Story:
A village has a curse from hundreds of years because of a demon that lives in a mansion. Whenever there is a tail drop, a human life has to be given to the demon in the village. The entire village is scared about the incident. Veera Babu (Sangeeth Sobhan) lands in the village from the USA when the recent incident takes place. He gets cheated by a girl and a frustrated Veera Babu lands near the old mansion. The rest of the story is all about what happens next.
Analysis:
Rakasa has a plot that reminds of old stories with demons and other ghosts hundreds of centuries ago. Rakasa is not a new script as it reminds of several films. But Sangeeth’s performance as Veera Babu, Vennela Kishore’s fun in the second half and the climax of the film makes it a decent one time watch. Though the film offers nothing new, the entertainment makes it passable attempt. Though the setup in the mansion is scary, it is the entertainment that drives the episodes. Though their lives are at risk, the lead actor and his friends are focused on entertaining the audience.
The film’s director Manasa Sharma unfolds the plot and prepares the audience from the initial episodes. Veera Babu’s introduction, his love track and other episodes are thoroughly entertaining. Though Veera Babu is involved in a murder case, the thread is used in the second half. The entire first half happens in the village and the second half happens in the mansion. Getup Sreenu and Vennela Kishore entertained the audience.
The horror elements are a big misfire in Rakasa. They fail to impress the audience though the story narrates about a demon in the mansion. The graphics work too fails to impress the audience. Though there are a lot of incidents happening in the mansion, the entire village stays calm. Though there is a second path to enter, no one attempts it. The climax looks simple without any thrills.
Performances:
Sangeeth Sobhan does complete justice for the role of Veera Babu. His comic timing is the major highlight of the film. Vennela Kishore is the other highlight of the film and his episodes are hilarious in the second half. Getup Sreenu is ok in his role. There is no scope for the heroine to perform. The love story is boring and makes no impact.
Rakasa is a small film and one cannot expect technical brilliance from this film. Niharika and her team have made a decent film in the available resources and budgets. The VFX work should have been better. The last song in the film is decent. The audience will feel ok while watching the film but there is nothing much to remember after stepping out from the auditorium. All those who love horror comedies can give it a watch.
