Amaravati is moving closer to becoming not just the administrative heart of Andhra Pradesh, but also a fully recognized postal hub with its own unique PIN code. This development follows the Union Government’s move to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act and formally establish Amaravati as the permanent capital of the state. The bill has already been approved in both Houses of Parliament and is now awaiting the President’s assent, which is expected soon.
As the capital status becomes more concrete, infrastructure planning is accelerating across sectors. One key step in this process is the allocation of a dedicated PIN code for Amaravati. This will mark a significant milestone in giving the city a distinct identity in India’s postal network.
The Department of Posts responded to a representation filed by advocate and social activist V. Ramesh Chandra Varma. He had sought clarity on when Amaravati would receive its PIN code and when a General Post Office would be established. In its reply, the department confirmed that land has already been acquired for the construction of a General Post Office in the capital region.
Officials stated that the new PIN code will be issued after the completion of the GPO building and after obtaining approval from the postal circle office. This approach ensures that the infrastructure is fully ready before the new postal identity is activated.
The department also indicated that the upcoming GPO will support essential services such as Aadhaar enrollment and passport facilitation. These services are expected to strengthen Amaravati’s position as a modern administrative capital. Until the new facility becomes operational, existing sub-post offices will continue to provide postal services in the region.
The Andhra Pradesh government has already allocated land for several central government offices in Amaravati. With multiple projects lined up, including the GPO, the city is steadily evolving into a fully functional capital. The introduction of a dedicated PIN code will further enhance governance, improve service delivery, and simplify communication for residents and institutions.
