Another appreciable thing about Kerala relief camps

Unusually heavy bout of rains in Kerala devastated the life in Kerala for last 2 weeks were. Many people, including celebrities, came forward offering help to fellow brethren while Kerala battles the worst flooding in 96 years. Army forces did a fantastic job in the rescue operations. While all these are appreciated, one more thing about the Kerala relief camps is highly appreciated now. A Tamil Channel ran a story on Kerala relief camps and revealed that, most of these relief camps, if not all, consciously avoided using plastic in their camps.

Over one million residents were there in relief camps set up after Kerala was hit by a devastating flood. Even though some food items, water bottles and other items came to relief camps in plastic wrappers, bottles and covers, wherever possible, relief camps used steel plates, steel glasses and bowls. They cleaned the utensils and re-used them rather than using disposal plates or glasses. A special story was presented in a Tamil channel highlighting this and appreciating Kerala people’s environment-consciousness even during such disasters.

Moreover, they used the trucks bringing materials and food to them for recycling waste as they put the waste back in the same trucks those returning from the flood-hit areas. Anyway, consciously taking care of environment even during the disasters must be highly appreciated.
