Atal Bihari Vajpayee condition said to be ‘critical’

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, 10th Prime Minister of India, senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) political party, has been ailing for long, was admitted to AIIMS on Monday and his condition is said to be critical now. He has been bed-ridden since 2009, has been suffering from lower respiratory tract infection and kidney- related issues

Atal is the first non-Indian National Congress Prime Minister to serve a full five-year term. At age 93, Vajpayee is currently the oldest living former Indian Prime Minister. He had been suffering from kidney related issues recently and admitted to AIIMS. In a late night statement, AIIMS said the former PM has been “diagnosed with a urinary tract infection” for which appropriate treatment is being given. Sources in AIIMS described the condition of Atal ji as “critical”, with his sole kidney and lung performing at their lowest capacity. Vajpayee, who is diabetic and has only one functional kidney, suffered a stroke in 2009 which affected his cognitive abilities. Later, he developed dementia.
