Hyderabad/Karimnagar: A controversy surrounding an alleged firing incident in Karimnagar has intensified after BRS MLA Kaushik Reddy made serious allegations against senior police officials, prompting a sharp rebuttal from the police department.
Raising the issue repeatedly in the Assembly over the past two weeks, Kaushik Reddy accused officials of misuse of power and demanded answers from the government. He alleged that the Karimnagar Commissioner of Police’s family members and close associates had conducted firing using sophisticated weapons, including AK-47 rifles and pistols.
According to the MLA, the incident took place in September 2025 at Bonalapalli, where multiple rounds were allegedly fired. He claimed that nearly 160 bullets were discharged and that an elderly woman, identified as Amruthamma, sustained a bullet injury, initially mistaking it for a stone hit. He questioned how private individuals were allowed access to firearms and firing ranges, calling it a serious lapse in law enforcement.
The MLA also targeted the state leadership, asking Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who holds the Home portfolio, to clarify the incident. He warned that such actions by a few officers were damaging the reputation of the entire police force. In a strong statement, Kaushik Reddy said he was willing to resign from his MLA post if his allegations were proven false.
Responding to the claims, sources in police department dismissed the allegations as “completely baseless.” Officials clarified that the incident occurred on September 21, 2025, during an officially sanctioned constable firing practice session.
Police stated that all necessary permissions were obtained in advance and that nearby villagers had been alerted before the exercise. During the session, a woman named Amruthamma sustained an injury linked to the firing practice.
Following the incident, teams including Greyhounds and local police inspected the site. Authorities decided to construct a retaining wall to prevent such occurrences and subsequently banned firing practice at that location.
The police further clarified that the Karimnagar CP was on leave for three days at the time of the incident and that no private individuals were involved in the firing exercise, contrary to the MLA’s claims.
