In a major relief to the handloom sector, the Andhra Pradesh government has rolled out several welfare measures aimed at improving the lives of thousands of weavers across the state. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, during a recent review meeting, announced that the state will now bear the entire GST cost on handloom products. This move fulfills a key election promise and directly benefits both the producers and consumers of handwoven textiles.
To ease the financial burden on weavers, the government will also provide free electricity for up to 200 units for handloom workers and 500 units for powerloom operators. This scheme, which is expected to cost the state around ₹125 crore, is anticipated to benefit nearly 93,000 weaver families. Importantly, even if a family uses more than the free limit, the government will still cover the cost up to the eligible units, with only the extra usage charged.
Adding to this support, the Chief Minister announced a ₹5 crore Weaver Thrift Fund to ensure economic security for weavers during times of need. These measures will be implemented from August 7, marking National Handloom Day, a symbolic gesture that underscores the government’s commitment to this traditional sector.
The state is also stepping up social security for weavers by increasing pensions. From a modest ₹200 in earlier years, the pension amount was gradually increased to ₹3,000. Now, the current government has raised it further to ₹4,000, offering real support to elderly weavers who rely on it.
Officials shared that with lower production costs and zero GST, handloom products will now be available at more affordable prices, which is likely to increase sales and improve the earnings of weaver families.
These decisions reflect the AP government’s intent to revive and strengthen the handloom industry not just with words, but with meaningful action that touches lives directly.
