Vivekam Review: Great stunt sequences, but film fails to impress!

Vivegam Review, Ajith Vivekam Movie Review

Telugu360 Rating : 2.5/5

Tamil star Ajith’s Vivegam is dubbed into Telugu as Vivekam released in 400 screens across the Telugu states. Directed by Siva, the film stars Kajal Aggarwal as the female lead and Vivek Oberoi as the prime antagonist.

The scintillating trailers set high expectations on the film. However, the lack of promotions in Telugu are proving costly as there is a low buzz in both the Telugu states. Let’s see if the film can live up to the expectations and emerge as a winner at the box office or not.

Story :
Vivekam is the story about challenges faced by Ajay Kumar alias AK (Ajith) who works as an agent in India’s Counter Terrorism Squad. He is a kind of person who never accepts defeat under any circumstances. His task is to capture and kill terrorists who are escaping from radar of the police and intelligence departments around the world. He has learnt the life and death lessons. No one can compete with him in his intellectual smartness.

The Counter Terrorism Squad led by Aryan (Vivek Oberoi) is now looking for a person with similar attitude. The story revolves around why is the department searching for another person and the past behind it?

Analysis:
This is a spy thriller story with an elevated gambit. But there is a problem in creating connect with the audience. The protagonist and villain use a lot of technical jargon in their communication. This may not match with the intelligence level of the general audience.

Vivekam movie is made on par with the international standards of film making. The director and the actor wanted to show a James Bond from South India on the screen and were successful to an extent. There is no point in trying to find logics in an action entertainer.

Technically first half is a high-standard film. But flipside, audience may feel overdose of action. Also, overall impact or wow factor is missing due to lack of proper subject to put things together.

The characterization of villain which was supposed to be a big twist, did not come out well. Director failed to make high points in the twists and turns. It had all elements of a South Indian Action entertainer even though Director Shiva who thought of making the film at the international level.

Akshara Hassan chase scene, Hero – Villains Mind games and Ajith introduction sequences are shown excellently. In terms of making and technical values, the movie is exceptional. After fighting at international standards throughout the movie the climax is typical south Indian mass style and funny Performances The movie is entirely one man show and runs entirely on Ajith’s shoulders. Kajal as lead doesn’t play the role of typical heroine who is used for songs and romance. The director ensured to use her role effectively with the story. Vivek Oberoi was shown in a different style but the director should have used an actor who doesn’t have controversies. Akshara Hassan’s role is small but crucial to the story.

Technicalities:
The film is totally a parade of the technical team. The making is stylish. The film is shot entirely abroad, Stunt masters have done good job. However, Graphics add to the confusion. Every frame is exceptionally grand and overall action sequence is way above Indian films standard.

Verdict :
Vivekam has great production values, some mind-blowing stunt sequences which are by far superior for Indian film making standards. Lot of hard work by the team is visible on screen. However, poor storyline and back to back action sequences throughout the film might not appeal to common audience, Overall impact is missing. This film’s strengths are Ajith, dialogues and stunts! But weaknesses do overshadow the strengths!

I’m very choosy about the work I do: Vivek Oberoi

0

Vivek Oberoi, who has been acting for over 15 years and has been a part of memorable films such as “Company”, “Saathiya” and “Rakht Charitra”, says he is choosy about the work he does as he likes to distribute his time between family and his philanthropical activities.

Last seen on screen in heist comedy “Bank Chor”, he is gearing up for the release of his Tamil debut film “Vivegam”.

“I’m still choosy about my work. I like to do one film a year and sometimes even two, but not more. I’m enjoying watching my children grow. I like to spend more time with them. I also have my businesses and charitable organizations that keep me busy,” Vivek told IANS in an interview.

He picks his films after considerable thought.

Asked what drew him towards “Vivegam”, he said it is director Siva’s passion.

“It’s not the first south film I have been offered. I have turned down projects from all the south industries in the past. But when Siva approached me with ‘Vivegam’, it took just fifteen minutes to get convinced. I was moved by the passion with which he narrated and I wanted to work with him,” recalls Vivek, adding that he was initially hesitant about foraying into Tamil industry.

