The war between medium of instruction and aspirations

Two critical statements had an impact on the students this week in the telugu regions. Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Wednesday asserted that leaders should not give false hope to students about government jobs as there are very few in the state. On the other hand, the Andhra Pradesh Municipal Administration Minister Dr. P. Narayana issued and later suspended GO No 14 changing the medium of instruction from English to Telugu. However, the minister said that it would be in force from the next academic year and all students need to write examinations next year in English only.

It is evident that Narayana has faint idea of the student difficulties when the medium of instruction is changed. Telangana had its state language changed from Persian to Urdu to English and finally Telugu. The AP minister definitely needs to hit the books especially the pages where students started agitating in Osmania University when the medium of instruction was changed. There’ll be a devil to pay if the GO 14 is implemented.

On the contrary, in the recently held TSPSC group2 examination almost five questions were based on Telangana Dialect. It wouldn’t be surprising if in the future substantial marks are allocated to the regional dialect.

Any typical coaching institute for state government jobs would acknowledge that the number of Telugu medium job aspirants is higher than the English medium aspirants. Consequently, students from telugu medium background tend to get the government jobs easily but face difficulties in securing IT jobs. In certain coaching centers in Hyderabad, APPSC and TSPSC aspirants have combined classes for most of the subjects except for state history and state economy.

Before the bifurcation of the state, TRS had time and again claimed that lakhs of government jobs would be given to the aspirants once the new state was formed. But the fact of the matter is Telangana has most of its infrastructure set up and it is difficult to create new jobs. Andhra Pradesh is setting up its capital and the chances of getting employed is high, however, due to the financial constraints the positions remain vacant. The AP minister justified the need for the GO14 as Telugu medium students are failing to excel in admission tests for professional courses. The students of AP are being given an imprudent chance to be prepared while the TS students have to face the heat directly now. The TS minister’s statement regarding false hopes comes as a warning to not put all the eggs in one basket.
Narayana was conveying similar thing as KCR that “We can’t give government jobs to everyone”. The approach was different but both of them drove to the same point that students have to think beyond language and state government jobs else they have to face the music.
