Case filed on Oscar nominated Indian movie

Bollywood movie ‘Newton’ that was India’s official entry for the 90th Academy Awards, popularly known as Oscars. But the movie could not pass through the initial round of filtering. Now, defamation case has been filed against the makers of the movie with Delhi court now.

Newton movie is about government clerk Newton Kumar who is sent on election duty Chattisgarh region that was controlled by Naxals. His aim is to conduct elections in that area successfully. But he faces obstacles from communist rebels and Naxals.

CRPF sub-Inspector Tamal Sanyal filed the criminal complaint and civil defamation case on the makers of the movie. He demanded makers to tender unconditional apology and compensate CRPF. He also requeste for deletion of scenes that portray CRPF in bad light in the film. National Coordination Committee, an umbrella organisation of 70 organisations of retired Paramilitary personnel and officers, also filed similar application and even written to the Home Minister of India.

India’s ‘Newton’ among 92 entries for foreign language film Oscar

Indian film “Newton” is among a list of a record 92 countries which have submitted films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category for the 90th Academy Awards, the organisers have announced.

Haiti, Honduras, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mozambique, Senegal and Syria are first-time entrants, a statement on the official website of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences said.

“Newton”, a Hindi film set against the backdrop of elections in the world’s largest democracy, was last month chosen as India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars 2018.

Directed by Amit V. Masurkar and starring Rajkummar Rao, was chosen from among 26 titles from different languages by a 14-member jury appointed by the Film Federation of India (FFI).

It will now compete with high-profile contenders like Angelina Jolie’s “First They Killed My Father” from Cambodia, Michael Haneke’s “Happy End” from Austria, Sebastian Lelio’s “A Fantastic Woman” from Chile, Robin Campillo’s “BPM (Beats Per Minute)” from France, Samuel Maoz’s “Foxtrot” from Israel, Joachim Trier’s “Thelma” from Norway, and Andrey Zvyagintsev’s “Loveless” from Russia.

Nominations for the 90th Academy Awards will be announced on January 23, 2018.

The awards ceremony will be held on March 4, 2018, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

‘Newton’ is India’s choice for to Oscars 2018

FFI’s selection committee headed by producer C V Reddy selected “Newton” as India’s official entry at Oscars 2018. Starring Rajkummar Rao and directed Amit Masurkar’s Newton hit the screens today on 22ndSeptember. Of the 26 entries this year, this flick was unanimously chosen.

Newton is a political satire of an honest election officer’s attempt to conduct a free and fair elections in a conflict-hit area of Chhatisgarh.

Rajkummar told PTI, “It is a really honest film and we are already getting an overwhelming response. We will put all our energies to take the film forward”. The director termed it as a day of “double celebration”
