Tollywood nosedives in first half of 2019 – Domestic half yearly report

Lack of big releases, not so big performance of those released and Tollywood nosedives in 2019. The 66 releases, year to date aggregated ₹355 crore share against ₹485 crore during the same time last year. That’s almost 25% down and even worse in real terms with lower taxation in the current period.

It was earlier mentioned in our Summer report, how lack of big releases led box office to suffer and that doesn’t look to improve anytime soon, at least not till release of Saaho, which if clicks, is set to do historic business.

The biggest hit of the year remains F2 while the biggest grosser is Mahesh Babu starrer Maharishi, who delivered a Hit after 4 years. There were in total 9 films that can be termed as successes, accruing to 13 per cent success rate, which is not great but not as terrible as the previous two year’s 11 per cent.

Majili Worldwide Closing Collections

Majili has ended up it’s run Worldwide with a distributor share of 34.60 Cr. The film is a second solo super hit for the hero after 100 percent love which released a way back in 2011. This is the solo highest collected film for the hero Naga Chaitanya beating Ra Randoi Veduka Chudham. After a good first week the film ran on expected lines in Uttarandhra where it can be termed as a Blockbuster but it isn’t same with other areas. The film has collected 800 thousand dollars in USA which is second highest for the hero after Premam ($820k).

Majili is a Hit as the film has held well on weekdays with rock steady collections. The film has collected a distributor share of 25.50 Cores worldwide in it’s first week. This is the biggest opening week ever for Naga Chaitanya beating Rarandoi Veduka Chudham which had collected 17.30 Cr share. The hold varies from areas to area with the best being UA followed by Nizam. The film is setup in Vizag and also performing like a Blockbuster here as it has high chances to collect 5 Cr share (Total UA area) in full run. It is also performing very well in Nizam and has high chances of collecting 13 Cr share in full run. The film is doing decent business in Overseas with a gross of 700 thousand dollars in USA. It will do more than 800 thousand dollars in full run.

Akkineni Naga Chaitanya’s Friday release Majili is holding well at the US box office in the first weekend after taking a decent start on Thursday premiers. The emotional drama directed by Siva Nirvana is all set to surpass the half million dollar mark by the end of Saturday.

Majili opened with $ 163K from Thursday premiers and collected a decent $ 148K on Friday to go past the $ 300K mark. On Saturday, the film is likely to collect more than $ 200K to take the total part half million dollars. Positive word of mouth and encouraging reviews are helping the film bigtime. Hero Akkineni Naga Chaitanya said he did not suggest Samantha’s name for ‘Majili’ and it was completely director Shiva Nirvana’s call. But added both his and her’s characters are quite intense ones in the movie.

In fact Sam being part of ‘Majili’ has helped him a lot said Naga Chaitanya and also stated that she definitely dominates him in terms of performance. About director Shiva, Chay said he developed a good rapport with him as they worked on the script for seven months before the shoot commenced.

“To play such an emotional character, I surrendered myself to the director as I immensely loved the script and no major changes were made. It just took me to the process. I can’t judge my performance but it is the most honest film I’ve ever done,” replied Chay when asked about his character Poorna.

The Akkineni hero revealed his favourite scenes from the movie. “Post the first half, there is one particular scene with Posani garu and it’s a heated argument scene.
