MPs can’t be stopped from speaking: Owaisi on Delhi riots

0

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday attacked the central government for opposing discussion on the Delhi riots in the Lok Sabha as it would disrupt peace, and said that the parliamentarians cannot be prevented from speaking.

The AIMIM chief’s remarks came after he attended a meeting called by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in Parliament earlier in the day.

The Speaker wanted to have a dialogue with the members of all the parties for smooth functioning of the House as on the very first day of the second leg of the Budget session there were stormy scenes in both the Houses.

Owaisi in a series of tweets, said: “I just participated in an all party meeting called by Lok Sabha Speaker. Parliament had discussed Gujarat 2002 riots and a Parliamentary delegation was sent following riots. The government is now opposing a discussion in Lok Sabha about Delhi Carnage arguing that it’ll disrupt peace.”

“Let the debate happen in compliance with rules and procedure of the House and if someone violates them, it must be expunged from the record. But parliamentarians cannot be prevented from speaking at all. I volunteered to be part of any delegation that meets affected people,” Owaisi added.

He also demanded that a Deputy Speaker for the Lok Sabha should be appointed at the earliest and said, “I also demanded that appointing a Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha cannot be delayed further as it burdens the office of the Speaker too much. The Deputy Speaker must be appointed at the earliest.”

The Lok Sabha was adjourned for a few hours sometime after it met for the day on Tuesday after the opposition members created ruckus over the issue.

On Monday, the Lok Sabha was adjourned several times after the opposition members demanded debate over the Delhi violence last week in which at least 46 people have lost their lives and over 263 injured.

Rumours by some parties fuelled Delhi riots: Kishan Reddy

0

Union Minister of State for Home G. Kishan Reddy on Sunday said rumours unleashed by a section of political parties, a section of media and a section of social media added fuel to the fire in Delhi riots.

He also said that the Modi government is determined to go to bottom of the truth to unveil the conspiracy, if any, that triggered the riots.

The minister was speaking at the Indian School of Business (ISB) on ‘Policy conclave, ideas for India’.

He noted that the national capital witnessed some disturbances last week.

Reddy said unfortunately many innocents lost their lives and all sections of people lost their properties too. He said a brave constable and an Intelligence Bureau official also became victims.

He claimed that notwithstanding the constraints, the Modi government controlled the situation.

He reiterated that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was not aimed at taking away citizenship of any Indian but was enacted to give citizenship to minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who suffered persecution on religious grounds.

Stating that the country was divided on religious lines against the will of the people, he said it was assured during the division that the rights of the minorities in the respective nations will be protected.

“One of the greatest strengths of India that we have inherited from times immemorial is the tradition of samvad, which is dialogue”.

Reddy said all issues could be resolved through dialogue, but he was unable to understand why a section of people stay away from dialogue and indulge in rumour mongering.

The minister told the media persons that he advised students to debate the government policies in last five years and come out with their ideas for maintaining law and order, poverty alleviation, health for all and also for achieving the Modi government’s goal of five trillion dollar economy.

PM Modi holds ‘extensive review’, appeals for calm

0

In his first reaction on the Delhi violence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for peace on Wednesday even as he held an “extensive review” on the prevailing situation that has become a cause of concern for law enforcement agencies.

Taking to Twitter, the Prime Minister said: “Had an extensive review on the situation prevailing in various parts of Delhi. Police and other agencies are working on the ground to ensure peace and normalcy.”

Appealing for calm to restore normalcy, Modi said peace and harmony are “central to our ethos”.

“I appeal to my sisters and brothers of Delhi to maintain peace and brotherhood at all times. It is important that there is calm and normalcy is restored at the earliest,” he said.

Modi’s appeal came minutes after Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi held a rare press conference in New Delhi, flanked by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and senior leader P. Chidambaram where the party demanded Home Minister Amit Shah’s resignation for allegedly being unable to contain the violence.

So far, 20 people have been killed in the Delhi violence which appears to be one of the worst in recent times. A constable too succumbed to injuries that sparked massive outrage.

On Monday, a Delhi Police head constable was killed as pro- and anti-CAA groups battled each other even as Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony.

On Wednesday morning, the body of an Intelligence Bureau employee was recovered from the affected area which was found dumped in a drain, sparking further outrage.

The cause of the violence is believed to be a clash between pro- and anti-CAA protesters after those in support of the legislation blocked a road of northeast Delhi’s Jaffrabad area, in a similar fashion to that of Shaheen Bagh, over the weekend.

Several areas including Jaffrabad, Maujpur, and Gokulpuri remained tense on Wednesday. Police and paramilitary forces have also been deployed in parts of northeast Delhi that have been affected.
