The political discourse in Telangana has taken a bizarre, historically twisted turn, revolving entirely around an obsession with Adolf Hitler and an enforcement agency HYDRAA.
The question hanging over the entire episode is simple: do you really think Hitler’s way works?
The debate kicked off when Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy attempted to explain the conceptual blueprint behind the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA). While addressing a conclave, Revanth Reddy claimed that the agency’s name and ruthless efficiency were inspired by German dictator Adolf Hitler. He asserted that “Hydra” was Hitler’s favorite word and that it represented an elite, core assassination squad capable of neutralizing anyone. Using this historical analogy, the Chief Minister proudly stated that he drew inspiration from that level of force to name and model his anti-encroachment task force.
The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) wasted no time in seizing upon these remarks. BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) launched a sharp counteroffensive, stating that the Chief Minister’s open admiration for Hitler exposed a fascist, authoritarian mindset. KTR alleged that HYDRAA has been functioning effectively as an “assassination agency” aimed at demolishing the homes and livelihoods of ordinary citizens under the guise of governance.
However, the irony of the opposition’s outrage runs deep. While BRS heavily criticized the current administration’s fascist analogies, political archives reveal that former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) had previously courted the exact same comparison. In the past, KCR publicly stated that he did not mind being called a Hitler.
The most striking element of this entire political narrative is that none of the political leaders involved-nor their opponents – realized the fundamental absurdity of the premise. The word “Hydra,” in the context of an elite, shadowy assassination squad linked to fascist world domination, does not belong to the history books of Nazi Germany. It belongs entirely to Marvel Comics.
Historically, Hitler’s inner circle and state apparatus relied on organizations like the SS and the Gestapo. The multi-headed, unstoppable strike force called “Hydra” is a fictional entity created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1965.
Evidently, an advisor drafted a briefing note blending cinematic pop culture with 20th-century history, and the state’s top leadership ran with it unchecked. The opposition, in its rush to counter, accepted the false historical premise at face value to score political points, completely missing the fictional origin of the term.
