Logjam in Parliament continues over demonetisation issue

Both the houses of Parliament again adjourned for the day following Opposition uproar on the issue of demonetization. The Lok Sabha was adjourned twice before it was adjourned for the day amidst opposition continuing their demand for a debate on the issue under the rule which entails voting. As soon as the House met after first adjournment at noon, Mallikarjun Kharge of the Congress said, the discussion should start under any rule which has voting provisions.

Bhartruhari Mahatab of Biju Janata Dal suggested an immediate discussion on the inconvenience faced by people because of demonetization. Responding to it, Finance Minister Arun Jaitely said, the government is ready for a discussion. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said that the government wants a discussion on the issue without voting and send a message that the House is united to address the issue of black money. Earlier, when the House met for the day, Opposition led by Congress demanded an obituary reference to the jawans martyred in the Nagrota terror attack. The Speaker said that the combing operation is still continuing and the government is gathering the details about the incident. Expressing dissatisfaction, the opposition staged a brief walkout from the House.

In the Rajya Sabha, when the House re-assembled at noon after adjournment, Opposition members started shouting slogans. Earlier, when the House met for the day, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad demanded that the House should make an obituary reference to those martyred in the border areas and those people who reportedly died because of trauma while standing long queues for money withdrawals before banks and ATMs.

Leader of House, Arun Jaitley told the agitating members that the discussion on demonetisation is going on and the government is ready for a discussion on the issue at the border. Mayawati of BSP alleged that the government is not concerned about the prevailing situation in the country because of demonetisation.
