on the picture-sharing website, but not his wife Ritika Sajdeh.

Anushka also doesn’t follow Ritika and Rohit on Instagram and same is the case with Ritika who doesn’t follow the Indian skipper and his wife.

Rohit smashes record for most centuries in one World Cup

0

Rohit Sharma became the batsman with the most number of centuries in a single World Cup when he slammed his fifth hundred of the ongoing edition against Sri Lanka in India’s last group stage encounter at the Headingley Cricket Ground on Saturday.

The India vice-captain, who was tied with Kumar Sangakkara with four centuries, got past the former Sri Lanka captain against his own team by milking Kasun Rajitha for a four down the square leg boundary after playing three dot balls in the 29th over.

Overall, this was Rohit’s six World Cup hundred with one coming against Bangladesh in the quarterfinal of the 2015 edition.

Rohit has taken the World Cup by storm since Day 1, scoring 122 not out against South Africa in India’s opening game. After that, Rohit had scores of 57, 140, 1, 18, 102 and 104 before the Sri Lanka match.

Rohit looked in sublime touch from the word go after Sri Lanka posted 264/7 in 50 overs, a score which is incidentally Rohit’s highest in ODI cricket, which also came against the Lankans.

During the course of his innings, the ace opener also became the highest run-getter in the group stages of a single World Cup.

Rohit went past Shakib Al Hasan’s tally of 606 runs in eight innings when he reached 63. On Friday, Shakib broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record made in the 2003 edition when the Master Blaster scored 586 runs in nine innings in the group stages.

The leading scorer in the ongoing World Cup, Rohit also became the second Indian after Tendulkar to amass over 600 runs in a single edition of the showpiece event.

Mathew Hayden had scored 580 runs in the group stages of the 2007 World Cup to be placed fourth in the list now.

Big score against SL can help Rohit break 3 WC records

0

India’s vice-captain Rohit Sharma has justified his tag as one of the best limited overs batsmen thus far at the ongoing World Cup.

The 32-year-old has scored four centuries in seven innings, and his current tally of 544 runs makes him the highest run-getter in the tournament.

India’s next match against Sri Lanka on Saturday is also their final group game. While India are already through to the semifinals and Sri Lanka are out of contention, Rohit can set his eyes on breaking three major World Cup batting records.

Rohit is currently tied with former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara for most number of centuries in a single edition of the World Cup. The 104 that he scored against Bangladesh in India’s previous match was his fourth of the tournament. If he can get to three figures against Sri Lanka, he will surpass Sangakkara who had slammed four tons in the 2015 World Cup.

Rohit is also currently third on the list of highest run-getters in the group stage of World Cup. However, the two players above him are not too far away — Mathew Hayden had second 580 runs in the group stages of the 2007 World Cup while Sachin Tendulkar had amassed 586 runs in 2003. Rohit is now 42 runs away from surpassing the master blaster.

Rohit also has fair competition in this respect. Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan is playing against Pakistan on Friday and the all-rounder is on 542, runs while Australia’s David Warner and Aaron Finch have got 516 and 504 runs, respectively. Australia will play South Africa in the final group game of the tournament on Saturday.

Finally comes the big record of most runs ever scored in a single World Cup. Rohit is currently fifth on this list and is 129 runs away from record holder Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 673 runs in the 2003 World Cup. If he scores a big century against Sri Lanka on Saturday, Rohit can surpass that record despite playing two matches less than the legendary former batsman.

Rohit is the ‘best one-day player’: Kohli

0

India skipper Virat Kohli was all praise for Rohit Sharma who scored a brilliant century against Bangladesh and termed him as the “best one-day player”.

On Tuesday, Sharma (104) scored his fourth century of the ongoing World Cup, thus helping India post 314/9 which they successfully defended at Edgbaston.

The Indian vice-captain became only the second batsman after Kumar Sangakkara to hit four hundreds in a single World Cup and in the process became the leading run-scorer in this edition of the tournament.

Rohit unfurled a flurry of strokes and played with a lot of freedom while sharing a 180-run opening partnership with K.L. Rahul. During his 32-ball inning, Rohit hit five huge sixes and seven boundaries.

“I have been watching it for years now, I have been saying it publicly, in my opinion Rohit is the best one-day player. When he plays, we are heading towards a big score and really happy with the way he’s playing,” said Kohli at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“When he plays well we know we are heading for a big score. He gives everyone confidence to go out and bat,” he added.

He also praised the Bangla Tigers for putting up a great fight and said: “Bangladesh played some really good cricket and deserve credit for the fight they put up. We had to work hard for the win and we are happy to see a ‘Q’ (qualified) in front of our name now.”

India, who have secured their berth in the semifinals, will now face Sri Lanka in their last group stage game at Headingley, Leeds on Saturday. “Another game as an opportunity for us to do the same things we have done so far in the tournament, and I think that will keep us in the frame of mind heading towards the semi-final,” said the Indian skipper.

