The Central Government has cleared a major infrastructure project for the capital of Andhra Pradesh, Amaravati. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal to construct a Central Secretariat complex and residential quarters in Amaravati at a total cost of Rs 2,534 crore.
The project will be developed through the Central Public Works Department. Out of the total amount, Rs 1,299.08 crore will be spent on the Common Central Secretariat complex, while Rs 1,234.91 crore will go towards residential housing for central government employees.
The new Secretariat complex will bring several central government offices under one roof in Amaravati. The residential towers planned as part of the project will provide accommodation for employees working in central government departments based in the capital region.
The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority has already allocated 22.53 acres of land for the project. Around 5.53 acres will be used for the Secretariat buildings, while the remaining 17 acres will be used for residential complexes.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Cabinet for approving the project. He said the decision would strengthen the presence of central government institutions in Andhra Pradesh and improve coordination between departments.
The Chief Minister described the project as a major milestone in Amaravati’s development journey. He said modern and eco-friendly government buildings would help create strong administrative infrastructure for the future growth of the capital city.
Union Minister Pemmasani Chandrasekhar also welcomed the approval and said the Centre has shown a positive approach towards Amaravati’s development. He stated that the state government only provided land for the project while the entire construction cost would be borne by the Central Government.
According to Pemmasani, the construction of the central government buildings may take around three years to complete. He also highlighted that key projects like the Amaravati development plan, Central Secretariat and Outer Ring Road are crucial for the long-term growth of Andhra Pradesh.
The approval is being seen as another major boost for Amaravati as the state government pushes ahead with its vision of developing a world-class capital city with strong infrastructure and administrative facilities.