“It’s a new language, which means double the effort. The shoot required me to stay away from my kids for a long time in really cold countries. I wasn’t quite sure initially, but Siva’s conviction and faith in his script bowled me over,” he said.

The film is named after Vivek, and that made being part of project even more special.

On teaming up with Ajith, one of the stars of Tamil filmdom, Vivek said he found a brother in him.

“I was touched by his humility. On the first day of the shoot, he walked up to me and thanked me for being part of the project. He referred me as sir and I didn’t know how to react. But I could sense he was really humble and not faking it,” Vivek said.

Elaborating with an example, he said: “I still remember that one time when he made tea and served to everybody on the sets, including my staff. A star of his stature need not to do that but he did and that surprised all of us.”

Vivek was also inspired by Ajith’s commitment.

“He worked really hard on his physique for this project. He told me he was ashamed of his body in ‘Vedalam’, and wanted to get in shape. He was so committed. In Serbia, he was the first to be in the gym every morning and he worked out rigorously,” he said.

Ajith sports six-pack abs in the film, due for release on Thursday. His look was revealed in the film’s first poster and it sent his fans into frenzy.

Vivek isn’t nervous about the film’s release. He already feels accepted by the audiences.

“The kind of love and warmth Ajith anna’s fans have shown me on social media makes me already feel accepted. It’s one of the best roles I have played in my career. I play a spy and I thoroughly enjoyed being part of this project,” he said.

This is a year of many firsts for Vivek. Apart from “Vivegam”, he made his debut in the digital space via the web series “Inside Edge”, currently streaming on Amazon.

Talking about the experience of venturing into a new space, he said: “Let’s not judge a platform by its size. It’s the experience that matters to me and if I find that on stage in a 100-seater theatre, that’s where I want to be.

“When I accepted ‘Inside Edge’, people thought I’m out of work. If you start thinking about others, you can’t live your life. Only around 2.25 crore people watch movies in cinemas but over 40 crore people in India have smartphones. What’s wrong if I cater to the 40 crore people through a new platform?”

Vivegam is on par with Baahubali in technical aspects: Antony L Ruben

Antony L Ruben said upcoming spy thriller Vivegam will be on par with SS Rajamouli’s mega-blockbuster Baahubali in terms of visuals. The movie, directed by Siva, stars Ajith, Vivek Oberoi, Kajal Aggarwal and Akshara Haasan. It will release on August 24.

Film editor Antony L Ruben said upcoming spy thriller Vivegam will be on par with SS Rajamouli’s mega-blockbuster Baahubali in terms of visuals. The movie, directed by Siva, stars Ajith, Vivek Oberoi, Kajal Aggarwal and Akshara Haasan.

Antony LRuben said the technicians, who worked on the film, have delivered world-class results. “I can proudly say that Vivegam will be on par with Baahubali regarding the technical aspects and grandeur. Another reason to feel proud is that we didn’t outsource CGIand VFX technicians from other states or country. All our technicians are from Chennai, and they have delivered world-class output,” Ruben said.
The film editor said it was satisfying to work on Vivegam, which was his most challenging film till date. Ruben, 30, said Vivegam was quite exhaustive because of the multiple layers in the screenplay written by Siva. “I feel relaxed now because it is very satisfying after accomplishing such an enormous task. Vivegam is the most challenging film I have ever done. I have worked for almost thirty films till date, but the effort and time I had put in for this movie is equal to none.

Vivegam marks Antony L Ruben’s second consecutive association with Siva and Ajith after their successful previous outing Vedalam.” Ruben said Vivegam will be a treat for Ajith’s fans and the movie will be more enjoyable than Vedalam. “For the family audiences, there is a poetic love track. The husband and wife characters essayed by Ajith sir and Kajal will strike a chord with the public. And there are stunts with no violence. Technically it is a wholesome entertainer with aninternational standard,” said Ruben.

Vivegam will release on August 24. He is also simultaneously working on director Atlee’s Mersal, which will see actor Vijay play three characters. Samantha, Kajal Aggarwal and Nithya Menen play the female leads in the movie. “It’s a classy film with an excellent social message. To work with AR Rahman sir is a great moment and I am pleased about it. Vijay sir is a person who never takes success to his head and is full of enthusiasm. One of the three characters played by Vijay sir is going to be the kids’ favorite.”