No.4 batting position ideal for Dhoni, says Rohit

0

India captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday said that the team management feels veteran Mahendra Singh Dhoni will excel at the No.4 batting position after the wicket-keeper stroked an unbeaten 39 during 93-run win over Sri Lanka in the first Twenty20 International (T20I).

Dhoni blasted 39 off just 22 deliveries with the help of four fours and a six as India posted 180/3 in 20 overs on a two-paced wicket.

The 36-year-old right-hander shared an unbeaten 68-run stand with Manish Pandey (32 not out off 18).

Rohit said that Dhoni can bat freely at the No.4 position, not taking pressure in finishing the innings.

“He didn’t get much batting in the ODIs but shows that class is permanent. We expect a lot from him and No.4 position paid off. He is someone who’s played and won so many games, so moving forward we feel, in this format, he can bat at No.4 will be ideal which can allow Manish (Pandey) and Dinesh (Karthik) to finish the innings,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“For a long time, MS has taken up the role of finishing and we feel it’s time for someone else to do the job. MS can play freely in the middle.”

Rohit was all praise for leg-spinner Yuzvender Chahal (4/23) and left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav (2/18) who helped India bowl Sri Lanka out for 87.

“Those two guys (Chahal and Kuldeep), if you look at their careers over the last few months, they have always been a wicket-taking option in the middle. It’s important to understand what the team expects them and they’ve delivered. They don’t fail to impress us,” he said.

Rohit Sharma spoke up for the rested-rotated players

0

Not a day passes without a spicy cricket story hitting the headlines, be it the pay dispute in Australia, the run-ins between cricket administrators in India or selling Television right of the Indian Premier League.

In between India’s national selectors have snatched their time in the sun, resting, rotating or dropping players without taking them into confidence, thus sending them highly complicated and confusing signals.

From time to time we are being assured that Virat Kohli’s team is the best in the business and that there is no reason why they should not smash every conceivable record. This is all living in the present and that, perhaps, is the right thing to do whatever future may hold for him and the team.

Without going into stats which in any case are flying around, India have done exceptionally well in the last year or so as most key series’ have been played at home.

Yet, to say India have dominated world cricket both at home and away, is a little fanciful. Yes, their record at home has been awesome, considering they have overwhelmed England and Australia, their overseas success is limited to winning in the West Indies and Sri Lanka.

One can argue that both Sri Lanka and West Indies had been World Cup winners in the past, but today both are struggling to make the cut directly for the 2019 World Cup in England. Their actual overseas campaign in any form of the game begins when they go to South Africa early next year when they play four Tests, five One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 matches.

Actually, Sri Lanka were to revisit South Africa for a three-Test series and India were to host Pakistan over the year-end. South Africa found out that the present Sri Lankan team will not attract the spectators and they instead invited India for the long tour. India were ready as there is little likelihood of India hosting or visiting Pakistan in the foreseeable future, at least till 2019, the World XI trip to Lahore for a three one-dayers notwithstanding.

Right now the Australians are here to play five one-dayers, all day-night games, at a time when the departing monsoon can cause problems at a couple of centres.

The Australians were Bangladesh to play two Test matches before coming here and after looking like at seas against the spin in the first Test, which they lost, they recovered well in time to win the second comfortably to split the series. The result should give them the confidence to take on the Indian spin which has a new look with two wrist spinners in the line-up.

If playing two wrist spinners is the news it also begged questions about resting or dropping of two of the best spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

To be fair to both the wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal and national selectors, who reposed faith in them, the two young spinners deserved a longer run after their good showing in Sri Lanka.

The intriguing part of the selection is that the two premier pacers Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav are back from rest whereas the same consideration was not shown to Ashwin and Jadeja.

It is now clear that both the spinners were not rested as they were desperate to play and went to England for a county stint. It is said that Ashwin excused from playing the end of the season matches thinking he would be in the side to play the Australians.

If they are rested, vice-captain Rohit Sharma spoke up for all the players, wondering what’s this rest-and-rotate- policy is all about, he himself was rested after the Champions Trophy and not picked for the West Indies tour.

He says he wouldn’t like a rest as he wants to play as much as he can without a break in the “limited career.” He has rubbed it in, saying there is no such thing as burnout or tight schedule.

It is all in the realm of speculation as neither the selectors nor the board has come out with a reasoned explanation to scotch speculation and rumour. The board is busy in its internecine wars with the Committee of Administrators (COA) breathing down its neck.

As for the series itself, both teams are dependant on their stalwarts and both go in without two of the hardest hitting openers Shikhar Dhawan and Aaron Finch, though the latter may recover from his calf injury resting for a couple of games.

More than the Australians, the young Indian side will be in focus as it is being touted as Kohli-Ravi Shastri squad. They are out to convey a definite message to some stars.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is safe for the time being, Shastri can’t imagine an India side without Dhoni in 2019.
