Amaravati witnessed a historic moment as Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu unveiled the towering statue of Amarajeevi Potti Sriramulu. The 58-foot bronze statue stands as a powerful tribute to the man whose sacrifice made the formation of Andhra State possible. The ceremony marked the conclusion of the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of the legendary freedom fighter.
The statue has been named the “Statue of Sacrifice.” It reflects the 58 days of fasting that Potti Sriramulu undertook before laying down his life for a separate state for Telugu people. The monument now stands in Amaravati as a reminder of the courage and determination that shaped the political identity of Andhra Pradesh.
The unveiling ceremony was held at Shakhamuru Park in Amaravati. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, several ministers, and alliance leaders attended the event. The gathering paid homage to the man who transformed a regional demand into a historic movement through his extraordinary sacrifice.
A Monument Built in Record Time
The statue project was taken up with the support of Arya Vysya community organisations that created a special trust in Sriramulu’s name. The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority allotted about 6.8 acres of land for the monument.
Foundation work began on September 3, 2025, when Minister Nara Lokesh laid the foundation stone. The project was planned with an estimated cost of about ₹150 crore. The first phase of construction has now been completed.
The statue itself weighs nearly 100 tonnes. About 30 tonnes of bronze were used for the sculpture. The structure is supported by 70 tonnes of iron reinforcement inside the pedestal. Skilled artists from Bommaluru in Krishna district worked on the design and sculpting of the statue.
The sculpture was built in six separate sections and later assembled at the site. Engineers constructed deep pillars at a depth of around 18 feet to support the structure. The entire monument, including the base rises to about 110 feet.
Another attraction will be a nine-foot seated statue of Sriramulu on the second floor, where visitors can offer floral tributes. The second phase of development will include a museum, photo gallery, skill development centres and a large auditorium with a capacity of about 2,000 seats. The surrounding park area will also be developed as a public space.
A Tribute to a Historic Sacrifice
Potti Sriramulu’s fast and eventual martyrdom became a turning point in India’s linguistic reorganisation of states. His sacrifice led to the creation of Andhra State in 1953. It later paved the way for the formation of Andhra Pradesh.
By unveiling the Statue of Sacrifice in Amaravati, the state government has attempted to immortalise that moment in history. The monument now stands on the banks of the Krishna River as a symbol of courage, identity and collective memory.
